President Bush opens options for use of force on Iran! Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

quote:
Bush: All Options Open for Iran Nukes

By RAMIT PLUSHNICK-MASTI, Associated Press Writer 53 minutes ago

In a stern warning to Iran, President Bush said "all options are on the table" if the Iranians refuse to comply with international demands to halt their nuclear program, pointedly noting he has already used force to protect U.S. security.

Bush's statement during an interview on Israeli TV late Friday was unusually harsh. He previously said diplomacy should be used to persuade Iran to suspend its nuclear program and if that failed then the U.N. Security Council should impose sanctions.

The U.S. government and others fear Iran's nuclear work is secretly designed to produce nuclear weapons. Iran's leaders deny that, saying it is only for the generation of electricity.

In the interview, Bush said the United States and Israel "are united in our objective to make sure that Iran does not have a weapon."

But, he said, if diplomacy fails "all options are on the table."

"The use of force is the last option for any president. You know, we've used force in the recent past to secure our country," he said.

Iran's government resumed uranium conversion at its nuclear facility in Isfahan this past week. The U.N. nuclear watchdog agency, the International Atomic Energy Agency, responded by issuing a warning to Iran on Thursday that expressed "serious concern" about Iran's intentions.

Bush welcomed the warning, which signaled that the West wanted to give diplomacy time to ease the standoff.

In Vienna, Austria, where the IAEA is based, diplomats said Iran faced a Sept. 3 deadline to stop uranium conversion or face possible referral to the Security Council, which has the power to impose crippling sanctions. The diplomats spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the IAEA board's proceedings.

Iran, which insists its nuclear program is peaceful, responded with indignation to the IAEA warning.

Finally, I don't know anyone here would disagree with me that Iran MUST NOT have nuclear weapons. I thought Bush had lost some of his ability to act, but apparently I was wrong, luckly. Last thing we or the world needs is a nuclear bomb going off in the United States. The shitstorm that that would create is almost beyond comprehension. In the least Herr Bush would have emergency powers... do I even need to go down what that path would lead to? -- A very pissed off and dangerous version of the Roman Empire.

I've been saying for day 1 of the Iraq war that we NEED to focus on Iran, they've hated us, for much longer and much harsher then Iraq ever did.

I would fully support a war or whatever option that will resolve the crisis with Iran getting nuclear weapons. Support our troops, you bet you're sorry ass I would if they were defending us from Iran. I would not support anti-war demonstrators in the case of Iran.

Hopefully a less life costly thing will happen with Iran, but their Nuclear Program MUST be CEASED!

So basically because we think Iran is so dangerous, we must use any options, even nuking them ourselves to prevent them from getting nukes? Now, what about people who think the US is so dangerous and we have thousands of nukes? Can they use all options as well?

Does anyone really think Iran would use nukes if they got them?

You think the US is dangerous, wait until we have a nuke dropped on us!! Trust me no one wants that!

And I firmly believe Iran would use its nuclear capacity against either the US or Israel or both. After all in the least they'd go to some warrior heaven that is supposedly linked to by the Koran if they sacrificed their entire country.

Pakistan has nukes and they hate India more than Iran hates the US or Isreal. How come they haven't dropped any? It's silly to think that Iran hates us so much that they would nuke us. If they hated us that much, why haven't they declared war on us and tried to kill our soldiers in the Middle East?

They (Iran) have declared Jihad on us, and where do you think most of the insurgents blowing up our troops are coming from?

Do you actually think that insurgents in Iraq are Iranian? Really?

Hey Wiggy, from your article:

quote:
But just as troubling is that the spread of the new weapons seems to suggest a new and unusual area of cooperation between Iranian Shiites and Iraqi Sunnis to drive American forces out -- a possibility that the commanders said they could make little sense of given the increasing violence between the sects in Iraq.

So basically... it's some bullshit they made up... oh, and from the article:

quote:
American officials say they have no evidence that the Iranian government is involved

And:

quote:
But some Middle East specialists discount any involvement by the Iranian government or Hezbollah, saying it would be counter to their interests to support Iraq's Sunni Arab insurgents, who have stepped up their attacks against Iraqi Shiites. These specialists suggest that the arms shipments are more likely the work of criminals, arms traffickers or splinter insurgent groups.

