Sherman is a hero of the United States of America

I don't see any major changes from the Civ 3 leader lists.

What are they going to do for science leaders for the other civs like Zulus or whatever... you know, the little African civs that didn't invent anything? or the mongols... are they even in the game?

i'm so confused

i liked the brown people in togas from civ1

If were talking about "Great People" (these Golden Age triggering things that come in 5 flavors) we shouldn't include Leaders like Reagan. For one theirs obvosly going to be a desire by many poly members to Mod Reagan as a Civ Leader a much more apropriate role regardless of your opinion of him.

Any historical figure who was a major leader should be excluded from consideration even if their other achivments would constitue grounds for being a Great Person. For Example Ulyses S. Grant wouldn't be included because he later became President.

Some idea of my own

Robert E Lee
Erwin Rommel

May I humbly suggest to consider the Barry Caudill's open letter about Great People?
quote:
There are five types of Great People in the game: Artists, Engineers, Merchants, Prophets, and Scientists.

Now I see that many of the suggested Greats where, in fact, *military commander*.
A few, like Leonardo da Vinci, can fit both in Artist and Scientist category (and Engineer is a close call, too).

So any suggestion we wrote should be followed by the fitting category, just to clarify.

e.g. - Ronald Regan - Artist

I don´t think the soviets would´ve stood on the sidelines and watched if the americans dropped the bomb again. Thus WWIII would´ve started. And no one can win a nuclear war

I agree 100%

There is that silly idea, still alive after 60 years, that nuclearizing anything is THE solution. IIRC is mentioned as a phase of the life of a child to believe that anything is not of our satisfaction must be erased from our life. Or maybe is our young bad imprinting of a mix of cartoon from Japan and video games.

From the time of "torture scene" in SMAC, I suggested to better underline during the game how devastating is a war.
A smoking ruin screen, a small summarize of casualties and economic loss after any few turns of war, could better help us to feel where the game is at border with nasty reality.

Anyone need to remember what did a single bomb on Nagasaki? Then look at http://www.exploratorium.edu/nagasa.../journey16.html

I'm tired and sick of "Must use the bomb!" cry. Go to browse there and think twice. Please.

but the soviets did not have many bombs in 1950. They had just "acquired" it.

of course, we did not have many bombs either. We were still perfecting enriching techniques I'm sure. It took years to accumulate the materials to build 3 bombs by 1945.

Possible Malian great people:

Scientist: Ahmed Baba.
Philosopher and religious scholar, his work focused on the promotion of scientific behaviour instead of blind faith. He was a renowned teacher at Timbuktu's Sankore university.

Artist: Salif Keita.
Current day's artist, he's probably the most famous Malian singer abroad. Generally speaking, Mali had a large artist caste (every noble had an artist attached to him), but there aren't too many names that are famous.

Engineer: Abu-Ishaq Ibrahim-es-Saheli
While he's not a native Malian (he's from Muslim Andalusia), he is mostly famous for his achievements in Mali. He introduced new architectural ideas and strongly affected Malian urbanism for centuries to come. It's under his guidance that several of Timbuktu's most famous buildings were built.

Tycoon: I must say I have absolutely no idea

On the same line of thinking, Cristoforo Colombo was italian (but discovered America sailing for Portugal).

Marco Polo was italian too, but this summer I spent my holiday in Croatia, and a Croatian turistic guide claim Marco Polo's family origin was from a town that now is inside the territory of Croatia

Yeah they say Marco Polo was born in Korcula. They even have his house there. I don't know if they claim that he was ethnically Croatian though.

Why dancers as great artists, but not actors?

I think anybody from the arts community could qualify as long as they were good enough. That includes any writers (including poets), actors, painters, sculpters, playwrights, and, yes, dancers. But not graphic designers.

And philosophers could count as great scientists (?)
Explorers could count as great merchants (??)
And any great religious figures (like Mother Teresa) could be part of the 'great prophet' club, IMO.
