Here's some interesting grist for this thread's mill,
Salon reported today that the Blogisphere is up in arms over two photos that appeared on Yahoo News. One, showing a black guy waist deep in water carrying food, describes him as having looted a grocery store; the other, showing a white guy waist deep in water, describes him as having found food.
I know, I know: Blogs. I know, I know: Salon. But...
I was just watching CNN, and they were doing a news story on looting. And, my hand to God, this is how it was edited:
VOICEOVER: Looting in New Orleans, blah blah blah
IMAGE: Black people with food supplies
VOICEOVER: Of course, some people are just taking what they need to survive...
IMAGE: White woman with food supplies
VOICEOVER: Still, police have orders to shoot looters on sight blah blah blah
IMAGE: Black people with food supplies
I swear I'm not making that up. So there's your answer: it's looting when black folks do it.
Anyway, here's the Salon story, with relevant photos: http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2...ersy/index.html

I dont care if the folks are purple, they are all looting. Everyone wants to cry racism when it comes to this. Most folks like myself dont care what the idiot reporting is saying if pics are involved. The whites and blacks are all looting. And now are terrorizing the ravaged city which is just as bad.

You know, sometimes, it's just coincidence that things like Rufus' example happen.
What does it say about people, that they see something in there that may not have been intentional?
ACK! |
I actually think the instance of the photo captions is better explained by the fact that they came from 2 different news services -- one American, one European -- than by any racist conspiracy.
But the CNN footage? There's no such thing as "coincidental" editing, as anyone who's spent time in an editing room knows. Every choice is very deliberate. That's not to say that the people who edited the CNN piece weer consciously being racist. But the fact remains that, when they asked themselves, "what footage here says 'looting' to me?" they went with footage of black folks (who were not, in the footage, seen looting -- just carrying goods); and when those same editors asked themselves, "what footage here says 'just surviving' to me?" they went with the white woman. It may have been unconscious racism, but its still racism.
As for what it says about me? It says that I spent over ten years teaching media studies at the university level, and tend to have a sharper-than-average eye for this kind of thing.
