News: Your units will speak the nations language. Put an end to popups!

Quoted from CivFanatics (which quoted from WorthPlaying).

quote:
Even better, when you click on a unit, it will respond in the language of your selected region, so it would be cool to know Mandarin if you choose to be Chairman Mao as the leader of your Chinese civilization. This feature really validates the concept of the game in the development of world history, as multiculturalism and the many languages of Earth are often overlooked in games targeted at North America. Who knows, maybe by the time Civ IV is released, it will also include a little tutorial to teach you what each unit is saying and how to say it.

I like this feature, quite cool. Will remind me of Warcraft/Starcraft, where when you click on a unit, the unit responds with the appropriate personality.

I LOVE this kind of immersive fluff!! Now all we need is for historical voice actors to read famous texts when you research something (like SMAC).

This may cause me to leave on the audio portion of Civ a bit longer than any of the previous titles. I don't think I can ever again listen to Ode to Joy after having Civ2 play it over, and over and over and over and over and over again. :vomit:

I see a good reason for modding in secession for this.

Sire, the cities of xxxxx, yyyyyy and zzzzzz have rebelled against our attempts to force our language on their population. To say a quote, "we don't want those foreign-speaking soldiers from a king who can only speak gibberish to us". Shall we sent a severe punishment force?

Are you sure they where specific to each civ, rather than each "culture group"? I seem to remember them being the same among many different nations.

They were most definitely not same for different civs, not in the original game. In the expansion, the Aztecs and Mayans had matching sounds, as well as Mongols and Huns, even though there were slight differences between Aztecs and Mayans. All of the original civs, though, had different sounds - with Goth and Teuton also only having minor differences.

I think using the animated advisors from civ2 and applying it to diplomacy sessions would be great.

imagine negotiating with an animated, whimpering chairman mao as he begs for peace before you roll tanks over his final city.

that could be worth the 50 bucks right there.

Well, I'm cautious on this. EE had units that did this, and it got extremely annoying after a short while. Clicking on German troops and getting the nasal "Mein Commandant!" every single time was grating, to say the least.

Of course, if the voices can be turned off without turning off other sounds, that would be fine.

Well if each unit has a different sound then it won't be the same right through the game, but if there are 100 units, and what is it 16? 18 civ's, (I'll say 18) then thats 100 x 18 nations = 1800. That's a lot of sounds; but I think there games (GTA:SA? it has 2-3gig worth) have just as many.

If you can bring yourself to tolerate Firaxis's civ for a while longer, I'd like to see what you can come up with for a unit sound pack

I'm really surprised of this "nations language": do they really mean they will translate in eighteen different Civ languages? (Ok maybe American English and Great English can sound roughly the same).

I'm betting a pizza Firaxis simply mean that they are translating voices for every translated version of the game, and someone on a fan site related too much from reality to an interesting wish...

Maybe I'm wrong, but let me underline I'm *not* ready to eat any manual nor game box at all
