Last time I was down that way was to pick up stuff from Pease Pottage Service station that one of the office partners left down there on his way back from Brighton. Got to claim about £40 in mileage expenses

Actually, given that I live next to J4/5 of the M25 (near Sevenoaks) its about 45 minutes away at the speed I drive.

If you know where they are, you slow down for them, so they end up reducing traffic speed, which is what they're there for really.

Andy is right. Concentration is lost in people constantly keeping their eye open for a speed camera. Accidents can be caused by people seeing a camera and slamming on their brakes. Nice concept, but in practice, not that functional. All that happens is that people get used to their location, speed everywhere else except where the camera is and slow down.
