Oh, since I know the world won't change in a way where we will be less lazy, I should say that this is a great thing, a VERY great
thing.

If I asked a Moron to build a city, he'd build New York, if I asked an intelligent person to build a city, he'd make sure it had plenty and plenty of space for people, open space! NO ROADS!!
A lot like what Rome used to be, except buildings are not so close to each other, they were open, exposed and in the light.

Cities need to be opened up, healthy, easy to maintain, not messy, closed, hard to maintain, complicated, etc.

These Segways, can make our cities look like those peaceful futurisitic type cities you see in movies where everything is perfect. Think about it, the Segways are not that stupid. I hope we do only use cars to travel from one city to the other; and just use segways to get around in the non-pollutant, open, finally nice to live in cities.

Amen Snoopy... Regardless of the technical innovations involved, the ultimate function of this machine is ridiculous. Use your legs!

Smash - your comment brings to mind a relevant example from the 60s (and long since forgotten); fold-away, transportable, two story homes which were to "revolutionize suburban America"

If you're ever walking Granville island, and see some thin bastard kicking fat yuppies off of these lard-ass machines and into the harbor, come say hi

What's wrong with New York?

OPEN SPACE?!? Now there's a dumb idea. That makes walking harder by making distances longer. Density should go up not down. More pop. density, means more open land outside the city, less distance between two things in city, etc. If I designed a city it would be crowded on a scale that New York can not even compare to, of course it would have multiple street levels.

That's not the case. If we ignore Babbage's inventions to go straight to the electromechanical beasts of WWII, we see that they were built with specific applications in mind. For example, a computer called Colossus was constructed to aid in the breaking of the German Enigma code.

Unlike computers, Ginger is just a solution looking for a problem.

Ok, it may not be an engine, but the control mechanism is revolutionary in itself. Imagine the technology in a few years, when you add some mph to it, and have something that can go 25 mph with minimal charging.

Tired of ads?

Er... e-Books are a solution to real problem. I can carry nothing in my hands all day, and still be carrying several books... if eBooks were further along. I can fit my palm pilot on my belt and the keyboard on my pocket, and I have decent word processing software on it. I've written an English paper while doing laundry.

e books are wonderful, seeing as carrying two three books is unwieldy, not so much difficult in terms of weight.

it's a hassle to be carrying two thick textbooks while trying to balance two loads of laundry while fumbling for your wallet to get the card out to swipe a machine.

as for urban density....

more open space?

see, that's the problem with all the southern cities. nothing BUT open space.

thus, more cars, thus, more roads, thus, more smog, thus, no pedestrians, thus, more open space.

E-Books are too damn expensive. And where do you find textbooks for your classes in electronic format?

I never have more than two text books on me at any one time, anyways.

"Bah, just carry some books! Just expend some energy!"

-Walking with stuff isn't as fun. One of my classes is nearly a mile away, besides when I have something in my hands I can't break into a jog if I'm late. Plus, piracy is a lot more difficult with non-electronic media

"E-Books are too damn expensive."

-Ah, if only they were widespread enough to be freely available on Morpheus

"And where do you find textbooks for your classes in electronic format?"

-www.htdp.org, the most horrible book. My lin. alg. book is also online. I am thankful my CS book is online, because it's not worth the paper they wasted printing it, and we have to have it to know what our homework is.

I still think that a joystick or something like that does that same thing without the added complexity. We still don't know how reliable that control mechanism is, it may easily break down.

Oh please, HDTV is not a solution looking for a problem.

Look into it: HDTV production costs are cheaper (100% digital). The quality is far superior as well, plus it has a more appealing aspect ratio.

I think it's about time TVs became digital, too.

It's like FM vs. AM. You can get the music in AM, but the quality sucks compared to FM.

e-Books is a silly idea for several reasons:

  • All computer displays are poor substitutes for paper. They have a much lower resolution, and thus a lower density.

  • New technology should produce new solutions to problems, not reinventing the wheel

  • e-books are fragile and easy to break

  • e-books can't survive doggie attacks

  • e-books are expensive

Palm Pilots are not exactly e-books they are PDA's (personal data assistants).

Sometimes technological merits alone can't drive adaptations of new technology.

Think of all the existing equipment, all the legacy production, and the investment necessary for an upgrade.

Plus it's always the demand side that does all the driving. If people just don't see the point for a particular product or technology, it's just not going to fly.

Increase Your PM Length

"All computer displays are poor substitutes for paper. They have a much lower resolution, and thus a lower density."

-Er... you only need one page since the text can be refreshed You could even set it to scroll up the screen slowly.

"New technology should produce new solution to problems, not reinventing the wheel"

-Books are heavy is a problem. Try taking 4-5 textbooks on a vacation where you have to carry them in your hand for a decent amount of time all at once.

"e-books are fragile and easy to break"

-Depends on your carrying case. They are more compact than real books, and could be made waterproof and readable at the same time.

"e-books can't survive doggie attacks"

-Sure they can, besides your fault for allowing them to be exposed to a doggie attack.

"e-books are expensive"

PDAs allow eBooks to be displayed on them, eBook reader software will become free if the need is big enough (someone will make an open source reader). So no additional cost on top of a PDA, and you have the PDA anyway, why also carry a book.

Your argument would serve a purpose if they didn't require broadcasters to send HDTV signals by 2006.
