Expansion Packs Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Okay, so I know the game hasn't come out yet, but expansion packs with Civ are inevitable.

So how many should there be? What new features and civs should be in them?

I'd like to see 8 new civs like last time. Perhaps this list:

Incas
Ottoman Turks
Assyrians
Mayans
Koreans
Carthaginians
and, oh I don't know...
Vikings
and Celts?

Those last two were always pushing it a little bit. They provided some diversity, but the Celts. for one. never had an organized nation/empire, and the Vikings, despite their culutral achievements and economic trade were bloodthirsty raiders. But having these two is better than having the Portuguese or the Dutch.

Korea is a must! I had a *HUGE* thread about this on Poly some years ago but can't seem to find it. First, I speak Korean and can't wait to hear the units speaking it. Second (more importantly, obviously) the Korean market is a big one (well, less so for TBS games)...rabid computer game players over there.

Suffering from ads?

I found a Korean Civ3 forum with over 14,000 members. I'd say that warrants being included (if you assume Firaxis are trying to please large markets by including their nation or race).

With the modding capability that is supposed to be available to us through the SDK, we may have all of these extra civs available to use before Firaxis is able to release an expansion pack.

Just think of it, Firaxis goes to release an expansion pack, and everyone who looks at it says, "but we already have those civs in the game!"

Tired of ads?

Korea is a must, and it will be implemented in the first expansion pack. I'm actually surprised that it doesn't belong to the vanilla game: I bet the Korean market for Civ is larger than the Japanese one.

Well, the Ottomans were modded way before Play the World came out, but Firaxis' work was superior to the modders' (original leaderheads instead of ones made by poser, complete diplomatic text, the added bonus of being the standard).

I don't think Civ4 will be any different to Civ3 in that regard.

Reindeer Rider, of course.

Who would the Viking leader be, though? Whatever historical persona they wind up choosing for the Vikings would be a bit of a stretch, I think.

As for the Vikings, they represent a side to civilization (real one...not the game) that isn't often portrayed. I'd like to see them included

It's not like who will play the game? I for one am SO going to buy it as soon as it comes out.

And to Dr. Zoidberg:

I assumed that the Scandinavian civ is supposed to represent the Norwegians, Swedes, and Danes throughout their entire history. Therefore, Gustavus Adolphus is a viable option. They could always pull a "two-leader" with a blood-thirsty Norseman and G.A.

I suggest you reread my post and pay extra attention to the quotations. I also will buy and play cIV as soon as it comes out. That was directed at yin26. You'll note the link to a thread of his.

Sabre2th: For me, having a Korean-speaking Civ would be a novelty. I might enjoy that, and certainly many Koreans / Korean speakers might as well. Do I think the game is worth buying if you have already played 1 2 and 3 to death? (Or given up on, for example, 3 because you felt it was horrible.) Not from what we've learned about the game so far...unless you are just like a junkie strung out on crack or something.

What confuses people is that I actually want the Civ franchise to be a huge success but feel that pandering to the lowest common denominator (perhaps not in all cases but in many) simply isn't the way in my opinion. I have to say, though, that --assuming they do it well, which we'll have to see-- this kind of touch bodes well for the game.

In any event, yours was a fair question, and I hope I've explained myself a bit.

EDIT: I'm talking about, of course, this announcement: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthre...threadid=136243

What would be a real bummer, though, is if the units simply have three phrases and that's it: "Yes?" "Right!" "Understood!" That would be a bit of a let down.

I don't expect it will be much more than that. But we may be surprised.

I'd be happy if my cities far from the capital weren't completely useless and if allies didn't start wars by accidentally striking my submarines.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Here's some ideas for expansion leaderheads:

Incas - Atahualpa or Pachacuti
Ottoman Turks - Suleyman the Magnificent (move over, Osman!)
Assyrians - Sennacherib or Tiglath-Pileser
Mayans - Smoke Jaguar or Pacal
Koreans - Wang Kon or Dan-gun or one of the Kims (unlikely)
Carthaginians - Hannibal
Vikings - Knut and Gustavus Adolphus (for two different personalities)
Celts - Vercingetorix (Cunobelin, Boudicca and Brennus may all be well and good, but Vercingetorix was the man!)

I think Dan-gun is an excellent choice for a Korean king because he founded the nation. According to legend, anyway; he wasn't a real person. Sejong the Great would be better than Wang Kon because he commissioned the Korean alphabet, invented a water clock, a sundial, and various other things.

I know that you want the franchise to succeed, but I'm pretty sure I've seen you say you will not [waste] money on the game, which makes me wonder why you would much care what or who was in it

Yeah, I suppose. But then it wouldn´t be Vikings would it? More like generic scandinavians... The only similarity between Canute and GA is that they both came from Scandinavia and that they murdered and pillaged in Europe. Actually I think GA (and his ilk) was worse than Canute in that sense. But that´s a topic for another thread

Sabre2th: Unless Markos sends me a copy of the game for review, I don't plan to buy the game unless the Poly reception is really good (need solid, detailed reviews). Of course, if Markos sends me a copy for review --and if I like the game's combat and find ICS isn't the dominant strategy-- then I'd have to eat at least part of the box. So now that I think about it, maybe I should just sneak in a few turns at a friend's house and go into hiding. But, as for the topic of this thread, these little touches do help the game, I think.

As for Korea, the leaders should be (in this order): King Sejong (great inventor -- or supporter of inventions, including the world's most well-crafted phonetic alphabet) and Dan-gun (mythical founder of Korea who started life as a bear) -- as Masuro said.

If you want another one to think about, there's Admiral Lee Sun Shin of the famous turtle boat fame...and you know the turtle boat unit would *have* to be in the game.
