Is it non-taxpayers pumping coins into those vending machines? Where did the $$ come from?

Full PM-box? Change here!

This brings about a good business idea. A business that would sell healthy food, but also good tasting food. You could compete with any of the dominating services such as Sodexo etc and still come up pretty high if you can put on a good show and catering, and bring the prices low enough. IT would be easy to campagn and promote it on that basis alone.

You could have lots of schools, work places etc taking your services, provided that you can compete with the prices.

Healthy image.

Then show how much it benefits companies to eat healthy, less sick leaves, more productive work, happier people and more productive minds.

It would make a killing.

Who is with me?!

The problem is that the school lunch programs have always been about giving Federal dollars to big business, rather than feeding kids.

Plus, I don't think my school cafeterias are up to making decent healthy food.

Purchasing from a vending machine is a choice. No one forces students to do it, and schools make huge amounts of cash that would otherwise simply not be there. The profits fund technology, extracurricular activities, building improvements, etc.

Student obesity is an individual's problem, and schools already serve healthy lunches as it is...what one eats outside school is what makes the problem...

Don't get me wrong, I believe paying taxes is one's patriotic duty, but this is money that won't be replaced, people aren't anxious to raise taxes.

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

All I'm going to say to this matter, that it's a sad sad situation, where some goddamn junk food provider or soda maker pays for your school stuff to such extent, that you are depending on it. And at the end, they're making money, while your kids just get fat and obese.

That's not a good deal.

Time to stop it.

PR, what would you do with your school system, given that you have no kids to send to it?

Pekka, the reason that companies serve rubbish to kids is that it is the cheapest food to produce. Have you heard about the Jamie Oliver thing we had here last year?

So? The food providers offer what the school or who ever bought. So what if it costs a little more to provide healthy food? It IS at the end the cheaper way, not to mention the right way.

It's when you start saving from things like these, kids, is when it's all going into shitter sooner or later witih the whole thing.

If we can afford it, why can't you?

Well done Terminator.

First they got rid of the sodas, now the junk food.

Having a healthy diet affects absolutley everything someone does. Kids learn way WAY better when they are eating right, and also have less behavioral problems. These are on top of the health benefits of not being chubby.

That junk food should have never been in schools in the first place. Because of our privitization whoring, once again many schools have been sold out to private companies, who send lots of processed food in bulk that is poor in nutritional value.

School lunches really are crap, and it's time to address that and get our kids a healthy foundation to support the rest of their lives.

You are part of society no matter if you have kids or no kids. Not wanting to pay taxes to the school district just because you have no kids is selfish and self centered.

Tadaaa exactly.

The sad thing is when not everyone feels this is absolutely obviously trivial!!

All you say is money this money that. I say screw money you can afford it easily. What's all the 'we so rich we make your teeth hurt!'. We can afford it, so can you, even with the lower taxes.

Buy less nukes and feed your kids right. There's a priority. Arnie is doing the right thing. You need to say **** Off to anyone who tries to talk you out of doing the right thing with education and kids - otherwise you're saying that to your own future.

Advertising junk food and fast food to kids is the main reason of too many kids getting fat. Also, school food tastes like crap. If it wasn't for those two things there would be less kids going to the vending machines in the first place.

Tired of ads?

$450bn, the US defense budget last year.

Contentious, I know, but they don't do a bad job of policing/protecting the world (depending on your standpoint), but some things are more important. Without investing in the future, then there will be fewer Americans to enjoy the safe, peaceful world that their armies are hopefully going to bring.

Hear, hear. Give them no choice whatsoever. They have to eat healthily or not at all. The fightback against the crap they are given at home has to start at school. Sure, some may be old enough to disappear to Maccy D's at lunchtime, but by the time the first grade kids get to that age, then they'll have eaten healthily throughout their school career and will be far less likely to throw it all away then.
