Reading the news, some articles are pointing out that only 3 category 5 hurricanes have hit the US in recorded history. Looks like this will hit as a category 5.

"New Orleans has not taken a major direct hit from a hurricane since Betsy in 1965, when an 8- to 10-foot storm surge submerged parts of the city in seven feet of water. Betsy, a Category 3 storm, was blamed for 74 deaths in Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida.

Rappaport warned that Katrina, already responsible for nine deaths in South Florida as a mere Category 1, could be far worse for New Orleans.

"It would be the strongest we've had in recorded history there," Rappaport said. "We're hoping of course there'll be a slight tapering off at least of the winds, but we can't plan on that. ... We're in for some trouble here no matter what."

Probably not. Winds of that speed will pick a person up and fling them god knows where. Andrew was a Cat 5, albeit the strongest storm ever recorded.

Bunnygrrl has a little survivors' guilt, since Katie was such a ***** storm when it hit here. I told her not to, since there are two more systems out there that look like they will develop into tropical cyclones in the next day and a half. Guess I'm not buying any perishable food.

I hate that. Everytime you see them, the storm doesn't look that bad, and you wonder why they make such a big deal.

I wish I got to ride through a hurricane when I was in Mississippi, SC, or Mississippi. Unfortunately I missed all the hurricanes.

May I point out that New Orleans is the United State's largest port? If the port of New Orleans is severely damaged it will affect the entire economy.

It would probably be a lot quicker to take backroads...I've never been to New Orleans but I'm pretty sure I-10 isn't the only way out.

This looks bad. New Orleans was the town I visited on my last US trip and I really enjoyed it. I stayed at the hotel connected to Superdome. I think tourists should be pretty safe if they stay at hotels like that, they are built in solid conctrete and are high enough to have safe havens from flooding. Some windows might brake though. Would be pretty exciting, except for the fact knowing that people are dying nearby.

Almost 100 m/s winds, that's about 2.5-3 times the wind speed of the storm that leveled much of the forest around where I live in the beginning if this year. I was outside for 2 minutes to and it sounded like a 100 goods trains passing by. Parts of my house was damaged.

Forest Gump should sail out his shrimp trawler tonight, otherwise he might find it in Memphis or something. I hope people really listen to the warnings, also people who can't afford to leave.

The problem with that plan is that the winds get stronger as you go higher above the surface. However, for many it's the only option remaining.

Let's just hope nothing happens to the Superdome, otherwise the many thousands hiding out in there could be in extreme danger...


EDIT: And that just might be the most sobering weather forecast I've ever read.
