Good choice on the article - no info.
That jet was shot down by a US Navy cruiser, in what was a war zone.

Serb, I couldn't understand that last paragraph, about the long range maneuvers of you air fleet, could you please be more specific. |
I've talked about the last large, fullscale maneuvers (training) of our long range aviation which happent about two years ago. Btw, the previous maneuvers of our long range aviation were proposed to be at September of last year, but after Sept 11, and all this panic, our generals decided not to launch a "training attack" of USA territory.
quote: The X-80, which flew in 1980, was the first with forward swept wings. And yes, it was deemed unfeasible at the time, because there was no such thing as digital flight control. A forward swept wing is inherantly unstable. At the time, it was almost impossible to create an AFCS that could control it, and expensive. That's why we didn't make more than one. Now, I'm pretty sure that we could do it. |
Then how some of you can claims that we steal our fighter from you, if you are just pretty sure that you could do it while don't have it.
quote: As for the 25, you continue to just say speed. Until the MiG-25 came, the F-106 Suber Sabre was the king of speed. THat only problem was that it had a large turning radius. I believe that the 25 suffers from the same problem. Also, please explain to me how a Mach 2.5 (and I am being generous) fighter can outrun a Mach 4 missile that can turn faster and harder. |
So, you are agreed or not that speed is very important for interceptor? the goals of interceptor as I see it- is to hunt, to chase and finaly to shoot down an enemy aircrafts. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that speed is very important for this. I've never said that Mig-25 can outrun a missile, I've just wanted to said that it is better to try to outrun the missile while flying on the fastest fighter of the world, then trying to do so while flying on more slower plane.
quote: You say that the 47 was made by the order of the Defense Ministry? Ok, fine, so it was. My question remains. How is a military that cannot pay its power bill able to afford a squadron, much less a force of high technology fighters. |
After SU remains a huge number of old weaponry. And now our army as not efficient how we need it. It's still to big, the Cold war is over we don't need to waste money on huge army. The goal of our military reform is to create a less numbered, but more efficient army equiped with less number but more superior weapons. This for creation of fighter of fifth generation was started by order of Defense Ministry.
quote: As for the last line, truthfully, do you believe that if the US and Russia got into a war, the Russian Air Force would not get beaten? |
Of course I believe, we are not an Yugoslavia or Iraq will strike you back. Also, I believe that in case of war between our countries everybody will be dead on this planet.

It was in times of Cold war, do you think that USAF could react in different manner on such events? I suppose the events of Sept 11 proved that Boeing could be a deadly weapon. And I'm not kidding when I'm saying so. If your air forces at Sept 11 reacted in the same way as Russians done in 80s, then you avoided this disaster. And btw, as I've heard the fourth plane wich crushed in Pensilvania was shoot down by US air forces. And btw, did your president did not ordered to shoot down ANY civilian plane wich is out of proper rute, after those events?
And one more thing, what do you think about US submarines? Not so long ago American submarine sinked a Japan training ship, many people died then. Is it disqualify US Navy as professionals?

Now I like news like this and I am appreciative of things America has done for Greece - always for its own interests but still, give credit where credit is due.
I am not a blind anti-american. But respect for other countries and a no-**** you all attitude and not trying to prove anything can get you far further than just attacking anyone in sight. Don't verify other people's conceptions or misconceptions.
Bush Marks Greek Independence Day

"Greece and America have been firm allies in the great struggles for liberty," Bush said. "As the 21st century dawns, Greece and America are once again standing united; this time in the fight against terrorism."
Meeting with Greek diplomats and leaders in the Old Executive Office Building next to the White House, Bush expressed U.S. appreciation for access to the Souda Bay military base in Crete and Greece's contribution of a naval frigate for patrolling the Arabian Sea.
"America and Greece are strong allies and we're strategic partners," Bush said. "Our nation has been inspired by Greek ideas and enriched by Greek immigrants."
The ceremony marked the anniversary of the 1821 revolution in which Greeks regained their freedom and declared independence after 400 years of domination by the Ottoman Empire.

Serb,
regarding Russian air superiority I think you exaggerate a bit.
I might not be an expert on aircrafts but I used to read a lot about military weaponry in the past. I have read some articles on the issue and as far as I know the American aircrafts were better than the Soviet\Russian's. That doesn't mean that your aircrafts were crap as some here have claimed. Soviet aircrafts designed during the 70s and 80s were very good and NATO were always greatly worried of the results of a possible conflict between the two airforces. The examples of conflicts between US made and Soviet made aircrafts in the Middle East are too poor to make conclusions. Syrian and Iraqi pilots were infefior than their opponents. Even if they had flew the same aircafts as the Israeli or NATO pilots had the results would have been more or less the same.
Regarding Soviets steeling technology from the West it is a well known story. It is not propaganda, it is a fact. Soviets did stolen lot of Western technology. KGB was a very capable secret service, the best during the Cold War and made the Western secret services feeling pretty fool of themselves lot of times.
However many things Soviets have accomplished are their design and in some areas surpass the Westerns.

Both happened in 1991 but a year has 12 months, 54 weeks, 365 days |
Let's see, Soviet Union felt at December 12 of 1991, I guess that he have two weeks then.

Exactly. And btw, some of those pilots were fiying on planes of a Western design.

The same CIA done and still doing, that's why intellegences are need for. The thing that KGB worked better makes only a honor to our intellegence. However some people think that we steal everything from West, while those people deny that the West steal from us too. This is silly as I see it.
