pchang has the real answer. However, some women may not be clued in to that answer.

Expect to pay. Pay. She might pitch a very small fit for form, but if you feel like she actually cares about it, ask if she would like to cover the tip. If she continues at all to insist on 50/50 or her paying 100% after that, go with her wishes.

It's a stupid ritual, but it seems to work.

I've found that if they really want to go 50/50 they say so before the date. If you're on the date and they haven't said anything about going 50/50 you're obligated to pay.

Me and a friend take out two beautiful, BEAUTIFUL (if you think you understood you didn't!) extraordinarily beautiful girls. We go to a roof garden next to the sea in piraeus and order some drinks. First time out with them two btw. the one was a model the other an actress. both students. Conversation, blah blah, then they say

_we want another round of drinks. of course you'll pay
_and why would we?
_because you're dating two godesses and the whole bar is looking at us and are jealous of you

fortunately my friend thought quickly of an answer involving the harsh reality that he held the keys to the car and that taxis were particularly expensive

As a practical matter, most people I dated made similar coin to me so paying was not a big issue. They expected to pay their own way. I liked alternation since it allowed it to be a "treat". Instead of a mundane splitting of a check, tonight would be my treat to her while tomorrow she could treat me.

If I liked the girl, it never mattered if the amounts paid by each were equal or not

I usually expect to go 50/50 on the food/tip and then I pick up the incidentals (Taxi, tickets, etc.). So the ratio usually ends up at 60/40 for me. I've had more success picking up the niggling little costs of a date than the large ones.

If a girl doesn't even make a token attempt to split the bill, then she's usually a pain in the ass.

I always try to pay. If she totally insists, then I say we split it 50/50.

I think it helps if I pay when we go to a dump like Taco Bell. They can't always get romantic dinners on seaside cliffs.

Yeah, had a bit of an argument awhile ago on this topic. I don't mind paying, and I'll offer to pay, but if she's willing to pay for it, then I'm not going to be upset.
