Hey Guys! It's now really easy to use smilies! Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

You don't need to remember the codes anymore. you can just click on the menu to the right. I just figured this out!

The "skeptical" smiley is one that I asked for!!

I still prefer to tease and troll (when I do) without smilies as it robs the remarks of their "edge" too much.

Damn, man! I mean yowza, your gift of noticing things is almost supernatural! The 'smilies' panel has been there only for, what, about a month, and now GP sees it! Miraculous.

Oh, and GP, in branching threads forum there wouldn't be a smilies panel

Get a bigger avatar today!

ooops the panel is actually to the left. (This probably explains why we haven't seen any more threads asking how to make smilies and being directed to the FAQ.) BTW, Stefu...I am a hip dude now: avatar, smiley panel, etc. SO TAKE IT EASY ON THE BARNCHING THREADS [/EVC mode]

BTW: the second stick it throws is like a stick of dynamite, but what is the first stick?

Oh....(insert "eager beaver" smilie...note to Stefu...invent one.) It is a way of arranging the threads so you can see who responds to who. It's used in the usenet. It's really better than this type of arrangement. Capiche?

First of all, WTF does eager beaver mean, and how could it be smileyfied? (it sounds dirty, though.)

Now, to branching threads. Branching thread format is a dying dinosaur that never really fitted the Web and is thankfully dying completely thanks to completely superior UBB/vBB format. Amongst many disadvantages of branching thread format are it's ugliness, the way it hinders discussion and the way it forces you to click click click to get all the responses and note they are nothing but spam. UBB/vBB, OTOH, allows one to quickly see all posts that are sent to one thread and reply equally quickly, it looks better and allows much more nifty features that branching threads lack. Almost everyone here thinks that UBB/vBB is better - GP is sole voice of insanity.

Eager beaver has a dirty connotation but not meaning. The meaning is something along the lines of "Wow...I'm so glad to talk to you about this"...or maybe the attitude of a kid in class who really wants the teacher to call on him.

We had a great collaboration with the skeptic smiley. People use if all the time. See what you can do with this!

Put an end to popups!

Branching threads are good since you can ignore all the replies to some off-topic comments somebody made. Or alternatively you can ignore all the on-topic replies You also get to notice wether somebody has commented on replies you have made, so flames could be skipped or concentrated upon, dependent on your disposition of the day.

BTW one of the premier boards on the Web, Slashdot, uses a branching thread format.

The problem with branching threads is that I tend to reply to more than one post at a time.

Each format has its own pros and cons.

When I first came to 'Poly I was highly annoyed by the fact the I had to wait for the entire thread to finish loading before I can read anything. I was also annoyed by the fact that I had to read all the impertinent messages together with the ones I wanted to read.

On the newsgroups I could watch the threads in which I am interested, and glance through the headers to see if there's anything that strikes my fancy

The only "problem" is that it will put the smiley at the end of the post...you can't insert it anywhere in the middle of your post using the menu...

It inserts any special symbol at the end of your post. I've been practicing my cutting-and-pasting skills quite a bit.

Tired of ads?

I really dislike branching threads. Its very easy for the reply you posted to get lost under another the thread coming from a different reply to the same post, and it is hard to get a proper response.
In a way, we can do this here, with the subject of the post line. If you reply with a quote, it automatically puts a re: The other person's topic. It wouldn't tkae too muh effort to change it to say reply to GP or whatever.
