Yovarei here are some instructions to download this game. I'm new at this too, so this might not be the best way but it is the only way that I know. So here goes.
First you'll have to have WinZip and Real Download installed. Both are available as free trial version downloads.
Choose the Alternative Download link. Then select "Unzip". The file will download, takes a minute or two with a phone connection. Then a WinZip intro screen will apppear, read and then agree. Click "Next" on the next two screens. Then click on "Select Different Folder". In the Select Folder window, type the following: (C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Saves). Click "OK" and then "Unzip Now". The game should now be installed into your Civ3 save file and you'll be ready to play. Hope this works for you. Good luck.

This is, by far, the best map (very colorful too) I have ever played.
Born on a tiny island, I wanted to bless them (Germans), but they decided to fight instead... no luck, they did not subsist.
Then new friends up North (British & Babylon) willing to trade at
their advantage only. I took some British cities which reverted back very quickly. I razed them except London of course. The
Babylonians didn't like the War Elephants (great leader) and left
the continent.
Enough territory for cultural or space victory, so I thought !
But their culture was strong enough to react from distant cities.
No other choice but destruction of British and Babylonian.
The third continent was mine, exception made for 3 Chinese cities.
Not able to live with strangers, I attack the Chinese, but their
allies (Aztecs and Japan) responded well. In my whole civ life.
I never saw so many Frigates and Galleons along the coast line
of my 3 continents. My answer was a very costly alliance with Egypt. Very long world war...
With Tanks / Warships protecting the coast and Democracy,
I concentrated on research... with a Space Victory in 1946.

space race victory in 1997. After eliminating the germans with war elephants, I did not expand off of the island, building only 8 cities, my four plus 3 german cities. Near the end, I upgraded to 1.17, so no attachment. The new J command was very helpful in moving my crew of 8 workers to various pollution sites.

here's my submitted game for tournament 6...
a tad harder than tourney 5 but a better type of win... histographic really isn't that satisfying, isn't it?
finished off the germans before they even had the chance. fended off the english, then eventually destroyed them (but not before getting all their techs, kewl.) bit off a large chunk off the chinese empire then set my sights on the babylonians. destroyed the babs and then the chinese. figured that was enough then spent most of the time making sure that i had a tech lead over the other civs to ensure the win. built the UN but couldn't use it because all the other civs were pissed off at me...
had to hurry this one up because i really wanted to install the patch. i really like the stacked movement and the upgradable UUs.

BloodAxe,
What's the secret?
In my tournament 6 games the other civs all gang up on me! They never fight each other. They just keep coming at me non-stop.
Is it because of I am too weak, or my culture too low; or just because I am the human player?
Thanks,
Sulla

I'd been wondering what would happen to me if I actually played out a game with a lousy starting position, and this certainly qualifies. No food bonuses on the home island, no rivers for irrigation and for big cities in the pre-aqueduct era, jungle all around (and not even playing an industrious civ with fast-working workers), and a small land mass shared with a none-too-friendly neighbor.
Still, I managed to do a few things right, and while not all of my calculated risks worked as well as I might have liked, none blew up spectacularly. (I hate to think what would have happened if someone tried landing on my homeland in force while practically every unit I owned was fighting overseas; as it was, the tiny landings that were attempted a couple times were easily repulsed.) The end result was a space race victory in 1852. I may try to make a story out of the game later.
This is my first time trying to submit a tournament save, so I hope I'm doing it right. If I'm not, someone please let me know.

