my posts all got lost when this thread split
I did not even know that the moderators had that power
basically I said that the posters were doing it out of meaness and that happens over here all the time and the moderators acted appropriately

The real question is, and this only the admins can answer, is making a joking comment about someone's sexual preferences a bannable offense? Only the owners of the site and forums can answer this one, and here, perhaps, we do see a cultural conflict between the USA and Europe. Here it is extremely common to joke about one's (or your own) sexual preferences. In the US people immediatly get offended, or think you are serious (when joking about yourself). It's a very touchy subject in a more conservative country like the USA. |
My view is that it depends on the poster the remark was directed to, the intent of the poster making the remark, and that poster's probably knowledge that the remark would be taken as an insult.
I don't really give a damn what people say about me - a while ago, Scipio Centaurus was trying to pull my chain to get banned, and people will say all sorts of things about me. I may respond back in kind, I may come back with something sarcastic, or ignore it, or whatever, but I'm thick-skinned enough to not really care.
As far as sexual preference, MWHC and I had a pretty funny insult fest going on about a year ago, in one of the times we got into each other's faces. It got into an Army-Navy thing, and we just laughed it off.
Other people are thinner skinned about that, or other subjects.
Whether it's bannable can't be reduced to an objective set of rules without allowing either way too much animosity and insults, or putting everyone into a straightjacket where you can't say anything that might vaguely be construed as offensive.
In PH's case, the intent to be insulting was clear and admitted, everyone who's been here 2-3 months knows that those type of remarks will set Giancarlo off, and it's been a repeated issue for months, from multiple posters, who generally encourage each other and get a big group laugh out of it.
One thing I personally have zero tolerance for is a group of people ganging up on one individual, so when that type of situation comes up, I will respond a lot more harshly.
Repeated insults are another thing - if PH had made the one remark, and left it at that, he wouldn't have been banned as long - but when it became a total threadjack, the attitude expressed (IMO) is "**** everyone else on the forum - me and my buddies want to have some fun at Giancarlo's expense, and we don't care about anyone else and why they're here." That disrespect to the other posters is also a part of the reason for the length of the penalty.

swell idea.
I'm just sorry my little joke went to far so I won't be candidate since i think i'm more rational and less prone to get emotinal than many other Israelis.
I'm also the only one besides eli that visits this day on an almost daily basis.
I remember Eli wanted to be a mod for some time.
Considering he's here usually more than ... many, he can do it well.
I think East Street trader would be a good choise, but he's rare in these counties now.
Sa far as the current decision goes, I think that the "awards" for Giann baiting have been handed out too late and to only one person.
There have been previous examples all week, by many people.

Chris62,
quote: You guys hit on exactly why a Brit mod is a bad idea, mainly because most of you brits can't tell what is offensive and what isn't. |
It's not good to be offended easily, like a lot of Americans are. Grow a thicker skin.
quote: This isn't a "pub", it's a world wide message board, and what you find inoffensive is irrelivant, it must be tailored to all. |
That's ridiculous. So if a fundy Christian finds it offensive that someone talks about taking drugs, that person should be banned for offending someone? You don't have the right not to be offended. Remember that, because it's something you and your fellow middle-aged Americans tend to forget.
quote: I hear stupid sh1t like "if you don't like it, don't read it", even though it breaks the rules here and always gets blitzed, most of you guys are just to irresoncible to handle what is right and what is wrong. |
You don't have the right not to be offended. Get over it and stop whinging.
quote: Quite frankly, most of the younger Brit posters (not all) lack both Class and tact, and thus, are totally unsuitable to moderate. |
You keep on saying this over and over, waiting for a response. Obviously British society is a lot different from American society. You're too fussy about hoping you haven't slightly offended someone in case they pull a lawsuit on you. We don't have that pressure and can say what we want so long as it's in the rules.
quote: I normally care not about who moderates, but your incessent whining for a Brit mod brings this out. |
So, we have two American mods, one Canadian and one American emigrant. Markos is too busy working on the site to moderate over immature middle-age Americans who love to whinge. So we're left with middle-aged Americans moderating a group of diverse posters from far afield.
They obviously can't understand how any other society works so go around handing out bannings left, right and centre.
quote: Provost is a perfect example, well educated, well liked, mid 20s, always pushing for moderation staus here, yet engaged in gay baiting a poster, |
What he was doing was a joke, and quite a funny one.
He should have been given a Post Count increase for his posts. yet you whinging middle-aged Americans get all riled up because he might have offended someone.
quote: This place doesn't need a moderator who thinks telling someone to choke on seamen is ok, if it's done in context of "jokes". Because you fail to see that, proves my point exactly. |
That people like you support the moderators show that they need to be deposed.
quote: You know as well as i, the Yanks rarely troll, that comes from the other side of the pond |
You see, people from over here just don't get wound up. If we see something that we could find annoying, we brush it off and say something back which winds you up more.
And you keep whinging about it because you can't take your own medicine.
quote: On this board, the only Brit posters who I would think could moderate East Street Trader and *end is forever*, and that is it. |
Well that's good because there are even fewer American posters who should be a Mod.
MtG is clearly too busy, Ming plays too much Civ3, and the rest of you are so hot-headed and easily offended that you'd be best wrapped in cotton wool and elft alone for a couple of years.
quote: but do you honestly believe someone like Spink could be fair an objective, when he spends half his time trying to break the rules "to see what he can get away with" attitude? |
I don't try to break rules at all. You obviously aren't paying attention.
Quite frankly, you're a disgrace to this board and should be banned for your last few posts as they are more incendiary than anything PH posted.
But of course you're a middle-aged conservative Americans and so the Mods love you.
PS - it's quite obvious Markos has little effect over moderating decisions any more as MtG is trying to stamp his authority. Once a Mod has made a decision (however crap it is), all the Mods stick behind him and kiss his arse.
Black Sunday shows this extremely well.

You don't have the right not to be offended by PH's well-deserved ban and the fact the rules aren't enforced to Stewart Spink's satisfaction. Or are we picking and choosing the subjects to be offended about.
quote: You don't have the right not to be offended. Get over it and stop whinging. |
Says the man whinging about the banning he finds offensive.
quote: We don't have that pressure and can say what we want so long as it's in the rules. |
Bingo, and it wasn't within the rules. Case closed!
quote: immature middle-age Americans who love to whinge. |
Says the biggest whinger on this site, who's only here because the people who he likes to whinge about the most allow him to post here despite that little "Stewart Spink" unpleasantness a while back.
quote: So we're left with middle-aged Americans moderating a group of diverse posters from far afield. |
As a general rule, we only moderate a bunch of childish spoiled brats. The vast majority of the "diverse posters from far afield" have the basic maturity and self-control to not need moderation. We only deal with those who can't handle the concept, or need occasional "education" to get their minds right.

Good luck with the revolution.

Which explains the protests from a vocal few over something as trivial as being able to post to one specific internet site for two weeks.

Of course not, you'd nevvvvvver do that...

Uh, dude, Markos makes whatever moderating decisions he wants, when he wants, where he wants. And my authority is clearly defined, and we're getting closer to the one year mark on the reign of tyranny, so there's nothing to stamp.
Thanks for that little bit of entertainment. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming...
