	Russian National Anthem? Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

Hello, just a very very short question.

President Putin has reinstated the old national anthem for Russia, but obvious the lyrics have to be changed for the new nation. My question is, does anybody know if the revised lyrics have been released yet? Whenever I sing the old lyrics my Russian friends always give me funny looks.

Yes, the new lyrics have been available for some time; I can´t help thinking they sound a bit silly, though. (Perhaps they are not so bad in Russian.)

I don't know any of the words except for Oh Canada, so I just sing it like Ernest (warning, reference to Ernest Saves Christmas).

Ahhh, but I'm American. Noone expects us to know anything about anyone else's country. Just the fact that I know what Canada's National Anthem sounds like, plus know the first two words makes me an abberration.

I learned the Canadian anthem before I learned the American one.

Of course, I watched a LOT of Hockey Night In Canada back when I was a wee little thing... one of the greatest benefits of living near the border. Go CBC!

I know the first verse of the Australian National Anthem, and some of the second verse... That makes me above agerage for an Australian

Erk. I just looked at them and yes, Comrade Tribune, I think I'd probably have to agree with you. The song just doesn't seem to support such a "hug and share" attitude.

And unless I'm mistaken, in this song, Russia's gender appears to have changed from male to female... is this right? In the old version there's a line

"Mi vidim gryadutschee nashe strani" (verse 3 line 2)

(We see the future of our dearest land)

And in the new version it has different case endings

"Rossiya lyubimaya nasha strana" (verse 1 line 2)

(Russia our dearest land)

Am I missing something or has the nation gone from being a fatherland to a motherland?

(By the way this is not meant to be seen as an insult to Russia. I am well aware that Russia is larger than I am - 5'7" - and would in all likelihood kick my butt in a fight.)

I'm also an American and I also know the lyrics to the UK and Chinese national anthems! Freak.

I always loved the melody. That was the sojus something stuff, right ?

But I also have always loved one line in our anthem:

"Land of hammers" - thinking about industry. Just that "hammer" also got to mean "idiot" in the meantime, so we have "land of idiots" in our anthem, to be sung proudly at all inappropriate times...

Soviet anthem, a great piece of music. I think it is by far the best piece of music as a nat. anthem. Don't know about the lyrics though

'Oooo Canada'...? I thought it was 'Blame Canda, Blame Canada...'

"Strana"(country) is feminine in both cases. "nasha"("nashe") means "ours" when the word it talks about is feminine.

See, Russian has suffixes instead of saying "of"
So when you say "of out land" it's "Nashey Strani", and when you just say "our land" it's "Nasha Strana".

Thanks for clearing that up. Yes, the Russian (formerly Soviet) National Anthem really is a beautiful piece of music, but I still think the tune isn't really suited to the words in their latest incarnation. The tune reminds me of mountains and valleys and oceans, whereas the words remind me of a freshly baked and fragrant but by no means epic blueberry pie.

See? No relation. None whatsoever.

I want a new anthem for Greece too.

The one about liberty, freedom, mighty swords and proud vision and sacred hellenic bones is getting old.

I like the Russian Anthem, it's got a pretty good beat/speed to it. Both the Dutch and English anthems are dull, dull, dull.

I remember from the World Cup, that the Mexican anthem was pretty upbeat as well.

You can get it off Audiogalaxy. First lines are "Deutschland, Deutschland, Uber alles, Uber alles in der Welt". And IIRC it was toned down a bit as well after WW2.

Yeah, after re-unification (remember, there were two germanys, and the russian onw didn't get any slack), they brought back the old anthem but changed the words so that they don't have as much to do with nationalism. I guess in Germany, it's still looked down upon to take a lot of pride in the German State, but, I haven't been there to know.

I know it in English and French! Not out of choice.

It's really not that great of an anthem. The tune is bad, the words in English are meaningless, and the words in French are so Catholic.

The Russian anthem is great. The words were changed earlier by Khruschev: before 1953 they referred to Stalin, but afterwords, the anthem was "destalinized". So, in fact, there are 3 different sets of words to the anthem.

East germany: "Auferstanden aus Ruinen..."
West germany: Been the 3rd verse of the Deutschlandlied (1st one is the "über alles") since 1952. The 3rd verse is the liberal rather than the nationalist tradition: "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit..." (Unity, Justice and Liberty...)

Other parts may be a bit outdated or strange as well...

"Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang"

"German women, german trust,
german wine and german song..."

And the melody belongs to our KAISER!

I think that some of the censored verses of present day anthems are quite amusing. It's rather embarrassing when social values change since the days of penning the lyrics to an anthem. (Which may explain why so many anthems are just instrumentally performed today, with no words.)

Take for example the omitted verses from anthems of two countries that pride themselves on racial diversity and libertarianism:

1.

O, thus be it ever when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes, and the war's desolation,
Blessed with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made, and preserved us a nation.
