The US Pledge of Allegiance. Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I thought God Save the Queen was outdated and over-the-top

Do kids still have to swear this every day in school?

They don't have to stand up, but in all my years of school, I don't remember a teacher that would really let them stay seated, or any student that did stay seated.

I used to have to recite the pledge allegiance to the US flag when I was at school.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Wow, I still remember it.

My daughter never had to in her schools - nobody she knows (in Cali or in other states) have either.

I remember doing it in Texas as a kid, way back, but even in a lot of schools I went to (30 years ago give or take) we never bothered with it.

I remember doing it in my younger days, but I can't remember a single time after 4th grade or so.

Interestingly, "under God" was thrown into the Pledge during the '50s, 1954 if I remember correctly. Around the same time "In God We Trust" was put on our paper money. You know, in order to smoke out those godless commies.

Someone I know (who's British) was forced - with the rest of the group to sing the anthem and pledge allegance when visiting the US and going to school. At first the pupils refused, singing 'rule Britannia', but they had to in the end.

I don't recall anyone ever refusing to pledge allegiance in all my years of public school. I certainly never did.

Of course, this nonsense stopped before high school. Perhaps even before junior high.

I never had to. Considering the fact that I go to school in one of the most conservative states in the US, I'll hazard a guess that few if any schools still require it.

PS What's the point of this thread?

of course I shouldn't talk... I still remember the «morning prayer» (not obligatory - you could just stand there and do nothing - all the toughies - "anarchists"did nothing)

I think there was an effort to get the morning prayrer abolished now that I think of it...
The church was banging its head against the wall for it not to happen...

don't know for sure if morning prayer still exists

It's not just the US either... when I was in Primary school in Oz, we all had to stand in assembly every Friday morning and sing the national anthem "Advance Australia Fair"! Not that ANYone knew the words! Why it couldn't have been the infinitely cooler "Waltzing Matilda" I have NO idea.

I'm sure anthems are cleverly crafted to be nauseating.

Are there any catchy ones?

And none of "God Save the Queen", "Rule Britannia" or "The Star-Spangled Banner" are.

In Oklahoma, we said the Pledge on Mondays until the 5th grade. I don't know if they still do it, or whether it's just common to stop saying it when we enter middle school. I also had Apple IIC's in a high school I transferred out of in 1994, so I don't know if we were just a dated school district.

By the way, did anyone ever play "Oregon Trail" on the Apple IIC? I remember that game was soooo cool.

They have it on the anouncements every morning at the start of school. Some teachers make you actually stand some dont, but you dont have to say it.
i try not to stand for it though, im way too tired at 740 in the morning to do anything.

and i never played Oregon Trail for the apple, but i did for the Performa. That was THE game to play in elementary school, right above Number Munchers

Azerbaijan's anthem is pretty good. Bhutan's isn't half bad either.

I played Oregon Trail on the Apple, also. I have a few of the PC versions too.

Put an end to popups!

For most of my primary school, we did the pledge plus the Our Father (prot version, but us Catholics shut up at the appropriate time). And that was a public school.

High school was the pledge, Our Father, and Hail Mary (IIRC). Catholic school.

Rural Ohio.
