The NSDAP wasn't just a tool. It was a means to achieve a goal.
It's really a silly notion if you want to detach Hitler from the NSDAP.
It's not that Hitler is what made the NSDAP, it's the NSDAP (=Nazi) that has made Hitler & Co.

What I mean to say that in a country occupied by the Nazi's, one cannot make the choice of fighting the soviets without attaching oneself to the Nazi ideology.
It simply can't be done.

First of all, the Nazi ideology is strongly anti-communist (much more so then anti-capitalist).

Secondly, if one is to join the German war, there is only one option: joining the SS. You can't join the Wehrmacht.

In order to join the SS, you have to be by any standards a Nazi.

I can't find the source I found yesterday, but the figure is credible, given the numbers from other occupied countries.

There's also the question of how many were accepted of the ones who volunteered. I doubt it was more than half, which would put it close to the Norwegian figure Gangerolf gave.

I'm not sure that you are right. If the argument had been that the volouteers should fight the english, I seriously doubt that so many would have joined.

It is estimated that 3900 Danes gave their lives in German Service. Most of the surviving soldiers were sentenced to long prison terms when they returned home after the war.

Of those Danes that fell into Russian captivity the last one returned home in 1955.

Lots of Danes joined the German ranks to fight the commies, who were at the time not that much cooler than nazis. Just ask the Balts. Or Poles.

Some of them must of believed in the nazi ideology and wanted to be nazis? Sure... all of them? Not freaking likely. That's just a fact right there, germanos you act as if you know everyones motives when you can't possibly know that.

At that time not everyone knew what the nazis tried to do with the genocides and all that, even if they were see as extreme and murdereous. As far as Stalin goes, everyone DID know about his purges and ****ed up murdereous rampage.

just common sense. Just like demanding the heads of people say in France or what ever, who played kind to nazis but didn't help them too eagerly, as if they were nazi collaborators. I mean some of them, sure, all of them? Not freaking likely.

As if anyone of us has the balls to judge anyone saving their own skin when they have been overrun by them. I'm not saying it's understandable to give out your own people and start being their little toy boy and helping them too much, I'm saying the percentage of us would be pretty low to say no if some nazi troops stormed in, and said 'follow me'. I'm sure few of us would like to portray themserlves as martyrs, but the fact is, they were hardcore as hell, and when they came like that, organized and tough, there was very little folks could do, aside from what they actually did and the resistances etc. Most of us would have submitted right away.
