160gig drive showing 130gig? Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

First a disclaimer: When I installed the 160Gig HD a couple of years ago it came up as a 130 drive, I thought "What the hell, I don't need all the space" and carried on with the install.

Guess what? Yep! Now I could do with the space, is there anyway to get it back without a format and re-install?

Bottom line: It's all my fault, Iknew it was coming, is there a way around it?

I'm running XP Pro and SP1 (I have SP2 but havn't installed in yet)

You can't access past 130GB unless your IDE controller is UltraATA/133, not 100/66/33.

Though there may be some hack/workaround somewhere to get around that limitation. Hell if I know, I'm a Serial ATA guy.

Isn't it one of these funny ones where when they quote 160GB as the capacity they are going by base of 1000 rather than 1024 which gives a completely erroneous result?

For the sake of 40Gig and a re-format I may as well get another drive?

Tired of ads?

Is it even 40 gig? More like 10 to 20, if it's 160 in 1000-base and shows up to you as 130 in 1024-base. I think it's around 140 in 1024-base in total.

Disclaimer: I do not have a PhD

Asher is almost right but I know at least with my 200GB hard drive, a PCI card came with it I guess to be the controller for it, and it recognizes all 200gb to this day.

I just about cried yesterday when I ran out of space on my "new" (5 month old) 250GB drive.

I need to go buy a 400/500GB drive soon.

That'll push me above the terabyte mark on my computer.

I checked the site it is an 133 (ASRock, and yes I know!), losing the 40Gb is better than reformatting but I'd just hoped there was an easy way.

I mean, the manufacturer may have a tool or something.

Verto: My PC is also a PVR/TiVo like thing, and I hoard things. I also download a ton of stuff.

I have a 6x dual-layer DVD burner, but the media costs too much for me to use it right now (dual-layer that is).

And my 240GB RAID is 90% full, my 250GB drive is >99% full (120MB free)...

I have a 40GB oldschool IDE drive too, which is at like 35GB.

Increase Your PM Length

If you use Windows XP, you have to enable over 137 GB support in the system registry. That might be your problem.

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc...g_48bit_lba.exe

Of course, you'll have to resize your partition, etc.

Good luck.

I had the exact same problem. Its basically a bug in Windows XP, before SP2. Fixing it is a major pain in the ass. Here's what they say on the Maxtor website:

https://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin...xzWVALh&p_lva=#

quote:
Problem
The full capacity of ATA drives larger than 137GB is not recognized by the operating system.

Solution
Currently, there are three options to remedy the 137 Gigabyte barrier. Failure to implement one of the following installation options will result in data loss when trying to access the hard disk beyond 137 Gigabytes.

Installation Option 1. Upgrade the operating system to either Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 (or newer) or Windows XP with Service Pack 1 (or newer) and download the Maxtor Big Drive Enabler software patch. The Maxtor Big Drive Enabler, once executed, will update the Windows registry for large drive support.

Installation Option 2. Download and install the Intel Application accelerator. The Intel Application Accelerator provides 48-Bit LBA compliant ATA/ATAPI controller drivers (IntelATA.mpd) and replaces the Windows 98/Me, 2000 and XP ATA controller drivers (ESDI_506.PDR). Intel is the only chipset manufacturer that we are aware of that offers a compatible controller driver for Windows .

The Intel Application Accelerator only supports the following chipsets: 810, 810E, 810E2, 810L, 815, 815EP, 815G, 815EG, 815P, 820, 820E, 840, 845, 845E, 845G, 845GE, 845GL, 845GV, 845PE, 850, 850E, 860. The Intel Application Accelerator can be obtained at http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/iaa/. If you have an unsupported chipset or do not want to upgrade the operating system then try the next solution.

Installation Option 3: Attach the large hard drive to an add-in Ultra ATA PCI adapter card with a 48-Bit LBA compliant BIOS and controller driver. The adapter card bypasses the system BIOS and operating system’s controller driver and uses its own BIOS and controller driver.

Using an IDE ATA/ATAPI controller that has a 48-Bit LBA compatible controller driver will allow safe use of large drives beyond the previous limits of 137 GB capacity. Additional controllers that do not have 48-Bit compliant drivers cannot safely access drives larger than 137 GB. A compatible card such as the Maxtor Ultra ATA/133 PCI for Windows and Sonnet Tempo ATA/133 PCI Card for MACs can be purchased at http://www.maxstore.com (U.S. only) or at a local retailer.

**For detailed step-by-step instructions please click here.

I tried the registry thingie, but it didn't work. It seems that the problem is this: when I installed Windows, using a plain vanilla Windows XP CD-ROM (that is, without SP2), Windows didn't recognize the full capacity of my hard drive and didn't format all of it, it formated about 137 GB of my hard drive. So if you do the registry thingie, you still have to reformat your hard drive. But if you reformat your hard drive you erase your registry, so it doesn't solve anything...

You will have to reformat and reinstall Windows. But if you don't have Windows XP SP2 on your cd-rom, it will not solve the problem. I solved the problem when I bought a copy of Windows XP with SP2 on it. Then I reformated and installed Windows.

reds, get your hands on a copy of Partition Magic. This might do the trick. PM (probably) sees the part of the hd that the system doesn´t. If you install the Big Drive Enabler (or something similar) from your hd manufacturer and use PM to format the unused space it should work.
