As for the roads going through the hills; I simply changed the colour, so the roads going through the hills is Firaxis's doing.

I'm not sure about the jungle, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same case, because Firaxis had little or rather no control on how the roads will look on each terrain.

Thanks everyone for your comments, really appreciated.

Trifna: my thoughts exactly

About changing roads/railroads; it really is not that easy, the amount of roads and railroads there are and the intricate system they use to connect to each other is so large and complicated that it'd take me months and months to do it and it wouldn't change much AT ALL. I'd only be able to change the appearance, but I can't change the way they um.. 'travel'? and connect.

You will notice that a lot of the land has not been raised, it's quite a job in itself, I'd like to make it look really good and realistic, you'll notice one peninsular is raised and has a nice shadow and waves around it, I want to make the rest like that too, but the amount of work is quite big, there are like 100 diamonds and 6 PCX files, that's 600 diamonds I'd have to go through! It's time consuming and when I came to that realization, I decided to just let the modpack out.

When the editor is released and it has everything we all want, then I will get back to doing new graphics, hopefully they will allow new city improvements, new resources, new units, unlimited terrain, etc. Then we can make Civ3 what we want it to be, I can play my part by doing artwork for all the things we want to add.

For example, we may all want cotton to be a new resource, if you want a cotton image that looks like the same artwork as the other resources in the game, then you can definitely ask me.

Great work snoopy! I've been waiting for you to post your terrain improvements. I swear, the guys at firaxis must have put all of 15 minutes of work into the jungle graphic. I used to chop down all the jungle just to get rid of the UGLY graphics.

Now I use Snoopy(r) Brand Graphics and I'm a sane man again!

Keep on pumping out more improvements.

I felt that the jungle on the hills was fine and the forests on hills too, they seem to be ok, but maybe I will change them one day.

Thanks Krypter

How about two types of mine:

1. Hole-in-the-ground with wooden pilings

2. Angled shaft with cable-car and winch mechanism like in modern coal mines.

Also, could you have the snow on just the trees (forest-tundra)
and not on the ground; it would make the picture less pixelated.
Same problem with that beige pixelation on some of the forests.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

yeah, two kinds of mines would be nice if possible.

One type for grassland and plains with a hole/lumber/crane kinda thing. Open pit mine kinda thing.

One for hills with more of a conventional look.. whatever that is.

As it is the mines look like steamer trunks.

Hi sn00py,
Looks like you're doing a great job. One request: I was bummed to find out that pine and deciduous trees are not actually different terrain types, but just look that way. Could you actually go and make them different types?

sn00py - isn't it possible to add terrain types to the game? I thought a way had been found to add stuff - extra units, gvmts, wonders, etc - , even though it doesn't seem possible at first using the editor.

A Swamp type would be pretty essential to have too. I'm surprised they left that one out. I have no idea how the game would work in making random maps with new terrain types though - maybe something to ask for with the patch?

Get a bigger avatar today!

aha! I getcha now

well, no it can't be added, but.. it is possible to actually put other terrain in, except I cannot change its values, I can only change the look, and I can only put the terrains in certain places, meaning, you couldn't put the terrain where you wanted to in the editor, coz I would be changing certain terrains that mix with other terrains.

It's not so easy to explain, but it can be done, just won't work well at all..

Tired of ads?

What?!? Gasp - no extra terrain slots? Arrrrgggghhhhh!!!!!!!

I really hope that gets fixed in the patch, for crying out loud. I thought people were figuring out how to add all kinds of things that didn't appear possible at first glance, but I guess terrain isn't one of them.

The one terrain type that seems pretty expendable is floodplain. Perhaps you could make some alternates for that? If you do choose to keep that one though, it could use some improved graphics. I don't get the sense of it being a floodplain at all, and sometimes its virtually impossible to differentiate from desert (especially if the floodplain tile just barely intersects with the river).

What would be really cool is if you used the raised land graphics, and then fixed the floodplain so that the floodplain was down below the raised edges of the rest of the land. It would then truly look like something floodable. The part above the cliffs would be desert, the part below very green.

Great work Sn00py!

But, with the exception of the grey mountains, I personally prefer the original graphics. So, is it possible to just use the mountain graphics (with the original grass on them)? It seems there are more of us asking for this.

Keep up the good work!

sn00py,
Regarding roads, IMHO it isn't roads that are the problem, its railroads. When I first saw them, I guessed they in fact were superhighways, not railroads at all. Rather than the great loops they are, what if there were exactly the same shape as roads, but black instead of brown? Or better, the same shape but with crossties. Just a thought.

Another suggestion for railroads. Maybe they could be straightened out, as in SMAC. Those looping railroads make me dizzy. The roads are pretty bad, too, in that regard, but somehow they don't bother me as much.
