LOST - have you seen the following?
Cash Reward offered for safe return of one small, mistreated young puppy called "sense of fun" Sense of Fun, and also her sister "Sense of Humour" where last seen about 30 turns ago, when most, if not all, members of this forum started to forget that they are playing a game, and are not, in reality, the minister of war for a horde of barbarians, nor are they the Ambassador to the Great Banana Empire.
Sense of Fun was last seen cowering under the sofa, whimpering and trying not to get kicked as the Mighty General of 80% of his own mind tried to pull the hair of Grand Admiral Goober of the Assyrian Fleet.
If you have any information on where these two poor lost dogs might be, please post it below.

Hmmm. A dancing banana, that might be worth it.

Thank you for trying to explain, PLATO, even if you really are not breaking out of your own perspective when you demean others as sore losers. Probably the most frequent insult I've heard in DGs.

I will be happy to try to play with my perspective should I initially find something offensive, but I am who I am.
I agree with what you are saying about perspective, but realize it cuts both ways. If people do not like what you are posting, it is not necessarily their problem.

You see, I was told that this demogame was to be full of "great people...lots of fun roleplaying", |
Interesting. I was not told there would be a lot of roleplaying. Perhaps whoever told you that was not the last word, eh?

I have heard it said that people have taken things personally. My question is: Why? Don't you understand that it is a game? Is your ego so big that you can't take a little roleplaying? I syour self esteem so tied up in a demogame that you are willing to discount people just because they are trying to have fun? |
Fun is defined differently. Sportsmanship is defined differently...
I view Civ much as I would view a game of chess or of tennis. I am here to play. Unlike those two games, the multiple sides introduces an element of diplomacy in to the game, yes; and I may perhaps roleplay a little so far as pleasentries (EG blessings of Inanna are a somewhat common thing for Babylon to use as hellos or goodbyes). But I view the game as the main thing. I do not see roleplay as an integral part of diplomacy or any communication for that matter, and because of that, I often see little more than the player. I do not see two different identities, the player and their character. I can in formalized settings (e.g. UnOrthOdOx's stories in the PTWDG1) but in a diplomatic chat or in random public forum threads, I will read a poster's post as being from that poster, not some character in their imagination.
I think a good example for this situation would be the behavior I saw in PTW ISDG chat. A certain crowd, such as Master Zen, Trip, and BigFree, would joke around with insulting each other, their Moms, etc. I almost never gave or take in these rounds, they seemed happy to go at it, so I was happy to let them. But if they had dragged me in to it, I would have been quite angry with them for insulting me. I do not joke around about insulting someone's Mom. If I tell you she's an X, then I think she is. I think this situation is analagous. You are assuming that the things you are used to playing around with, used to treating casually, will be the same outside Horde culture. Newsflash: people are different. What you may think is funny others will be offended by, what you think will be taken jokingly may not be. Deal with it.
While the PTWDG1 Roleplay team was as much a part of the game-related fire thrown around there as anyone, I do think you should take some pages from their book elsewhere. Flames from their members were over game situations like everyone else: I do not recall them trying to drag the other teams in to their roleplay. We all knew it might effect their diplomacy, but it was all a very internal matter without trying to get others involved in it if they weren't interested.

Another load of old crap dont any of you people get it at all!!
Plato has not insulted any one of you ever unless personally attacked by one of you lot.
The posts he makes in character are just that in character as is the nature of a foreign minister of a nation in an alternate reality !
Really you all need to take a holiday somewhere nice and relaxing so when you get back you stand a better chance of differentiating between reality and roleplay.
This is all a load of crap, some people just blarting because things arent going so nice for them and have no other way to deal with it but to find a target for their petty abuse.
By profession im a builder so no big ologies here just plain straight talk, some of the down right insults levelled at Plato here are a disgrace, no an absolute disgrace !! i was the focus of some of this **** a few weeks back and I lost my rag back then. Plato i commend the way youve managed to hold you temper toward these jerks.
Any of you got in my face like this on my scaffold on my site id kick your ANUS all the way back to town !!

[sarcasm] Well. this is going well. [/sarcasm]

Look. I think the basic problem is that some people (like me) were confused when confronted with heavy role play mixed with OOC comments. Tone is a very difficult thing to read. Almost all of us are using pseudonyms. On top of that some are writting in different characters for different games. It is confusing and thus more confusion.
As for the people on this forum, I hold no grudges. It's a game. PLATO and Paddy seem like fine guys outside of this game. In EoD, they are real SOBs, but that is the "maniacal dictator" role they are playing.
I just think a heads-up on the heavy use of role play would have gone a long way to prevent these flame wars. I hope everyone can get past this.
As for being a poor sport. I don't mind losing. Babylon's in trouble now. That gives me a fun role to play in the game.

Sense of Humor! Sense of FUN! Where are you? *whistle* Come on boy! *whistle* *whistle*
