quote: Ramo, we don't fund Saudi Arabia, |
That's a semantic distinction.
quote: and our troops only protect them from a barely existant external threat; |
And insure that there are no internal threats.
quote: meanwhile, no Turkish terrorists are attacking our country, so I don't think that's it. |
For how long? Frankly, I wouldn't be suprised if a Kurdish Turk destroys the next WTC. Hell, they've been through enough already.
quote: but they need those troops to protect us from Iraq. |
Riiight. Saddam has both the capability and will to wage a regional war, almost certainly involving the US, right now?
quote: Without US support, that country might fall to the Islamic fundamentalists, and Saudi Arabia is too important for that too happen. |
I think your history books are a wee bit dated.
Barring the Taliban itself, Saudi Arabia is probably the most fundie regime in the world. Hell, the Taliban are offshoots of the Saudis!
[Qutoe]They don't like how we fund Israel, but Israel's economy is already hurting and if we suddenly withdrew aid, the economy could worsen and with it the political system- and without our aid to Israel, Sharon would be free to do whatever he wants.[/Quote]
Bull! We've never limited aid to Israel to insure the lack of human rights abuses; what makes you think we'll do so now?
quote: You have to look at their stated goal- to unite the Islamic countries into one fundamentalist state- I do not believe this is something anyone but the most extreme libertarians would advocate us doing nothing to stop. |
I fail to see what, exactly, we're fighting for if we murder children for who their parents are.
quote: The world is a complicated place, and no matter what decision you make, that decision will have consequences. |
The problem is I can't understand complex systems. I can't get past trivial moral details such as the Turkish genocide of Kurds, perhaps the worst of the last decade.

Shi, the problem is that we will not be able to find any one solution that will piss nobody off. That doesn't mean that we should just throw up our hands and say it's pointless to try and win over the muslim world. It is in our own best interests if we don't paint ourselves as their enemies. Humanitarian gestures go a long way towards changing our image. It's not like we have to make them out of sincerity, or anything. If the US is seen globally as using its resources to aid the disadvantaged and encourage peace, how many people will be inclined to consider it the source of all their problems?
The world is complicated, and we need to stop relying on simplistic solutions like the use of force. Three thousand years ago, in the Art of War, Sun Tzu said that fighting must always be the last resort of any general; you should only fight when you have absolutely no other choice. Politicians need to learn the art of subtlety.
In any case, we don't export culture. We export sh*t. If the ubiquitous McDonald's quit spreading all over the world, life probably would be easier for us.