"Iran's proteges are in control in Iraq right now, yet these weapons are going to people fighting Iran's proteges," said Kenneth Katzman, a Persian Gulf expert at the Congressional Research Service and a former Middle East analyst at the CIA. "That makes little sense to me."

I wonder if wearing a T-shirt that says " I love Islam" in the heart of Texas would have any negative effect.

I should think it's too early to go surgical on them... I mean, they can't make a nuke in a week. If they start now, Bush will be out of office by the time they have a working prototype. You people have satellites and stuff, you can detect them in time to stop a nuke, if they really go for it. If they make electricity... Good for them.

Yeah, just like all options were on the table with regards to NK. Wait, I remember Bush saying we would NEVER allow NK to have nukes. Then the North Koreans got seevral pounds of Plutonium out of secure and monitored storage and now who knows were it is.

Of course this was the same admin. that gave us the unqualified success in Iraq....... And has finally crushed the Taliban and made Afghanistan safe after 4 years....

The US will go at it utterly alone if it decides to attack Iran, since it has 0 justification whatsoever for any military straike against Iran's nuclear facilities unless authorized by the Sec. Council and that won't happen.

Besides, airstrikes would fail, in the sense of NOT stopping Iran, who would continue on its merry way, with the added ability to blame everything on the uS. I mean, iof the US likes the current president of Iran so much, we could make him stronger internally in ways less expensive than dropping bombs, but hey, if that is what rock's Bush's boat.

I seem to remember your ilk proclaiming that the Iraqis would welcome us with open arms as liberators and that resistance would be minimal and short.

You know very little about the Iranians and what they're attitudes would be towards a U.S. invasion. Considering the horrible anti-American sentiment our past meddling conjured up there, any attempt at aggression will be met by very fierce resistance. And Iran is considerably larger than Iraq.

Invading Iran is not an option, not after the problems we have had in Iraq, and that is in a country were the great majority of the population is putting up no real resistance. Imagine invading a country 3 times as big (size and population) in which a resistance would have a much higher pool of support than the 25-30% it has in iraq (at least 50% in Iran).

When Bush speaks of force, he probably means air attacks. Unfortunately most Iranians support the countries nuclear ambitions and attacking Iran would simply discredit anti-government forces in Iran. But given the glaring and obvious lack of understading by the guys making our FP, can't say I am surprised.

No Imran, the arms were intercepted at the border. I cannot believe how you are whitewashing the Iranian participation in the Iraq insurgency

Furthermore I have reason to believe the mullahs in Iran are not too popular down there; and if we play our cards right, becuase Iran has a crap military, there will not be need for such a massive deployment of troops.

Yep, I think so.

IMHO an invasion won´t be an option for Bush.
It probably wouldn´t get the public support needed (which AFAIK has dropped steadily after the steady stream of filled bodybags returning from Iraq and other things like the missing WMDs in Iraq)
and it would be very questionable if the congress releases the Budget for an Invasion of Iran, after the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq by far exceeded any Budget-Projections Bush made

So there would be airstrikes as the only option.

Which according to your article officials "suspect as coming from Iran", if they were obviously from Iran, why the 'suspect', why not come out and say it? Furthermore, as other quotes show, any arms coming across probably aren't from Iran, but from other groups.

Why would Iran back Sunnis against Shi'ites? When Iran is a Shi'ite country? Every person in the article is totally confused by that, which means, it ain't from Iran.

Only the most braindead believe that Iran is helping the Sunni rebellion.

If Iraq became a state it could oppose Iran. Shi'ites in Iran want the turmoil.

These bombs were probably aimed at US troops and those helping the new government.

You can say that is "brain-dead" all you want, but I'd say you are trying to hold the untenable position that weapons and high-grade explosives seized from the Iran-Iraq border are somehow not from Iran.

Uh, guys, before I go to bed. The Shia have their own militias, that have been stepping up activity after the various massacres of fighting age Shia males in mixed areas by Sunni insurgents. Maybe, just maybe, Iran is helping arm them in the hope that once the US pulls out that a Civil War will create another Shia theocracy. Anotherwise, the Iranians are helping creating their own Ulster paras(militaries), to borrow from another conflict, which will be able to match the Sunnis atrocity for atrocity. Yippee, you too can have four centuries of religious conflict and atrocities.
