For highly technical products, it usually takes an engineer to make it work well. Sales engineers are need to make sure things go well when the product is actually demonstrated or deployed in front of/in the data centers of potential customers. In our last quarter, I closed half the sales of my company (we had 5 sales engineers).

There's definitely such as thing as website programmer and another thing as website deginer, and being one does not make one automatically the other.

The programmers write code that give the sites functionality, but do not necessarily make it look good, or even legible. Classic example would be some of those 1990s era websites with loads of javascript on a blinking orange background.

On the other hand, website designers may simply be using frontpage or some other program that does all the code writing after they've dragged around pictures on the screen.
