You speak of the majority of webdesigners; but there are those who have to be all-rounders. Webdesigners who can program and are creative with art (and can use Flash, Photoshop, etc) are hard to come by.
I write my own scripts, but of course, as most programmers will do, they will look at other's work to see how they did theirs. Same goes for graphics, you need that inspiration. I am stronger on the graphics side, but my programming side is catching up. So far I am sufficient in PHP, ASP, Javascript and Perl.
