"It comes from a very ancient democracy, you see ..."
"From a world of lizards?"
"No," said Ford, "nothing so simple. Nothing anything like so straightforward. On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford. "It is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford. "They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates to the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards?"
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in."

Politicians are w@nkers. And we are even more w@nkers since we vote for them.

US needs to get rid of it's two party system, and replace it with a real democracy, like an (atleast) eight party system.
Nothing gets done or is agreed, and therefore no harm is done. Unless something really important comes up. Like a sex scandal.
All the corruption money would have to be distributed to several parties, and I guess that would make the industries participation in politics little. No more steel indu. tariffs! No more missile tests!
[all of this is a load of Bullspit] |
no

quote: In Athens, protests and marches are the curse of the drivers.
They block the roads (which are already too congested to begin with) and everyone is stuck in traffic for hours).
Now the police diverts the traffic but it can't help the situatuion a lot.
You can see a lot of exasparated drivers when there are marches and there a lot of them. It's like a tradition
And the fookibng thing of all of this is that even a small group of people (say 100) WILL block the road too.
It's like a Greek tradition...
Very problematic.
The communist party is very small but very, VERY active it blockes the roads all the time. And plenty of other people of the so called "out of the parliement" left wing. They block the roads for anything to protest against whatever you can imagine.
I say yes to protest but, folks, let's try to keep the roads open huh? some people are trying to get to their fooking jobs allright? |
Been there, done that.
I have been in many demos blocking the streets for hours. Let me tell you that the police is keeping the streets blocked in a much larger area and for a much longer time than necessary.
I have participated in a 100 man march in Stadiou. We have had traffic in fromt of us and traffic behind us. Traffic wouldn't have gone anywhere that time of the day.
There is always a very good reason behind any demonstration, but the everyday driver is a so selfish person, that he only cares about having a free road ahead of him. 1000 people on foot, struggling united to promote their cause, have a much higher moral right to be there than the 1000 drivers, each going his own way for his own purposes, who are blocked. Having a car does not make you lord of the streets; a pedestrian has always priority before you.
You should be glad that you still have the right to protest on the streets. This right is threatened by various pieces of legislation. This right is suppressed during every major summit and will be suppressed during the Olympics.

It's a democracy in the sense that we are free.
But we do not get to elect a leader. We are given a choice between two rich white men who both follow their party's agenda.
There is a difference between a dictatorship and our system of government. In a dictatorship, there is one ruler.
In this democracy, we have three branches of two kinds of dictators: republican and democrat.

Bullsh!t.
There is not always a good reason and I will be the one who will judge if such a reason exists, not the demonstrators. (I and others - the Citizens - not a group of 100 people).
1000 drivers going to work are what keeps this country going as well. Actually that's what keeps this country going.
These are remains of the dictatorship. That's why there is tolerance for people of no significant "weight" blocking the streets.
Demonstrate, I have too, but learn to respect the other.
And if you don't, the police will make sure you do.
I hope you will not cry "police state" now
Besides blocking the streets does not "further your cause". It just pisses people of.

It is called reality.
