Speak of Newcastle transfer news... .

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/s...=341274&cc=5901

quote:
Peruvian midfielder Nolberto Solano was tonight on the verge of making a shock return to Newcastle just 19 months after leaving for Aston Villa.

The 30-year-old winger was undergoing a medical this evening after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of the £1.5million for which he initially moved, with James Milner travelling in the opposite direction on loan for the rest of the season.

Newcastle confirmed the development, although with time running out before the closure of the transfer window at midnight, they were working desperately behind the scenes to complete the deal.

Rochemback going to Middlesborough, I have my doubts about this as I seem to recall him leaving Barcelona for being to slow in his tempo.

How will he fare in the premiership then?

But maybe he has improved.

I don't know about that. However, Solano is well-loved by the fans and apparently after the Owen intro, 15,000 people stayed around chanting for Nobby to be brought back. Looks like the board took the advice.

Another rumour I heard is that Nobby was watching the Owen intro on Sky and saw it, then demanded a transfer.

Yep, spent more than anyone outside of Chelsea. It's freaking amazing... the lack of left back is Souness' fault with all the money Fat Freddy was willing to pony up this transfer window.

England just escapes against Wales, struggling in their 4-5-1 formation. Though a bright spot seemed to be Beckham in the holding midfielder role. Maybe they've found the perfect role for Becks .

Yes . Now get used to be called a member of the Toon Army.

That and you can piss Agathon off by being a supporter of the same team he does .

As for the US Men's National Team... HAW HAW Mexico! It's nice to qualify this early and not back into the World Cup. Now we got 3 games to see how the kids can do on the national stage.

Are you kidding me? Both teams were more or less certain of a spot in the WC finals, even before that game.

If the US, with all its resources, lauds itself over a 3rd world country in an almost meaningless qualifier, lets hope to god they dont get lucky in the WC proper.

You should be like England, and criticise everything your team does, even the way they win.

So what? That's not the point. The point is beating our biggest rival. US-Mexico is one of the nastiest rivalries in the world.

Fans on both sides are easily fired up by the TV coverage, I doubt every player on both sides were feeling the same as the fans, they knew what was at stake - very little in footballing terms.

If you watched the match, and the celebration at the end, you wouldn't have felt that way. The match was very much a grudge match, with fouls throughout. And then the US team celebrated like mad when they won. Yes, that means they officially qualified, but they were going to anyway.

These two sides HATE each other, so I'm sure they were fired up:

"They (Mexico) suck," said Donovan, who has endured scathing attacks from Mexican players in their national media.

"I'm so happy. After we got that first goal they were never in the game. Hopefully that will shut them up for the next three or four years."

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/04/s...r/04soccer.html

quote:
The celebration was as much about qualifying for the Cup in Germany as it was about whom the Americans beat to get there.

The rivalry with Mexico has often been nasty, but the United States continued its recent dominance of the series, winning its seventh game in the last 10 meetings.

I remember some lauding of the team's performance, but you don't have the nasty history against Azer, unlike the US and Mexico, which want to destroy each other, no matter if the match is a friendly or in the World Cup.

You people get all fired up playing Germany, but THAT is all fan made. The players don't seem to care. In US v. Mexico, the players care just as much, if not more, than the fans.

This will help to show why Donovan (and other US players) was so eager to beat Mexico:

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/column...root=us&cc=5901

quote:
There was the incident during the 2002 World Cup match when Mexican striker Luis Hernandez said, according to Donovan, that he would find Donovan's mother and kill her. The trash talking aimed at Donovan resurfaced in the spring when Mexican goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez made an insulting remark about Donovan's mother in a magazine interview.

Is it any surprise that Donovan and the US wanted to kick Mexico's ass, no matter if both qualify:

quote:
"It's not just another game for me," said Donovan. "I clearly, absolutely, desperately want to beat them.

I doubt every player on either side was fired up like he was. Its well known Mexico (and Id bet the US) have one to two hotheads that show themselves up (in any game) and think they speak for the whole team, I think this was directed at those.

I dont think Mexico are a "dirty" team by any standard. There are plenty of Latin teams with their fare-share of divers and big-mouths, but I think Mexico is a pretty good exception on the whole, which you wouldve seen when they beat Brazil recently, whilst being consistantly beaten off the ball.

Germany are not a 3rd world country, its hardly the same as us lauding it over a country with the combined resources of one club.

There are certainly plenty of England players (past and present), that get fired up on the field by games against Germany, but by no means the majority of the team.

The rivalry is a very nasty one, and I'm positive that every player was fired up about clinching the WC spot against the dirty Mexicans and rubbing it in their faces. Hell, that's what we did in the celebration at the end, with a bunch of players wrapped in American flags, celebrating in the middle of field.

There was NO HAND SHAKING at the end of the match (very rare at the end of an international match), and NO SHIRT EXCHANGING. The match ended, and the US celebrated and the Mexicans walked off the field (and then their coach thought to talk smack)

And Mexico are very dirty against the states. The hacking they did at Beasley (and the yellow should have been a red, it was a shameful sticking out of a leg at knee level to take down a streaking Beasley) and Donovan was ridiculous.

It wasn't against the hotheads, but against the whole damned squad.

quote:
Germany are not a 3rd world country, its hardly the same as us lauding it over a country with the combined resources of one club.

Um... I know the FIFA rankings are definitive by any measure, but Mexico was ranked 5th on them.

And this "3rd World Country" has reached the Round of 16 at the World Cup in the last 3 WC's and it would have probably done so in 5 straight, but was banned in 1990 for falsifying ages in the Youth Championship.

Hardly like most "3rd World Countries".

Btw, if you hadn't noticed, Brazil is a 3rd World Country as well if Mexico is .
