Thanks, just so everyone's on the same page here:

There are basically two groups of people in New Orleans right now:

1) The people who got stranded there (either by being too stupid to get out or not having the resources to get out) and are basically waiting on someone to get them out. Additionally there are those who chose to stay and guard over their property.

and

2) Hoodlums and Crooks who stayed in New Orleans because they knew they could loot the city after the hurricane. These people stayed for the sole purpose of looting the city and that's it. These are the people with the guns who are shooting at the rescuers and other "authority" type personnel. This is the group the troops are being sent to eliminate. Their scum, their preventing the first group from getting the timely and effecient care and resources they need, and in my opinion they deserve what their gonna get.

A lot of looting was done by the first group too. But they didn't stay in New Orleans to do it, they either did it because they needed the food/water are just saw an opportunity and succombed to the temptation. Their not inherently bad people. The second group is.

yeah, I pretty much agree

there is also crazies (maybe included in the second group)

that would like to kill people, but don't because of fear of society/law

and now have that fear removed

I had an interesting discussion with a friend tonight about this and she brought up a good point. It's possible that many of those looters are drug addicts who suddenly cannot get their drugs of choice and they're freaking out, going through withdrawal and stuff like that resulting in this madness.
