In any survey on quality of life, one important factor is the likelihood of not having your life taken away by a fellow citizen. Sadly, the US has a very high murder rate.

Even the supposedly rich countries like France. They just didn't have the same serivices we have in the U.S.

I haven't been killed, nor have I ever seen a gun fired at another human being. Murder is almost non-existant in the U.S. Unless you are in a gang. Domestic murder happens sometimes. But random killings are very rare.

3rd worldish? Europe's gap between its rich and its poor is much narrower than ours, and their middle class (as a percentage of the population) is bigger.

Once upon a time, we thought those were good things. If anything, we're the ones getting 3rd worldish.

Actually I hear about terrible crime rates in London. Sure most of it is petty crime. But crime is crime. No one likes feeling victimized.

and yes I am generalizing, as I wasn't including some of the ghettos in certain american cities. They can be pretty bad.

But I think you will find that surveys of this sort take the experience of the population as a whole in determining the quality of life, rather than just your own experience. So, on average, a citizen of the US stands a higher chance of being murdered, or of being put in prison, than those of many other countries.

you have a good point. As we are dealing with averages here. I just think the Europeans nations are very lucky not to have the population demographics the U.S. has. Please do not take this post to be racists. I'm counting all races equally here. People of all races are unwilling to work to provide a life for themselves. They are a serious drag on the prosperity of the U.S. Yes it is possible increased social support structure could alleviate this problem. This is the ultimate question. Could we nurse these people to make a life for themselves?

Dude, the Gini Index of the US has been getting progressively worse, not better. In simple terms, the rich is getting richer and the poor is getting poorer.

Besides, $ != quality of life. I am amused by the number of Usians who have an illusion that they are the same.

I am the poor getting richer. So perhaps I am biased. . I was poor growing up. Now I'm doing okay for myself. american dream.

It's just that I'm so used to american culture. It's nice finding the stores I want to find. And finding the products I like to find. And the freedom to explore the land I like to explore (we have large tracts of goverment owned land that you are free to walk on vs privately owned land of many older areas of the world)
