ASVAB question Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

So I picked up an ASVAB study guide, as per the Air Force recruiter's suggestion.

Ok, I've graduated college but the shtuff in there I haven't touched since sophmore year in high school. In the guide, they have stuff like genetics, fulcrums, biochemistry, and other great things that I have totally forgotten and I'm basically re-learning.

Is this biochem, genetics and Alg 3 stuff even going to be in there?

I plan on taking it in a week and a half.

genetics? biochem? I don't remember anything like that in there.

Just your usual verbal, mathematical, basic science stuff. Stuff you'll see on an SAT but easier for the most part.

they will have mechanical stuff like pictures of pulleys and gears and will ask you questions on which direction the rope is moving or the gears are turning. There may be some basic electrical questions as well.

I took it a few years ago, thought about joining the reserves.

I didn't even study.

I'm an idiot and I scored a 99 on it.

Which is the highest you can get.

Just take the damn thing, yes it has those things, but nothing that common sense won't let you figure out.

ACK!

Ok, I was having problems on the factoids part. Yes, I'm bad, but to justify that, I've been studying facts about prisoner internment and the costs per food per day for years now (college).

And algebra? Holy ****, I haven't used anything higher than

27 x n
63 100

kind of stuff...(sorry if that looks weird, but you catch my drift).

And my math skills are teh suck. But I wanna get into the air force, dammit!

It's more of an IQ type test than a skills / knowledge test (at least when I took it in 1984). I took it after partying most of the night and still did fine, and I hadn't taken a math course in 6 years by that time. Don't sweat it unless you are really hopeless at arithmetic & language.

Cool. The guide I bought has all kinds of stuff like biochemistry things. physics, and other goodies I haven't seen in a long time.

Jeez, I hope you guys are right. Thanks for the vote of confidence.

I took mine in my Junior year of highschool and got a 96. It's one of the reasons I do my work in the air conditioning and not carring around a ruck sack in the heat. I did know a guy who took it and made like a 20 on it. He took it again and made a little lower.

Do they still make everyone take that? I took it a year early because I knew I was joining. I didn't even go to school the day my class took it a year later.

Well, I hope the stuff on it is easy. Cause if there's Alg 3, shoot---even Alg 2, I'm screwed. But I'm hoping that if I score higher in other areas, that'll boost my score.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I took it 2 years or so, and got a "near perfect score", at least according to the hordes of recruiters who called me about it.

It is simple, nothing complicated in it.

Thanks. Like I said, everyone here has been really kick a** giving me their advice. I knew there were lots of people here that either are in, or served in the US Armed Services so that's why I asked everyone here.

I plan on taking the test late next week or early the following week. I'll let everyone know how I did...bad score and all...

Well we all warned you . Actually most people, including myself have no regrets about the military. Just don't expect it to be an easy job. Errr wait a minute, you are joining the air force, it will be an easy job. . They only work like 40 hour weeks. I heard even when they are on duty, they can leave base and carry a beeper. In the navy you can't leave base (or the ship if you are stationed on board ship) when you have duty. This may not be something you know about the military, but take note. Most branches (if not all) have some sort of duty days. There will be posts manned 24 hours (even if they are stupid watches with no discernable purpose). For us navy guys, we had duty when in port (while out at sea we have a normal watch rotation). So expect to have duty once every 6 days or so. Though I've heard of duty rotations like once ever 14 or 16 days. The air force might even have a larger span. Even junior officers have duty, but they can leave the ship/base whenever they want.

More about working hours. In the navy out at sea. I worked 6 hours on 6 hours off. that's 12 hours of work a day. This is not including collateral duties such as preventative maintenance on equipment you are assigned to. Cleaning, painting etc. Though in port, our work ours weren't too bad. Esp. after a long cruise. But usually 8 hours monday through friday, including duty ever 3 days or so. But I was also in engineering in the navy. Which always seem undermanned. There were only 2 qualified guys to do my job. So we only had 2 people to rotate. Most watch stations had 3 which would be 6 hours on, 12 hours off (not including collateral duties of course). And then they want you to qualify bullshit things like Surface Warfare. I could care less about a surface warfare pin . I'd rather sleep than do all that crap.

But that's the navy, I hear the air force works predominantly 40 hours weeks. They are essentually like a civilian job.

I'm just warning you not to get your hopes up too high. While none of us have any regrets, it isn't as glamorous as you might think. As enlisted you won't get a lot respect. And you will be expected to clean. That's something the recruiters don't tell you. You have to clean your own spaces. Though if you are on an air force base in the U.S. you might not even have to do that. Lately the military is moving towards a lot of civilian employment. It's great for providing jobs for the local community so the community is more accepting of the base in their city. Even navy bases had maid service for their barracks rooms (though not when I lived on base - we had to clean our own barracks rooms)

There's other sh it work too. And then there's the possibility of you being stationed in Saudi Arabia. I love the desert in Las Vegas. But that desert isn't like Las Vegas and the surrounding are. We have many canyons to explore, and do have trees and green plantlife at altitudes above 3500 feet or so. In the middle east there aint **** to do or explore. You'll pretty much be stuck on base. The only thing to do is drink at the base bar, or read. Though things are better now days since they have computers (we didn't have computers when I was in) with internet access. But you won't get your own computer. Though you may have room to bring a laptop. And TV sucks over there since it's 12 hours off. And you are relying on armed services broadcasts. And about the only thing we got were some playoff games and the superbowl (at 4 in the morning of course). And generally you have to watch what other guys watch. which may or may not be your cup of tea. Just don't expect to watch masterpeace theater.

Along with Saudi Arabia the air force has bases in Alaska, Thule - Greenland, and Iceland (though Iceland might be interesting- at least it seemed interesting in the book: Red Storm Rising )

Well, If I don't get into the A.F., I was thinking of going Navy----but w/a Psych degree, that would be very nebulous.

Army pays extremely well, siging bonus and pay (as well as being bumped to officer pretty quick w/a college degree...)

Which reminds me, does every service have some kind of signing bonus?

Just make sure any bonus they say you'll get is in the paperwork that you do when you go through processing. Otherwise, don't take any oath. Recruiters lie a lot.
