Overrated hardly equals bad

I have all their albums and as much as I love Zeppelin, I often think many people overrate them as well. In fact, most popular bands are given a bit too much credit. There isn't an artist out there who hasnt done atleast a few really bad songs in their day, so dubbing anyone as a rock god doesnt usually satisfy me

I second that! Robert Smith, get a haircut for ****s sake Oh and talking about Smith, The Smiths!! OK, I know Morissey is a god to some, but really... The rest of the brit-pop genre is pretty awful as well, apart from Radiohead which I adore I never quite understood Thin Lizzy or Blue Öyster Cult either, or Emerson, Lake and Palmer or Yes (yikes! )

I donīt know if itīs a established fact that you donīt buy any new music after you turn 30, but itīs definetly the case for me. I just stock up on old music which I had on vinyl and/or groups I already listened to 10 or so years ago... Iīve even started to buy "Best of the 80īs hits" type of records

I still think one the best records of all time is "Dark side of the moon" and Maidenīs "Live after death", after 1990 thereīs not much happening in the music scene as far as Iīm concerned...

Edit: I must say that I enjoy both (the early) U2 and REM (at least up to "Automatic for the people"). Wonder why no one else does?

Blue Oyster Cult is certainly an acquired taste......but their contribution to whats known as heavy metal (in the early 70's), was quite important and influencial

I hear a lot of people crap on yes, but I like them alot....(Same people that don't like yes, usually don't like groups like the moody blues either am i right??)

Lots of suggestions I agree with, and lots of suggestions I don't agree with...
I'll just throw in another few names, although I'm quite sure not all of them are really liked by anyone around here anyway:

Guns 'n' Roses
Meatloaf
Alanis Morisette (after "Jagged Little Pill")

Tired of ads?

The Dave Mathews band - I dont get it. I just dont get it . Over-produced and musically way too busy.

The Grateful Dead- people used to follow these guys around the country. Why? Jerry Garcia always sang out of tune.

GNR is still one of the shining spots of r and r in the 80s and early 90s imo. However moot this might be

Grateful Dead has dozens of good songs. Whether or not I would ever associate with their hardcore fans..well thats another story

kamrat, while an innocent enough question, the answer is a resounding no. It has nothing to do with it. I'm a big fan of Queen, still listen to George Micheals faith album. Have a few good culture club tunes on cd. Like a lot of Prince tunes from the 80's (even though he's not gay he certainly gets labeled that way). Same goes for Micheal Jackson.

Now seriously, what homophobic fellow would admit to enjoying such music?

APPARENTLY...

And KX: You are LAME..LAME ..LAME...

The Cure is awesome:

Plainsong

"I think it's dark and it looks like rain"
You said
"And the wind is blowing like it's the end of the world"
You said
"And it's so cold
It's like the cold if you were dead"
And then you smiled
For a second

"I think I'm old and I'm feeling pain"
You said
"And it's all running out like it's the end of the world"
You said
"And it's so cold it's like the cold if you were dead"
And then you smiled
For a second

Sometimes you make me feel
Like I'm living at the edge of the world
Like I'm living at the edge of the world
"It's just the way I smile"
You said

Bows head in Awe......How lovely is that!

See now I'll happy argue with you on that kamrat. Morrison wasnt a great poet. He was an alcoholic loony tripping on acid. Most of his stuff makes little to no sense and certainly isn't "deep".

I have most of the doors albums and like a lot of tunes, but damn, they had a lot of stink bombs too.

Lets have an interesting study...on side 1 we'll have bw post the best lyrics from a cure song and kamrat you can post the most interesting and deep lyrics from the doors...

Then we'll have a little contrast and compare...what do yall say

EDIT: Looks like bw beat me to the idea!!!

Okay.... but The Cure has a lot of good songs..here's another good song off the same album... Read it and stand in AWE...

This is how bitter love really is..and alot of the times it does end this way...But being human how can we resist...

Disintegration

Oh I miss the kiss of treachery
The shameless kiss of vanity
The soft and the black and the velvety
Up tight against the side of me
And mouth and eyes and heart all bleed
And run in thickening streams of greed
As bit by bit it starts the need
To just let go
My party piece

Oh I miss the kiss of treachery
The aching kiss before I feed
The stench of a love for a younger meat
And the sound that it makes
When it cuts in deep
The holding up on bended knees
The addiction of duplicities
As bit by bit it starts the need
To just let go
My party piece

But I never said I would stay to the end
So I leave you with babies and hoping for frequency
Screaming like this in the hope of the secrecy
Screaming me over and over and over
I leave you with photographs
Pictures of trickery
Stains on the carpet and
Stains on the scenery
Songs about happiness murmured in dreams
When we both us knew
How the ending would be...

So it's all come back round to breaking apart again
Breaking apart like I'm made up of glass again
Making it up behind my back again
Holding my breath for the fear of sleep again
Holding it up behind my head again
Cut in deep to the heart of the bone again
Round and round and round
And it's coming apart again
Over and over and over

Now that I know that I'm breaking to pieces
I'll pull out my heart
And I'll feed it to anyone
Crying for sympathy
Crocodiles cry for the love of the crowd
And the three cheers from everyone
Dropping through sky
Through the glass of the roof
Through the roof of your mouth
Through the mouth of your eye
Through the eye of the needle
It's easier for me to get closer to heaven
Than ever feel whole again

I never said I would stay to the end
I knew I would leave you with babies and everything
Screaming like this in the hole of sincerity
Screaming me over and over and over
I leave you with photographs
Pictures of trickery
Stains on the carpet and
Stains on the memory
Songs about happiness murmured in dreams
When we both of us knew
How the end always is

How the end always is...