Domination in 1816 AD for 3491 points
The Germans declared war right off the bat but we settled for a peace agreement soon after. I cut off their expansion efforts and harrased their settlers for a while, limiting them to only three cities. Then in 730 BC we went at it, and in 490 BC they were conquered just as Colossus was built.
The next several years were spent building infrastructure and in preperation for the invasion of the lush English continent. In 290 AD the Great Lighthouse was built and I launched the assault, taking the Eastern most city on the continent the next turn and positioning the assault on London for the following turn. The English cities fell much easier than I had expected and by 440 AD I had taken all the cities on the continent, as well as all but two of their expasion cities to the East. They were willing to agree to peace for a pile of per turn gold, so I agreed, and set my gunsights on the Babylonian Empire.
The toops healed, reinforcements were in position and more were on their way; my Empire was ruled by a Monarchy and the Hanging Gardens had just been built, so I attacked the Babylonians in 560 AD. They put up a tough fight and I lost like three battles for every win. Finally in 900 AD after a long and gritty war I was victorious.
Sometime by the end of that century the Forbidan Palace was completed in London and the new terratory was doing well. With my Empire secure and off to a good start I considered a peacefull victory but the Chinese attempted to strongarm me for tech and we went to war in 1090. I thought the Bablylonian wars were bad, but they were a walk in the park compared to the Chinese. The Chinese had discovered Gunpowder but were only able to build a few Musketeer's before I cutoff their powder supply. It didn't appear to matter much as thier pike and spearmen decimated my war Elephant's just as easilly. In fact their warriors were doing a fine job of it as well. I'm not certain but I think I lost like 5 or 6 battles for every victory. It was heinous and my punching bag got a lot of use during that war. Finally in 1450 the Chinese were defeated. I was able to build Leonardo's, Corpenicus's, Magellen's, and most of Newton's in all that time. One saving grace of that long and exhausting war was the suprising production of the conquered cities.
I was still considering a peacefull victory at that point, but the Persians had a little over half as much culture as I did and so were a threat for the Culture Victory. I attacked them with Calvary in 1510. The Persian wars were anti-climatic after the difficulties with the Chinese. By the 1600's I had expelled them from their home continent and agreed to peace.
In 1555 the Greeks managed to lure one of my newly conquered Persian cities into their pathetic empire(I lost an Army) and then had the gall to advise me to move my troops or declare war. I conquered them in 1610. The Greek wars put into motion a Domination victory and I went after the Romans (1625-1655), the remaining Persians, and the Southern Aztec colonies. As I was finishing off the Persians (all but for a one tile island city) I built the Pentagon and loaded the extra unit into two Armies. Big mistake as my Galleon's could no longer transport them.
After securing a few Aztecs cities I agreed to peace as my chain of reinforcements were diminshing. Then for the next hundred years or so I beefed up my forces and rushed toward the tank tech. Then in 1758 the Eygptians declared war. I scarfed up their island colonies and struck their homeland in 1774. It was tough going since they had Calvary and were begining to build Rifleman. A short time into the war the Japanese (who were also eguipped with Calvary and Rifleman) surprised attacked me and almost took over my newly conquered island cities. If not for the assistance of the Aztecs(and the MPP and ROP I quickly signed) I would have lost those cities.
In any case, the Egyptians were conquered in 1808 and the Japanese in 1812, I rush built Temples in the captured cities, and after those cities culture expanded I finally achieved my first ever Domination victory.
Another enjoyable but long game, looking forward to tourny #7

Mogon - Very blood-thirsty game! Why didn't you just go for the conquest victory?
Carcajou - Interestingly enough you could have achieved a diplomatic win on the same turn with enough bribes.

My first ever tournament game, and only third attempt at 'monarch' level - yikes!
Attacked the germans early on with half a dozen archers, took all their (3?)cities bar one (some lucky attacks on my part I think...), then got several advances plus cash from them for peace. I left them the one city hoping to treat them as a vassal state, a few turns later they demanded cash off me (what??), I refused - they declared war - I destroyed them.
Sailed north, met babys and english, the former gifting me wish cash (without being threatened!), attacked the english, but didnt have enough forces to do the job properly, and had to sue for peace, having only taken two or three of their cities.
Major screwup on my part - started building pyramids in Delhi, idea being to switch to GL after, and I FORGOT to change production (nooooo.....), result = I build pyramids on a small island with about 6 cities - all of which have maxed out at size 6 already, no rivers or aquaducts (yet), or are hardly growing anyway due to all the jungle. Nice one Dave...
Rest of game was spent fighting just about everybody else at one time or another.

