Black and White. Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

Has anyone else played this game? I know it's kind of old. I got this in the bargain bin for $10 USD. All I gotta say is that I am totally blown away. For a bargain game, it rock.

The AI is crazy. But the best part was when my avatar, which is a creature on the earth, told some villagers to follow him, pointed to where he wanted them to line up, then started dancing.

Then they did one of those "Soul Train" things where everyone walks down the line dancing. When my giant creature danced, all the little villagers chanted "Go! Go! Go!"

This game is crazy.

Here's a crappy screenie. I tried to get the "Soul Train" line, but I was blown away. If I get him taking a crap or chucking sheep I'll post it. The AI for my creature is nuts! He sometimes picks up sheep and launches em because he's bored....that's when I usually have to slap him and tell him to stop.

Put an end to popups!

WTF? Well, I would have liked it if I could have done one of those games where I just 'free build' and do whatever.

But I have picked up sheep and launched them into the sea...and, ahem, I have picked up my creatures poo and launched it at an opponents village.

I'm just blown away at the AI of this game.

I quite liked the village building. Call me weird but one of my strangest hobbies was starting a new village, populating it with exactly one pregnant villager then watching the village grow, assuming the baby was a boy ofcourse , if it wasn't well I'd just drop in a male.

I also liked seeing how much crap I could bring between levels, enterting the last level the portal stayed open for a good 10 minutes regurgitating crap, I'm talking thousands of villagers, stacks of scaffolds, enough wood to build a giant dozen wonders, dozens of artifacts, maybe a hundred miracle bubbles. I didn't find much time for my creature though.

I started playing again, but as neat a concept as the game is it just lacks the gameplay. Right now I'm building Giant slum cities in level 2. Biowarfare is kinda fun.

I hated it. Why should I care about the stupid villagers?

I admit it was my fault I didn't read up more about the game. I just bought it based on a good review. I should have known it was a silly RTS game where I have to feed stupid villagers.

Trust me if it was tedious I wouldn't have been doing it. See land 4 is great because once you've done the initial stuff it's pretty much a sandbox, so I build these big cities all over the map, dozens of wonders and so on. Then at the end I just instantly dump all the cities into the vortex using teleporters. The wood is just a few casts of Miracle wood. Only the miracle bubbles & scaffolds take a while to package, I make scaffolds while the cities are populating.

Usually throwing that much stuff in breaks the game too, it'll crash on save and stuff. Definitely not actually a good idea strategy wise either, a much smaller population will work.

actually I admit I suck.

I hate games where you have to draw stupid symbols on the screen to cast spells. I find this to be tedious and I fail to see how this is realistic (as if spells exist in any kind of reality that we are familiar with). And Yes I suck at drawing symbols on the screen. I can never do it quick enough.

The drawing of symbols was the funniest part of B&W... of course that doesn't say much since the game itself was pretty boring... I only tried it once or twice though...

They were doing a "buy 3 for £10" offer on a selection of budget games in my local 'Game' store. So i got:

1. Dues Ex
2. Heros of Might+Magic3
3. SimCity3000uk edition.

only to go home and find out i already had an unopened SimCity3000 uk edition

So it was back to the shop a few days later and i was looking for something to swap SimCity for, and not having much luck. I'd seen it mentioned here that Black+White was a terrible game, maybe one of the worst ever...........

Anyway the guy in the shop suggested i get B+W, which i did with a little trepidation.
Anyway the short story is that i haven't been able to play it much as my gf has been hogging it she loves it, and i've been watching her play it while playing Morrowind.

At first the game crashed in the first stages of the introduction level - so i got the patch from here:

http://www.lionhead.com/bw/downloads.html

Now it seems to run ok(hate those 'Sold Out' installers though).

So far i've been entranced by its charms, and i do wonder at its 'terrible game' reputation; so far i've found it much more entertaining than many of my more recent games.

So i'm feeling like Frankychan on this one - its very absorbing so far

I loved Black & White.

I got caught up in the hype about a year before its release. Six months prior to release, I was accessing news sites and message boards as part of my daily online routine.

When the release date slipped time and time again, I was extremely disappointed.

Finally the release date came. I rushed to my nearest independant video game store, for the filthy EB chain of stores hadn't devoured all opposition at that time, and I bought my copy of Black & White.

The game exceeded my expectations in all but one area. I enjoyed six months of immersive play. The type of gameplay where I would start at 7pm, and suddenly the birds would be chirping outside and I was forced to have a brief sleep before the new day.

Black & White was video game crack cocaine to me.

After six months or so, I became frustrated with the creature AI. I no longer had the patience to train creatures, so I eventually retired from the game.

I think Black & White was a pretty good game. I feel sorry for the idiots who didn't appreciate it.

That was my problem with B&W...there was no direction in it, at least that's what it seems to most of us who didn't follow the game development for a year.

I got it because I heard it was good, and was amazed in the first couple days with the critters...and then I quickly got bored and felt lost, never to play it again.

You had to make your own direction. For me it was playing it as an amusing sim / city builder game, when I was bored I could give the villagers flying or burning lessons. The creature didn't interest me that much, I mostly just let it run wild, for some reason it would always turn out angelic, maybe because the little direction I did give it was mostly positive. I'd have loved to have a creature that would mostly help the villagers, but at a terrible price - a hunger for children! Alas I wasn't much of a creature trainer and my dreams of the creche being an all-you-can-eat buffet went unfullfilled.

I played through the story several times. I particularly enjoyed building up my villages. Like Blake, I was obsessive about setting myself up well for the next world.

Sometimes I liked playing skirmish games for a quick fix of battle. I found it really satisfying to convert opponent villages, leaving the rival god with just his pitiful temple. Then I would send in my tiger to blast the temple into oblivion. I savoured moments when all my villages were thriving by pausing and just feeling like a god, zooming all around, seeing things from different perspectives.

I grew my creature and taught him all the spells. One tiger creature in particular behaved well, and I could always rely on him to convert villages out of my grasp. He would go and sleep just outside the enemy village, instead of coming all the way back to my temple.

There was heaps to do in Black & White.

well that seems to be the creature my gf has raised, much to her confusion - she first had a tiger, but that just seemed to have a nasty streak a mile wide, and didn't seem interested in learning anything other than eating the villagers.

Now she has a dance obsessed Orang-o-tan that does help the villagers for the most part, using water magic to help grow crops and then collect them etc. It even picks people up and stokes them before putting them back down. Still it does eat people according to its records, 4 so far.

The only time we've seen it do it was on the mission on the first level(before you go through the vortex thing) and it was that guy who wants to see your creature before worshiping you. Hes got a deep south american drawl type accent. Anyway he wasn't impressed with the size of our monkey, so she used the fluffy nice leash to attach the monkey to the guys house. The monkey started doing water magic growing trees around the guys place then would watch the response from the guy - he got none. Then he picked him up and ate him before she could do anything. It was shocking for both of us at the time - quite out of character, that we are aware of.

Interesting game - i think i might like it better than fable too as an early impression. I hope B+W2 builds on what seems to be here

B&W2 is definitely sounding like a lot of fun, with a little more direction than the original, and a little easier to train and direct your creature as well.