Waiting for the Night - Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode)

I'm waiting for the night to fall
I know that it will save us all
When everything's dark
Keeps us from the stark reality

I'm waiting for the night to fall
When everything is bearable
And there in the still
All that you feel is tranquillity

There is a star in the sky
Guiding my way with its light
And in the glow of the moon
Know my deliverance will come soon

I'm waiting for the night to fall
I know that it will save us all
When everything's dark
Keeps us from the stark reality

I'm waiting for the night to fall
When everything is bearable
And there in the still
All that you feel is tranquillity

There is a sound in the calm
Someone is coming to harm
I press my hands to my ears
It's easier here just to forget fear

And when I squinted
The world seemed rose-tinted
And angels appeared to descend
To my surprise
With half-closed eyes
Things looked even better
Than when they were open

Been waiting for the night to fall
I knew that it would save us all
Now everything's dark
Keeps us from the stark reality

Been waiting for the night to fall
Now everything is bearable
And here in the still
All that you feel is tranquility

You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk - Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys)

What a performance tonight
Should I react or turn off the light
Looks like you're picking a fight
In a blurring of wrong and right
But how your mood chances
You're a devil, now an angel
Suddenly subtle and solemn
And silent as a monk

You only tell me you love me
When You're drunk

It's better than nothing I suppose
Some doors have openend
Others closed
But I couldn't see you exposes
To the horrors behind some of those
Somebody said listen don't you know
What you're missing
You should be kissing him instead of
dissing him like a punk

But you only tell me you love me
When You're drunk
You only tell me you love me
When You're drunk

All of my friends
Keep asking me why, oh why
Do you not say goodbye
If you don't even try you'll be sunk

'Cause you only tell me you love me
When you're drunk

What's the meaning
When you speak with so much feeling
Is it over when you're sober
Is it junk

You only tell me you love me
When you're drunk
You only tell me you love me
When You're drunk

THE END - Jim Morrisson (The Doors)

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes...again

Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...stranger's hand
In a...desperate land

Lost in a Roman...wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah

There's danger on the edge of town
Ride the King's highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby

Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake...he's old, and his skin is cold

The west is the best
The west is the best
Get here, and we'll do the rest

The blue bus is callin' us
The blue bus is callin' us
Driver, where you taken' us

The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and...then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door...and he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother...I want to...**** you

C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin' a blue rock
On a blue bus
Doin' a blue rock
C'mon, yeah

Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

It hurts to set you free
But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die

This is the end
----------

I could go on all night...

KX: OF DP that is MY FAV song....

THE CURE RULESSSSS

To Wish Impossible Things

Remember how it used to be
When the sun would fill the sky
Remember how we used to feel
Those days would never end
Those days would never end

Remember how it used to be
When the stars would fill the sky
Remember how we used to dream
Those nights would never end
Those nights would never end

It was the sweetness of your skin
It was the hope of all we might have been
That filled me with the hope to wish
Impossible things
To wish impossible things

But now the sun shines cold
And all the sky is grey
The stars are dimmed by clouds and tears
And all I wish
Is gone away
All I wish
Is gone away

All I wish
Is gone away

Put an end to popups!

terrible lie - Trent Reznor (NIN)

hey God, why are you doing this to me?
am i not living up to what i'm supposed to be?
why am i seething with this animosity?
hey God, i think you owe me a great big apology

terrible lie
terrible lie
terrible lie
terrible lie

hey God, i really don't know what you mean
seems like salvation comes only in our dreams
i feel my hatred grow all the more extreme
hey God, can this world really be as sad as it seems

terrible lie
terrible lie
terrible lie
terrible lie

don't take it away from me
i need you to hold on to
don't take it away from me
i need you to hold on to
don't take it away from me
i need you to hold on to
don't take it away from me
i need someone to hold on to
don't tear it away from me
i need you to hold on to
don't tear it away from me
i need someone to hold on to
don't tear it away from me
i need you to hold on to
don't tear it
don't tear it
don't take it
don't take it
don't

hey God, there's nothing left for me to hide
i lost my ignorance, security and pride
i'm all alone in a world you must despise
hey God, i believed your promises, your promises and lies

terrible lie
terrible lie
terrible lie
terrible lie

(terrible lie)
you made me throw it all away
my morals left to decay (terrible lie)
how many you betray
you've taken everything (terrible lie)
my head is filled with disease
my skin is begging you please (terrible lie)
i'm on my hands and knees
i want so much to believe

i give you everything

Speaking of "gay" bands I like Kamrat, there are several PSB tunes that I particularly like.

Violator by Depeche Mode is excellent all around.....

After looking at both the cure and doors lyrics ive realized that I probably am not very good at casting judgement, on which song might be better written. That being said, the cure song does seem to have a little more order. The End is a nice mellow song, but I certainly wouldn't put the lyrics into any great category