This is my first post on Apolyton, some may know my nickname from the Civfanatics board.
My tourney game is an endless war. I attack the Germans right off. I am used to seeing units on top of cities (preferences) so I got faked into believing the Germans had an undefended city. I could have lost the game right there if the Germans had built archers and came after me hard. As it was, I stationed a warrior on a mountain and the German archers tried to take him out, but could not. That was about the only moment of doubt in the entire game.
I built the capital on the dye icon, making it easy for me to claim the iron. I built swordsmen, and crush the Germans. Wait for mapmaking tech to get the English. The English sue for peace as my troops approach London, so I turn my troops against the Babylonians. I do not use pop rushing for my first army, but later in the game I use it all the time.
That brings up a big question: Have you guys decided what to do for the next game? Pop rushing with captured workers is a powerful technique in version 1.17f and is almost as good as old fashioned 1.16 pop rushing. The technique is to use a junk city with an entertainer, join workers, then pop them for units.
Back to my game, Babylon has zero chance, though they do get off a settler to a distant island. The 20 turns are way over on the English peace treaty and I bash them and they send off a lost settler as well. No matter, I am at war and am going to stay at war. I stay in Despotism the entire game to use pop rushing to create more units.
The Chinese are next. Then the Egyptians, and the Zulu. None of them have any chance against my mass of troops. I ally with the Romans because they look too weak to threaten me. They remain my allies for the rest of the game, never backstabbing me. The last war is against Japan and Domination comes in 1806. Score about 4000, could have milked it for much more, but I find milking a game for points to be tedious and boring.

The unbreakable spearman
I'm not finished with the game. Probably tomorrow.
But look at this.
Sometimes I just wonder if the AI does not cheat…
890 AD, here I am right in front of Babylon, Capital of the Babylonian Empire, with 13 veteran or elite units ready to fight. 5 Babylonians archers and spearmen have just left the Capital city.
They apparently went for Ur where some smaller fighting is going on.
They Left alone to defend their main city one single regular spearman.
This single spearman will defeat :
·One vet horsemen
·A second vet horseman
·My swordsman army of strength 13 (one elite and 2 veteran swordsman)
·A vet swordsman (and got promoted to veteran)
·A second vet swordsman (end go promoted to elite)
·And will finally be defeated by an Elite swordsman…
I replayed from autosave and same thing happened.
So you can try it, too : it’s just amazing !

How is it possible to tell how much culture other civs have? Has it been posted somewhere what the descriptions ('impressed', 'admirers' etc) mean?

I finally figured out how login in and post. I achieved my first diplomatic victory in 1886 with 2446 points. My goal was a culture or space victory, but somewhere along the way I made friends with almost everyone. Built the Colossus in the capital early shortly after expanding to the continent to the northeast. England declared war and Gemany followed just before completion. One of them brought the Greeks into the conflict. I had already aborbed Leipzig due to culture.
The Colossus triggered my Golden age. I lost one City on the northeastern continent to the English, then trounced the Germans and English with swordsman. I accepted peace with the Greeks with no battles. I left the English with 3 or 4 cities and the Germans with 1 or 2.
I built the forbidden palace in Oxford on the northeastern continent without a leader. During this long peaceful interlude I colonized the continent south of the main Japanese land and secured spices and wine by out culturing the Japanese.
In the late middle ages I made deals with most of the other civs giving them tech for money. I was receiving between 500 and 1000 gold per turn. This made it easy to rush build and pay cash.
In the late industrial age/early modern I agree to some mutual protection agreements with the English, Romans, and Germans and waited for a war. Both the Romans and Germans were at war with Japan prior to the mutual protection agreements. I airlifted my army to the shared continent and proceeded to kick butt.
I sued for peace when the continent was secured, but one city promptly revolted. Then I just coasted to the end.
I'll attach the file later after I get it off my other machine and zip it.

My long story seems to have disappeared after I sent it.
Here is the short one:
I had decided to aim at diplomatic victory and built the UN in 1786, but could never get a majority. I gifted techs and gold and tried to be nice to anyone: no way; until I finally built a SS under far from optimal conditions and launched it in 1898.
Has anyone studied the Diplomatic Victory and could give advice about how to buy votes?

IMO it would be very interesting for us all if you gave some more details. If you achieve world domination five centuries sooner than anyone else, we sure have a lot to learn from you.
