Vel's Energy Independence Thread Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

A thread you started a while back has put me on the path of my next adventure, and I wanted to properly thank you for it!

You posted a thread about bio-diesel, and since then, I have been devouring everything I can find on energy self-sufficiency.

I think that's the missing piece of the puzzle for me, actually. I've been structuring my life for the past several years in such a way that I'm not beholden to anyone...doing the usual stuff, focusing on the elimination of all debt, so that no one has a claim against anything I own....but I still felt that I was missing something.

Your thread opened the door and showed me what it was.

Quite simply, when I DO get all my debts paid (house is the last one...workin' on that now), I'll still be beholden to "the grid" and the oil companies.

This latest crisis (Katrina and the gas shortages) only serves to underscore how tenuous a connection the lifeblood of a modern economy really is...and how easily broken.

Thus, I am making plans to say goodbye to both the oil company AND "the grid" and become entirely self sufficient.

My theory is that I can do that WITHOUT being all weird and living in a wigwam....I don't want that. I want to keep as many of the modern luxuries as I possibly can....just....self sufficiently.

So...my first quest then, is for a new vehicle.

My old vehicle is a '97 Ford Ranger with so many miles and dings on it that we shall assume it to have negligible trade value.

I'm doing this from a "cold start" (in that, at present, all my extra money each month has been going toward making extra house payments....at the start of the year, I'll put at least some money each month toward saving for a new vehicle, and when I get enough, I'll go pay cash for something).

So...a question to the good folk of 'poly, and especially the Euros....any recommendations on good diesel vehicles? I don't care about looks or styling so much....what I want is a utility vehicle (rugged, good for hauling), and good gas mileage (extremely important).

Thanks guys! And will do, Ted, tho I suspect that at least at the start things will be slow goings. I've got to wrap a couple of ongoing projects up in order to free up the fundage to do this thing right, but I'll get there...

Thanks for the tip, Alva! What kind of mileage are we talking?

And what's this show you mentioned?

It's a famous English '80 show about a couple doing just that.

My ex's Golf did about 100 Km on 4,5 to 5 liters, I'd 60+ miles to the gallon(?) something like that.

Have you thought about energy self-sufficiency for your home?

There are a few places around here where the home generates more power than it consumes, and the owner sells the excess into the grid.

Volkswagen Lupo. It's a rather small vehicle, but it does an astonishing 75 miles to the gallon.

that can work as well

but it has to be really really windy to make it economical (my college looked at a wind turbine,a nd despite being known for our wind, it still wasn't quite over the edge to profitability)

Got spare money?

Not that really windy here.

However, seeing as energy is a lot more expensive, I guess the profitability edge is easier to find.

Have you thought about energy self-sufficiency for your home?

More than thought about it, I am actively researching it!

My plan is to become *completely* energy independent, and I'm in the process of mapping out the strategy that will get me there right now....

Yep...energy independent. I don't know if I'll get there (my research thus far has led me to the understanding that in general, it's much easier to completely unplug from the grid if you're in the country...suburbia, where I live, makes it somewhat more challenging...but we'll see...we'll see....

Ahhh, well, the goal is not to become independent OF energy...that would require getting offline and living in a WigWam, which I'm not interested in doing.

Instead, I want to become independent from "the grid" and the oil companies....thus, drafting a plan to see just how much independence I can muster.

So far, it seems like it's going to be a pretty daunting challenge...

Lupo is too small and underpowered for my needs...haven't seen a picture of the Golf yet, but....I like reviews it gets....and, I found some intriguing info....pasting it here for reference later:

Biodiesel differs from regular vegetable oil (commonly referred to as straight vegetable oil or "SVO") only in that it is chemically modified using a mixture of lye and methanol to make it more suitable for running in cold climates and to meet strict industry specifications (ASTM D6751) so to insure proper performance. SVO can power the Golf, but it will clog the fuel system at low temperatures because SVO congeals very easily if it has not been modified into biodiesel. You can however purchase a vegetable oil kit for the Golf, which allows you to run SVO when the engine is warm, and regular diesel or biodiesel when it's cold. The system adds a second fuel tank with a switch and fuel warmer, at a cost of about $800.

GREAT tips thus far....I've found three then, that seem like contenders and big enough to fit into comfortably.

Golf
Jetta
Peugeot (which set some rather impressive records for mpg in Aussie land, from what I read).

No trucks that even come close to the MPG of the three above, sadly...

You got a problem with Indians?

Seriously...you can even be water independent - collect rainwater in buckets, dig a well for groundwater, and use your own process to purify it....

Have you thought about trash independent? If you reused and recycled you could probalby cut yourself down to a tiny cube's worth of trash a week (let's say a computer game box). But that still has to have somewhere to go.

What about sewage independent?

Food independent? Raising your own cows, growing your own corn?

Oh, and I don't mean to set you down the path of total nutdom, but it would probably be a good idea to have something to defend yourself with--once Hurricane The Whole US is FCKED makes landfall and you're the last person in your city to have food, people will go after you.

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

My wife and I just bought a rice field in the Phils. Rice is planted by hand. They plow the fields behind oxen type animals, harvest and clean it by hand. There is a milling process that I don't know about.

I made a video for my brother on how to kill and prepare a goat and pig. I just took video of the family in the Phils doing what they do... Here in the US my brother raises goats and wanted to know how to prepare them. He is somewhat energy independant. Anyway Vel, if you want a copy of the vid I'll make you one and send it to you.
