Yesterday's question was one of the few I actually had to look up but I can't say I had too much difficulties with that. Found it in 45 minutes or so (I already found the meaning of 'war' within half an hour - that was basically enough to answer the question but I wanted to be sure so it took me another 20 minutes to find the actual answer).

Thanks to this question I did rise 9 spots (#37 -> #28) on the overall ranking so all in all a good day for me

Full PM-box? Change here!

I only found the meaning of 'war' and I concidered that to be enough. For sure since it made sence with the 'normal' meaning of war in front of it.

There are still 16 people above me

It's not fair !!! Gramphos just guesses, and guesses right

I did not just guess. I used logic and guessed, and I wouldn't have guessed if not for the delay and the fact that I had a big Swedish test today (most of it was Greek (as Homeros)).

My logic was simple: I guessed on the only thing that sounded as try to gain something.

Where did you find this? I'm a bit curious.

I found the word yuddha (war), but what part of that means cow?

You should've been searching for the meaning of the Sikrits word 'war' and what it meant in english.

I don't know anymore where I found it, but 'war' means something like "more cows" thus than it was an easy conclusion

ok Gram, you're just the smartest one

Al'Kimiya,

That's why it took me relatively long to find the answer: I too originally looked up the words 'war' and 'make war' in Sanskrit libraries and looked at what else they could mean but I didn't find anything. So then I just used a regular search engine and searched for something like 'Sanskrit word war literally'. This gave me a huge list of useless trivia websites that mentioned that the Sanskrit word for 'war' literally 'means desire for more cows'. After searching a little further and refining my search terms I found some sort of school project website about India which as a sidenote mentioned that 'make war' literally means 'searching cows' in Sanskrit. School projects aren't always the most reliable sources of historic information but that site combined with the useless trivia websites was enough evidence for me...

Yeah, I know he was 73. but i heard some false information regarding his age at the time that was posted. By the way, this thread has no need to be on topic. in fact, it doesn't have any right to be topped. The fact that civtrivia continues to pass as news pisses off far more people than just me. Okay...number of hoplites in a phalanx. I did get it right, though I was forced to guess. All my searches wielded different results. Numbers as low as 32 and as high as 300 are mentioned in the web-pages that I found.

I wonder where Firaxis have their "answer" from??

Well, I got this question wrong and I think it's because Firaxis (or whoever makes these questions) once again screwed up

I don't want to give away the answer but there are 2 things about phalanxes (or whatever the plural is) that are pretty much the same throughout Greek history (well, except for Macedonian phalanxes but even in that case the so called 'correct' answer is still not possible) and with the answer of this question these constants cannot possibly both apply.

Edit: Asmodean, I don't know what the smallest phalanx formation ever was but 300 certainly wasn't the largest. The largest phalanx formation that I know of was 120 men deep and I highly doubt that it was only 2 or 3 men wide. The largest formations consisted of thousands of men.

I wonder too. The Firaxis site said the source was '(Source: Columbia Encyc, phalanx)'. Well, I checked on www.encyclopedia.com, which is the online version of the sixth edition of the Columbia Encyclopedia, and it did not mention any specific size for a phalanx. See here.

I did find the original dimensions on two different sites, and made a multiplication . It took me an hour to find today's answer, and it only gave me 20 points . Where do they get the facts? I need that book(s). It would speed up the search. I think I've guessed to many times already, and I did almost guess (wrong) today, I had decided to guess if the answer wasn’t on that last page I loaded, and there it was another dimension.

Overhere in Europe I have very big problems by connecting to civ3.com. Some people say a cable has been broken in some ocean, other people say that our connection exchange in Amsterdam is broken. Anyway, yesterday it took me 1 hour to load the civ3 trivia page. (first had to get to civ3.com, than to civtrivia page, than I had to login and than I had to answer)

took pretty much time
BUT fortunately I could load apolyton quiet quick and I could read the 'news item' about the trivia, and could search for the answer
Thanks apolyton !!!!! Can I change my vote and say YES to the "should the trivia be a newsitem" question.
Cos when I finally got the trivia page loaded I had already found the answer 40 points in 60 minutes.

today is a crime again, those hoplites suck

Hmmmmmm, got todays answer wrong (after 30 minutes of loading )

really strange, I found a few websites that all told me the same answer, and no websites that told me the answer that Firaxis claims to be right. That makes 60 points lost with answers that might have been right...........
