Apolyton Weekly Survey III: New Feautures Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

This thread is our thrid Apolyton Survey, where the word "weekly" is to be taken in the broadest sense .

By now, we probably know, at least in general terms, about most Civ4 feautures, so:

Which new or improved feautures in Civ4 are you most looking forward to?

Feel free to speculate about the details of how the new feautures work, what effect they will have on gameplay and whether the new feautures will help make Civ4 as good as we all want it to be.

If the modability delivers on its promise, then Civ4 will have an extremely long and interesting life. The fact that the community can program AI behaviour and script events allows for fantastic community packs.

I look forward to it more than any other aspect

even tho i think it'll have the least impact on the game, I'm most looking forward to Religion.

I like to roleplay my games, and I cant think of anything adding more to that dimension than going on holy crusades and whatnot.

I really hope moddability doesnt turn out to be civ4s best feature.

I voted for reduced MM (compared to civ3), otherwise i might not play it at all.

I have to say that I really agree with Maquiladora on this one. If moddability turns out to be civ4's best feature, it means that the vanilla game would really suck and it needs other people to make it good.

While moddability can give games a longer life, I prefer to play the unmodded version as long as possible and only when I get bored of it I try some variations.

I look most forward to reducing micro management.
The less tedious tasks to do, the more attention can be devoted to more pleasing parts of the game.

I disagree. Moddability can and will be the best feature even if the vanilla is amazing, because with the amount they are talking about, the game can be extended to a very extreme degree, not to mention converted into practically a different game. I have some very exciting ideas for the SDK, if it is as broad as I hope it is.

What if you consider MM a pleaseing part of the game? I enjoy trying to squeeze the most from a limited amount of land. MM is the best way to do this.

I agree completely there. The scope of moddability that we are being promised offers the potential for modders to do amazing things with the game engine, which will extend the game's active lifespan by quite a bit. Just look at EU2 for example; the vanilla game was certainly good, but undoubtedly the numerous mods for the game have extended its lifespan a bit... the EU2 forums at Paradox are still quite active even though the game has been out for almost 4 years now.

Aside from the modding, I believe the relgion idea also has some good potential, too.

Good on you, but every game again gets tedious to me. Besides, playing against the AI shouldn't require too much MM in my opinion. Against other players OTOH...

Victoria is a hard game, thats for sure. Hearts of Iron is much easier. Conquering the U.S.A as Canada is childsplay in that game.

All of them combined, if delivered as promised and low on bugs, will make a great game. And that is what I am looking forward to. So no vote for a single option from me. Single features do not make a game great. The sum of all features does.

I voted 'other' as I'm most looking forward to the new possibilities for builders that the new engine offers. In that sense, I'm all for eye candy

My second choice would have been moddability. I had enormous fun in Civ3 adding new resources, tweaking game rules and generally wreaking havoc in the game files.

BTW, I wish I will be able to add terraforming capabilities in Civ4. I would really love to be able to raze/build mountains in the late game or do neat stuff like raising islands out of the ocean like they are currently doing in Dubai...

I do appreciate the new modding capabilities, but I'll really enjoy it when you modders have your job done.
For now, I'm interested in the "city specialization", because I hate ICS. The early game is just a race for land.
And those GP could be a key feature to prevent it… I don’t really know, maybe it’s just wishful thinking.

I agree that modding is very important to giving a game legs and life beyond the first experience.

but if this game can't stand on its own legs without support from heavy modding, then its gonna be a sad story, like CTP2 i guess.

I'm looking forward to how the civics options work. I've never played SMAC, but the idea of breaking down government-types into various options intrigues me. And, I hope anarchy has been toned-down a lot from Civ 3.
