do you guys realise that in order for me to change the railroads, I would have to edit 272 graphics, and do you also realise that I'd have to try and understand how these 272 railroads connect to each other?

I'm thinking of the number 73984 here

If you ask me, I think Firaxis spent a ridiculous amount of time on these roads and railroads, there's far too many uneccessary looping.

btw, Firaxis, if you are listening, could one of you explain the Fat Roads? I do remember reading one time, that Fat Roads would appear if you walk on a road long enough, is that still in the game? I have not seen it yet, and if its not in the game, could u turn it on?

sn00py,
Given that there are so many railroad graphics to edit, that's why I was thinking you could just use the same shape as the roads, but change the color from brown to black. If you could then hollow out the centers of the lines and add crossties that would be super cool, but much more work. But at least this way you wouldn't have to worry about the relationships between each picture - the road graphics already all connect with each other properly.

I'm not sure if this is what you meant, but I whipped that up in Photoshop after reading this thread:

Probably doesn't do justice, but they're black and have white lines in the middle (I probably should've made them yellow, but I figured there's enough of it in the game already ).

Here's the file if you want it. You'll want to backup art\terrain\railroads.pcx first, just to be safe (I've only tested it in the editor so far, just reinstalled Civ).

About 5 minutes, so I could probably work on it some more.

It didn't take long because I didn't edit the graphics individually at all.

The way I did it, I just copied the original layer, removed the magenta/green transparency so all I'd have left was the railroad... desaturated, made it black (could've made it dark gray, I guess, but they just repaved the road in front of my office, so I got inspired by that ). Railroads already have "holes" down the middle (the space between the boards) so I just added a white layer under them, put back the colored transparency layer, applied the palette, and that's it.

Putting something like a gradient to add more detail would be a lot more work though, as you only have a few pixels wide to work with. I'll check it out sometime today though, see if I can work with the drawing that's already there and just use that to offset the black/dark grey a little.

Dark gray (not black, though), a bit darker on the edges (you'll probably never really notice in-game, though, I only see the edges in Photoshop when magnified) and yellow lines in the middle.

Snoopy - your graphics looks great!

But use the ZIP-format for ALL your downloadable files, please. One shouldnt have to install RAR-supporting software, for no other reason the unpacking those few files - then uninstall this "never to use again for other purposes" compression-software. RAR is rarely used by anyone today, except for the closest grieving ones. So be consequent and go for the ZIP-format only.

Also, I have a suggestion about the irrigation-graphics. Many people like your version, but I wonder if you could experiment with a secondary downloadable alternative as well. Something that looks like the Firaxis original irrigation, but with straight obviously manmade crisscrossing water-ditches instead. Something like the Civ-2 irrigation, but without the grain-colouring. I want to be able to see what type of terrain-type it is behind the irrigation-improvements.

well, what we then need is one, who creates with the map sav files which have right starting positions the for all, as the gavecopy tool doesn't work for all.

But then it shouldn't be exact 16 factions, as there will be a logical failure then:
the americans not an original race are. I in america are set the original races *and* the americans, then there isn't any more relation to the real map.

I suggest for such to let the americans out of the sav then.

*** WARNING: GRAPHIC CRASHES GAME *** Got spare money?

*** SNOOPY!!! WARNING!!! ***

GUYS! Be careful before you install Snoopy's Wonders splash pages from the site link he posted.

The Forbidden palace (that I know of) crashes the game when built. The problem is that the file is over 200k in size and the original was just 80k ...

This is a confirmed problem.

I used Snoopy's graphic and the game crashes ... i replaced it back to the old one, and it runs fine and dandy.

Snoopy, can you please fix this and verify your other graphics please?

>> ASIDE: MODS, I can't start a thread, only add to one. Is this normal?

Can someone please post this warning in a more prominent place. Thanks.

Well, I lost the color instructions I had set up for each of the terrain graphics, I couldn't work out which one makes the green, so I couldn't match it.

FYI. There is definately something different about the new graphics that messes up road continuity. Changing from the standard graphics to Snoopy's caused roads through a forest to stutter.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Nice new graphics snoopy, maybe you'd like to help me on my game, if i ever get some time off playing civ3 and can finish it

I could fix the mountain hills in paintshop/photoshop using a transparent brush and masking off the trees.
I like the snowcovered trees ,temperate trees and jungle especially. The coast ripples are good, be good to have even more, with white water around the coast.
The Grey mountains are nice, I have some plans on mixing up the grey/desert mountains somehow .

Those black roads look interesting Dark Penumbra, reminds me
of Railroadtycoon2's railways actually. Would be nice if some streelights/signpost things could be added, maybe even roundabouts.
Modern highways/motorways are actually a light grey colour(in england at least) maybe you could have a mix.. the small curved sliproads remaining black, others bigger grey highways.

Would be cool to have more terrain types for scenarios at least, with Utah style dry rock cliffs.. and bare desertplain thornforests.

I don't understand that fat road thing, it would make sense if they changed with a new tech like combustion/corporation to black/grey asphalt roads.

Maybe someone could try using real photos to use real life mountains in the game.
I'll have to tinker with things myself.

Need Rail Art Revision Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

I just installed the latest rail art which has the rails colored much darker. I think we have gone a bit far with the heavy dark colors. The rails now heavily dominate all the terrain they rest upon and I feel are very distracting. Is someone up for a revision that really tones them down a bit(ok..I confess...I did not save my original rail file and REALLY hate to reinstall my heavily modded CIV just to fix the rails). Thanks
