Then you would always have to use it on a downward slope - unless some of the kinetic energy moving downhill is stored via a generator for uphill/flat travel.

If the machine only works on gravity, then it is completely useless, or a perpetual motion machine.

It's not a perpetual motion machine because it requires energy in the form of a counter balance (that's why it runs on batteries).

And I'm telling you that what you're proposing violates:

The first law of Thermodynamics
The second law of Thermodynamics
Newton's theory of gravity/mechanics
etc.

Ummm...in other words, gravity does not "pull you forwards"

Gravity pulls you down, not sideways.

If you lean forward on this machine, it automatically engages the drive wheels forwards. This has the dual effect of keeping you upright and driving you forward.

"8mph is at least twice as fast as you walking. Get on a treadmill and set it to 4 miles an hour and you'll see what I mean."

-When I'm not specifically walking with someone 5mph is my average walk speed. (Yes, I actually went to a treadmill a couple months ago to figure this up.) I can maintain a walk at 6mph for about half a minute before I slow down or break into a jog. And I can maintain 5mph on a 10% slope easy... I'm not sure a wheeled vehicle like ginger wouldn't be slowed down.

"Walking is for wussies."

-Tell you what, how about we drop you in some wilderness area 10miles from civilization and tell you to walk. Since it's so wussy you shouldn't mind.

"But think about city use. Who is going to drive uptown when they can simply hop on and ride? It'll be 4x faster than walking, and won't cost gasoline! No traffic, no road rage, no hefty insurance bills. Hell, why would anyone use a car when they could use this? It would pay for itself if you factor in cab fare/gasoline, insurance costs, etc."

I agree with everyone who thinks that this will eventually be revolutionary. I may be one of the first to purchase it. Consider my circumstances...

4 blocks to work
4 blocks to get a cup of coffee on the weekend
9 blocks to the national mall
4 miles to the closest theather with stadium seating

This will be an ideal device for me. There are a ton of places that are just out of walking distance, but well within striking distance for even a 10 MPH device. It would vastly increase the real estate values of locations right outside of the city core.

Just think it through!

I think a lot of people are ignoring the fact that the computer started out as a device which people thought "that's it?" to. You have to think of the inovative ways this motor and machine can be used, not only in industry, but for personal use. Think of all the things it can be modified to become

"Isn't that what a bike does for you already?"

Bikes get you tired and sweaty. Also, it's tough to wear, say, a suit while riding your bike. Lastly, there is no way I'm going expend any effort at 8:30 in the morning.

Regardless of cost, this fits my lifestyle.

The only potential drawbacks are where to put the thing once you get to where you are going, and whether there's any place to put a couple of six packs.

Damn straight. That's the real drawback using a bike. That and using it while there's 4" of ice on the sidewalks and the -40 wind is blowing in your face.

"You lazy, lazy bastard."

Nobody's going to go broke underestimating the amount of initiative I have before I have my cup of coffee in the morning.

"That and using it while there's 4" of ice on the sidewalks and the -40 wind is blowing in your face."

Apparently, this solves the ice problem. The -40 wind reflects on your sanity in living in such a place rather than the method of transportation.

I routinely walk more than that avoiding the use of the free bus service we have around campus for the purpose of getting exercise. Such a device would only lead to me getting fatter. And i agree on the suits, and disagree on the insanity.

Facing down -40 winds is a perfectly rational and sane activity. I've skiied in -50... that is not sane. I've felt as low as -75C winds. (Let's see IIRC I was wearing 2 coats, 3 sweaters/sweat shirts, 1 T-shirt... 3 pairs of pants)

It's slower than a pair of rollerblades. Even a bloody skateboard is as "revolutionary" and efficient. The one pro that it has over the aforementioned conventional wheelers, is that you don't have to use your legs in a casual stride to power your lazy hulk of a mass to and fro. This in itself will not be seen as a pro when you ballon past your current 230 pounds. For those of you who are afraid of walking 4 blocks to work - I recommend being amputated at the knees, thus aquiring an actual reason to use this toy

Otherwise, happy purchase to you. 3000$, plus another 3k for eventual liposuction - hey, big spender!

"Wind chill factor doesn't count."

-Montreal hardly ever hits -40 without it. Without it I've felt -50C... with winds that pushed it to -75, just shy of negative triple digits in F. That was in a great place called Sainte Anne de Beaupré.

I know; it hits once every 5 years or so...rest of the time winter low is ~ -35

Is Ste. Anne de Beaupré in the Gaspé? I seem to remember the name, but I can't place it.

"I know; it hits once every 5 years or so...rest of the time winter low is ~ -35"

-Yeah, I remember when I was in 3rd grade it hit -37 and -39 on non-consecutive days. We were still forced to go outside at recess... that's the part where you get that wonderful feeling like your face is falling off (which it actually is), but that was fun.

"Is Ste. Anne de Beaupré in the Gaspé? I seem to remember the name, but I can't place it."

-No, just east of Québec City on that road that leads up the north coast of the Saint Laurent. It's not too far from Mont Sainte Anne (one of my favorite skiing places)

"Stupidest thing I ever did was ski in -25 weather sans gloves."

-Stupidest thing I ever did was ski in -35 weather. Oy, at that point whether or not you have gloves makes about as much difference as whether or not you have a T-shirt at -10 or not.

damn, man... usd3k... far too much.

i went to the website, and i must say, i'm less than impressed. the three times i've been there, two of them resulted in 404 or 403 errors, and this last time, half of the links and feature buttons don't really work...

but then again, judging by website isn't the best of plans.

it sure as hell isn't selling it to me, though, it's making me less interested.

If it wasn't bad enough, but hey, this is where it's going; and there's no way on Earth I am ever using anything like that. God gave me two legs, I think they run just fine. Besides, there are African Tribal warriors who RUN 17 miles nonstop, EVERYDAY and its no problem for them.

Stop being so unhuman, and walk.
