Gingrich fell because he overreached. The Clinton impeachment is what got him, but the Republicans never lost their majority in the House or Senate under him (even though Clinton won in a landslide in '96).

Personally, I'm glad Democrats are attacking him now. The praise they were heaping on him earlier sickened and worried me that he might be a Souter in the making.

Hopefully the Dems waste enough resources and political capital fighting Roberts that they have nothing left to fight with when Bush nominates a hardcore conservative to replace Rehnquist. It's always nice to see people get what they deserve.

Indeed, I'll take Roberts to replace O'Connor, and on of the hardcore folks to replace Rehnquist. Sounds like a fair deal to me.
