here. Does anyone know how to use the CivConverter utility to convert FW/MGE scenarios to Test of Time? I'm interested in converting some of the best scenarios to ToT and giving them a graphical upgrade.

I can give you a run down of the commands tomorrow Tech. There a bit hard to follow at first, but they make some sense once you try it out a bit.

Ask Steph too, I'm sure he's tried it a bit. Same with Curt.

Conversion is rather easy.

The method I use in XP....

*Put the CivConvertor program into a folder in your CIV directory.
*Call it whatever you want, I call mine Convert for simplicity.
*Select the scenario you want to convert to ToT.
*Make a Copy of the scenario folder into your 'Convert' folder.
*We'll call the CIV scenario 'RedFront', just for the hell of it.
*Take note of the actual .SCN file's name, you'll need this.
*Use the 'Run' command on your Windows start bar.
*With the run box up, enter this command.

c:\CIV2\converter\civconverter c:\CIV2\converter\RedFront\RF.scn

*Change the above file names and folders to suit the names you are using.

Voila!
You should have a nice ToT-ready conversion ofm your MGE/FW scenario!
Now get those giant events, BMP graphics and funky sounds made!

PS
What I do with my ToT scens is to make a work folder where I prepare developments.
I recommend copying the text files from the ToT original folder into a similar directory
and editing them with the chosen Scenrio values and info from your MGE/FW version. Only do
this if you want to add extra units and take advantage of the other ToT special features.

Hope this helps!

Put an end to popups!

Our taste in scenarios is pretty similar, good choices

At one time or other I've made alternative gfx files for most of those. I have units for Imperium Romanum, Justinian, of Celts and Iberians, Brown man's burden, Bonaparte, Quest for Asia and Kull's AE pair on my hard drive ATM if you're interested. Oh and a fully converted and tarted up Red Front of course

The rest would need converting to ToT.

From Catfish's guide:

'If a scenario uses a batch file to implement multiple game files, you will be required to run CivConverter multiple times, each time temporarily changing the file names, eg, units2.bmp would need to be renamed units.bmp so that it can be recognised by CivConverter.'

I have his conversion of Red Front on my HD.

I figured it was something like that.

Can you email me the RF conversion in bits and pieces? I'll try to get it up on my site ASAP.

I'll try to convert some of the other scns you've done graphical upgrades for as well, if you don't mind sending the files as well. Thanks.

Tired of ads?

I have done quite a bit of converting, and I would be glad to help. One reminder though, Civconverter cannot convert scenarios that use major objective cities. I have already tried to convert some of the above scenarios (Daroae for example) and ToT wouldn't open the resulting scenario. I have already done some converting, and I believe I still have The Spanish Civil War and the Thirty Year's War for ToT somewhere.

To converter multiple file scenarios, you will indeed have to convert each graphics file individually, but I am sure that ToT can directly read any Civ2 events or rules file.

Well, it sounds as if this will be easier than I thought. If Alex W can convert the scenarios for which Fairline has created alternate graphics, and both can find some way to send them to me, I can upload them to Tecumseh's Village. (my site)

Fairline, do your upgrades also include things other than units? eg: terrain, cities, icons?

Can you not just tinker with the objectives pre-conversion, remove all city majors, then put them all back once you've converted it?

I suppose you could, but I'm not sure that I have a functional copy of Civ2FW anymore. I haven't tried it in a while...

By the way, Michael Daumen has come out with his own ToT update of The Great Game, and I think Catfish has already converted Imperium Romanum; it should still be floating around the forum somewhere.

EDIT: Downloading now...

Alex, can you link to Catfish's conversion of ImpRom please?

Tech: If we're going to do this properly I'll need to adjust the unit gfx once converted to ToT format. I'm finishing up units for EA2 at the moment, so it'll be a few weeks until I can spend some time doing this. I guess you're busy finishing Warlords at the moment anyway?

Got spare money?

Well I'd love to help out in any way that I can in updating any of the above mentioned classics. Sadly though my skills center mostly around graphic making and such, nothing really in the way of writing new events and rule making (though I am getting practice with the pre-production of Verne). Still, my skills being what they are are at the disposal of the forum.

I'm also glad to see some recent interest in completing the unfinished Nemo epic "Battle of Britain". Now thats a project I'd love to help out with.

Ok, I am ready to distrubute the first batch of ToT conversions from Tech's list. These are straight conversions and should work fine with ToT v1.1 with the exception of some very minor problems. The rest from Tech's list need work before they can be presentable.

The End of the Bronze Age, by Kull

The First World War, by Jesus Munoz

The Prince of Darkness, by Techumseh

The Quest for Asia, by Stefan Hartel

The Cross and the Crescent, by Bernard Brosing

Tired of ads?

I am not sure whether anyone else is getting this, but for some reason, when I try to convert certain scenarios (in this case Colonies 4, 4 Seas Republic, and Spanish Civil War), Civconverter crashes in the middle of the conversion. It has nothing to do with the Major objective bug, since they are all MGE scenarios. In fact, this only happens with certain MGE scenarios, and I have in the past successfully converted the Spanish Civil War. Any ideas?
