Yes it was sort of a...we'll compromise England. We'll take everything south of '49. They said no. Then he said, fine, we'll fight you for 54'40. Then they said ok fine, '49 it is. (Except of course the tip of Vancouver island)

Considering the US doesn't have "rulers" per se, I'll give you the top five presidents.

1.) Franklin Delano Roosevelt
2.) Bill Clinton
3.) Woodrow Wilson
4.) Thomas Jefferson
5.) Abraham Lincoln

Oh, and *End*, you probably won't even see this post, but the Old Testament isn't just a fairytale storybook. David, Soloman, etc., were as real as Hammurabi, Nebecunzzer (sp), and their Egyptian counterparts. There is actually historical documentation. Discounting there existance is like ignoring part of history because it doesn't "fit into your belief."

You put Clinton up above Lincoln and Washington and TR?

Clintion searched high and low for a legacy and only found one in that he was the first to get caught with his pants down in the oval office.

1. Washington--He helped define the presidency. Kept America from becomming a monarchy or a dictatorship.
2. Lincoln--Despite not being the saint most people made him out to be he did hold the Union together
3. Teddy Rooselvelt--He was a maverick. He could have been known for a lot of things, but he was the first to set aside land for natural parks.
4. John Adams--Not much of a president and probably a hard person to like, but he stuck with Washington's mojor precidents(except that he was a member of a party) It couldnt have been an easy task to be the second president of the US after Washington. It's not enough that Washington acted in the manner that he did. Every President in the early years gave the country credibility when they served their time and left when they were supposed to.

Put an end to popups!

Some comments before I give my own top 5 list:

1) How Wilson and Clinton could be in anyone's top five list of anything, I'll never know. It's like saying that Carter was a good President.

2) Zealot was way being too kind EiF on the first page when he used the word arrogance on the first page. Willful stupidity or ignorant prejudice would have been more apropiate choices.

Now for my list:

1) Washington
2) Jefferson
3) Truman
4) Reagan
5) Lincoln

Crap is right. Personally I would even subtract Pearson, Trudeau and St. Laurent from the list.

Especially Trudeau. "Separatism is dead" Trudeau. Salmon Arm salute Trudeau. Establisher of that fine tradition of suspending civil rights (October Crisis) that our current PM is continuing right along post 9-11. NEP Trudeau. Trudeau that gave us a clueless constitution that defaults to the Supreme Court. Blame Burnt Church on Trudeau. Establisher of the fine tradition of Quebec Referendums Trudeau. Am I starting to rant? Sorry about that.

Far as I can tell we have always been ruled by morons.

BTW, last time I looked at the map, a chunk of Vancouver Island, some of the Gulf Islands, much of Ontario, and parts of the Maritimes were south of 49. Pele Island is the same latitude as northern California. There is all sorts of border wierdness. Pt. Roberts and a chunk of land north of 49 in Manitoba are American. I think Whiteknife or Yellowhorse or one of those northern cities actually had to be moved because it was originally settled on the US side.

54-40 dealt with the territory west of the Rockies from 42 to 54-40. The Canadians argued that border should follow the Columbia River which would take in parts of Washington State. Some Americans wanted the entire west coast.

The treaty in 1846 simply extended the existing western border along the 49th parallel.

Got spare money?

Recent evidence points to the fact that "Dawd" (later David) was in fact a local deity and not a person. Anyway, it's all in just barely historical times and the evidence for the existance of any persons let alone rulers is sketchy at best.

Increase Your PM Length

Good point, Snapcase. Apart from that, Dawd is a Muslim symbol figure in Central Asia as well, so Jews shouldn't count on him too much

Snapcase - if he was more of a godhood than a person, 2 questions occur to me:

1. Weren't local rulers in that time compared to deities anyway? It could be a misunderstanding...

2. If David was one god... then who was Goliath? At some point that legend must have had its beginning. Was Goliath possibly a god of a neighbour tribe? A god that had more power attributed to so the Dawd-fans created the story of the weak beating the strong?

I always love it when people come up with 'late evidence' if they just mean that a new person came with a new interpertation of the same information we already have for centuries.

I'd love to see the new evidence as well !

About the top 5....................
that's pretty hard for The Netherlands I think.

I would list :

1. Willem van Oranje
2. Thorbecke
3. Lubbers
4. Willem III
5. no blue

pherhaps other dutch can help me...........

For France I would said :

1) Francois 1er (enlighted)
2) Louis XIV (Strong King)
3) Napoleon (Strong Despot)
4) Charles de Gaules (WWII, France reconstruction, Beginning of European union ...)
5) François Mitterrand (...)

Lot of them, wasn't 'nice & kind' guys, but they were strong rulers.
