Ah! There's the problem right there. (a) Fairly standard guitar- all good music is original and interesting. Pink Floyd is so... Formulaic. Pompous, but formulaeic. (b) Awful production. There is a reason the greatest producer in history, Phil Spector, worked purely in Mono- Stereo practically invites frivolous pretentious "artiness".

Welcome my son, welcome to the machine. The lyrics: perhaps they're not what you like? Well, I can't understand that either. You've been in the pipeline filling oyur time... The lyrics coupled with the style of singing really bemoan the slippage into the corporate structure, the proverbial selling out. How is that different from any other song that bemoands "selling out"?

It was mainstream youth culture opinion at the time. The real "rebels" of that age were people like Jonathan Richman who embraced modern society...

Elaboration is another factor I hate in music. All the best and most challenging music is achingly simple.

Why does it make a difference what is was at the time? Can't you just listen to the damn notes, or is the sociological context absolutely crucial?

For me it depends on the mood. And I also find it repetitive after a while (if not in the right mood).

Although there can be genious in 3 chords sure

I think attitude influences music conciously and subconciously. The damn notes are there because someone had the desire to place them there for some reason, and one of the wonders of music is that the attitude of the writer at the time is often acutely reflected in the music itself.

I don't want to denigrate simplicity either - right now I'm listening to a Sun Records compilation, and really rather liking it.

But I wouldn't say music has to be simple. And I would say a Beethoven slow movement goes to places that Carl Perkins (or whoever - just using that example cos he's on right now...) would be utterly incapable of exploring. But Beethoven would bomb at Glastonbury...

"all good music is original and interesting"

So basically I'm gathering that you like simple music that is original and interesting. Let me turn you on, then, to one of my absolute favorites... Phillip Glass. His cd "The Pohotographer" being his pinnacle work.

Baroque music - you can't listen to it longer than 5 minutes, after that you fall asleep (or do the dishes or something like that)

Classical music - Tatatataaaaa. Heard a billion zillion times. Like "Yesterday"

Romantic music. Sounds like a generic Hollywood soundtrack. Maybe it was genuine 150 years ago, but today?

Take Bach's "Art of the Fugue" for example. It's the same stuff over and over, I bet the people who say it's one of their favourite works can't tell which fugue is which.

So I guess it's all for the snobs to show their impressive education.

SNOB.. HA..HA HA I laugh at you. I am a 5 year concert Violist. I grew up on this stuff. I love the music..the melodies that float about your brain when you close your eyes and absorb it in..the different instruments that are used for different moods. Classical music is beautiful and very meaningful. I am as far as you can get from being a snob..and yet I love this kind of music..it realeases my tensions and puts me at ease.... And that's just my opinion!!

Just like rock music is for angry teenagers right? There's nothing snobby about classical music itself. The lifestyles of some of the people that like it, well that might be a different story.

Listening to only one type of music is boring. Expand your horizons and grow up a bit. When you're older, you might even like classical. I don't listen to it much, but I like it once and awhile in traffic. Keeps the head level. Much more than some angry 20 year old screaming about killing angels or some **** like that.

i didnt read all 3 pages of this **** cos it seems pointless, but, i listen to Baroque, i love it, i luve bach. Its not all the same, have you ever taken the time to listen to it?

if you want music that is all the same then Rock music is it, all pentatonic or power chords. thats it. I like it though....

If you dont like something fine, but it doesnt mean that people who do are snobs. I play rock gutar, but since i took up classical i have improved imensly, but a few people i know thing that classical is for idiots, geeks what ever.

People like Bach and Beethoven had an ability to make beutiful harmonies, and sounds. I never heard Slipknot or N'SYNC do that, could some on today wright some thing like beethovens 9th?

even modern day classical music is **** compared to the odler stuff (for sdome reason, the spoons is now a master piece).

But to say this music is for snobs and this is for cool people, its just rong.

You see, Bodna, it's very simple:

1. Snapcase likes White Stripes.
2. Snapcase only likes dangerous, subversive and rebellious music.
3. Therefore, The White Stripes are dangerous, subversive and rebellious.

Snapcase's insistence of only counting music that fits in his surprisingly stretchable concept of rebelliousness as rock music, which has led him to consider rap music rock but prog rock as not-rock somehow reminds me of people rating Christian rock according to how many times the word "Jesus" is used.

"24 mentions of Our Lord and Savior. Excellent."

"10 mentions of Our Lord and Savior. Good, good."

"ONLY 3 MENTIONS OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR! THIS MUST BE SATANIC SECULAR MUSIC!"

The extra benefit is that you don't even have to listen to the music!

Rebellious? Subversive? Dangerous?

It's all relative.

Rameau's work was considered so rebellious that it split the 18th century French music world into two violently warring factions. If you listen to a lot of what preceeded it (Lully et al), it is sometimes jarring ... yet so wonderful!

We take so much for granted now. Much of our contemporary musical conventions (such as A=440, the scales, etc) were at one time rebellious or controversial.

But of course you'd never know that if you just listen to Radiohead or whatever all day.

Today I listened to Telemann and Sonic Youth and loved them both!

Most people do not select music for it's political beliefs, they select it because their own personal tastes find it pleasing.
