I want a new anthem for Greece too.
The one about liberty, freedom, mighty swords and proud vision and sacred hellenic bones is getting old.
I propose this:
Metal Command
your gathered here tonight
to heed our metal. cry
obeying all. our wills
all others you defy
a wall of sonic sound
with amps turned up to ten
our legions are advancing
to battle once again
fists are in the air. banging everywhere
thrashing to the sound faces melting down
it s time to fight for metal tonight
bangers take your stand and obey
our metal command
we go from town to town
and leave a trail of death
and if you don't surrender
you'll breathe you final breath
there will be no survivors
no prisoners of war
join our ranks or perish
we'll slice you to the core
fists are in the air thrashing everywhere
banging to the sound, faces melting down
it s time to fight for metal tonight
bangers take your stand and obey
our metal command
our legions show no mercy
the final hour nears
sonic blast deafening
it's ripping through your ears
there is no retribution
for those who do not dare
there's only execution
your dead without a prayer

I like the Russian Anthem, it's got a pretty good beat/speed to it. Both the Dutch and English anthems are dull, dull, dull.
I remember from the World Cup, that the Mexican anthem was pretty upbeat as well.

I still have the soviet anthem as my mobile ringing tone.
and the new words don't work anywhere near as well as the old ones.

Or, even better, download the song!
(BTW, I know thats Germany's Nat'l Anthem, not Russia, but its a thread on Nat'l Anthems, so...) |
You can get it off Audiogalaxy. First lines are "Deutschland, Deutschland, Uber alles, Uber alles in der Welt". And IIRC it was toned down a bit as well after WW2.

I think that some of the censored verses of present day anthems are quite amusing. It's rather embarrassing when social values change since the days of penning the lyrics to an anthem. (Which may explain why so many anthems are just instrumentally performed today, with no words.)
Take for example the omitted verses from anthems of two countries that pride themselves on racial diversity and libertarianism:
1.
O, thus be it ever when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes, and the war's desolation,
Blessed with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made, and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, if our reason is just,
And this be our motto "In God Is Our Trust".
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
2.
O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter thine enemies,
And make them fall:
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On thee our hopes we fix:
God save us all.
Can you guess which two nations these might be? I'm sure it's not too tricky
