I know that it's out of fashion to fight for Democracy and Rule of Law, so of course this is a crime of the west.

Though, the story hasn't any details so, I chickenly hesitate to make any judgement although others seems to be weaker in the flesh.

Looking at the news now, it is a pity they did not run anybody over. They would have the perfect alibi; they could not see where they were going due to all of the smoke from the fire.

Then again, I would not have been averse to just nuking Iraq in the first place...

Running over a civilian or two would not have surprised me as much as does the possibility that the British just militarily assaulted a prison run by their nominal allies.

theres been talk the last few months of things getting worse in Basra, with Shiite militias, including Sadrist ones, taking control of the police - one had hoped, while I had - that this was something the national govt would address in the fullness of time - evidently the UK military was unwilling to wait.

I would wait to see what the UK has to say. But thats just me.

I was listening to the radio and they were claiming the two British soldiers were working undercover spying on the Mahdi Army which is the Shia militia loyal to Muqtada Sadr who lead an uprising last year. Supposedly the local police in Basra are either in the Mahdi Army or are sympathetic to the Madhi and they arrested the men on the dubious charge of spying. Unless the Status of Forces Agreement has changed since I was there local authorities legally have no authority over Coalition Forces so legally the Iraqis had no right to arrest British soldiers.

If that's true then it explains alot as to why the British decided to storm the prison and release their men.

The rule of law comes from the SOFA which says Iraqi authorities can't arrest or do anything to Coalition soldiers. Instead the soldiers all fall under their domestic laws and if a crime is commited then they get tried in their home country. Having locals who are simpathetic to the Mahdi "arrest" British soldiers who are survailing the Mahdi isn't legal to begin with.
