[...clearing throat...]

Ahem. Assuming I haven't been whooshed, I understand that it's a tradition to start an "I'm new here" thread. Not sure what I'm supposed to say, but I guess a brief introduction is in order.

I'm a long-time Doper (as in Straight Dope Message Board), and I've spent most of my time there in Great Debates, wrangling with materialists, creationists, and other aberrant philosophers. I spend some time in the BBQ Pit, because I like writing parodies.

In real life, I'm married (second wife), pretty old (mid 40s), but the heart and soul of a kid. I develop websites and related stuff for a living, and lately, I've gotten back into playing Civ. (Got a pretty great game going currently.)

Anyway, fire away. I have a pretty thick skin, and I can tolerate just about anything. Except ignorance, I guess. Any questions?

Lib

Of a sort. I took all the good stuff, you know the basics: metaphysics — objective reality; epistemology — reason; ethic — self-interest. But I discarded all the Ayn Rand worshipping, and all the weird crap, like the official esthetic and such.

But actually, I do refer to myself as a Libertarian Objectivist Christian.

A communist? Funny thing is, people assume that we're dire enemies, what with Libertarians tending toward fiscal conservatism and all. But actually, the heart of libertarianism is its noncoercion ethic. So long as all are volunteers, I have no problem with a communist collective. Not my cup of tea, but hey, to each his own.

Speaking of which...

Maybe not. But if you're gay, that's just one aspect of you, one that doesn't scare me. I respect a man who's peaceful and honest (peace and honesty are the essence of libertarianism), and I don't begrudge his freedom to pursue his own happiness in his own way.

Well, "Objectivist" is a broad brush. One thing's for sure, proving it the other way around is easy enough. Rand hated libertarians. She scornfully called us "hippies of the right."

Do I ever! My favorite are the absurd scenarios. I call them Giant Squids because one debator asked me once what libertarianism would do if giant squids were to arise from the ocean floor and present original title to all the property in the United States. The guy was dead serious.

Haha. Hmmm, thanks but I'm not really a communist at all. It's a "little" inside joke here, every European who votes for Labour, Green, Social-Democrat or any other left wing party is called a "Eurocom", abreviation of a European Communist. Apparantly the rigth-wingers here think it's offensive or something.

Seeing as Bob Dornan is the only person that really uses Eurocom, consider him all 'right-wingers' seems to be a streach, eh?
