In case our Israeli friends are getting antsy over Bush: Got spare money?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Newsweek: Bush Administration Deeply Divided Over Powell Mission to Mideast; U.S. Diplomat in Mideast Says White House 'Not Very Committed' to Getting Israelis, Palestinians Back into Serious Discussions

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Story Filed: Sunday, April 07, 2002 11:20 AM EST

NEW YORK, Apr 7, 2002 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Despite the apparent victory of Secretary of State Colin Powell's State Department in prodding a reluctant president to commit himself to greater Mideast engagement, it's not clear how much support the mission has back at the White House, Newsweek reports. Sources tell Newsweek in the April 15 issue (on newsstands Monday, April 8), that the administration is deeply divided between hard-liners, like Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, who'd like to see Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon given a free hand, and senior officials at the State Department, who've argued the president's leadership is on the line unless he tries to resolve the conflict.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20020407/NYSU001 )

Washington Bureau Chief Daniel Klaidman and Senior Editor Michael Hirsh report that President George W. Bush's visceral instincts about the conflict may pull him back into the hard-line camp and undercut Powell. Despite his shift, Bush remains leery of negotiating at all with Palestinian Chairman Yasir Arafat and has instead identified with Sharon's struggle. Indeed, an administration official says that Bush believes Arafat "wants to be remembered as a freedom fighter, not a peacemaker."

That kind of tough talk works to appease Bush's conservative base, many of whom are angry over his decision to restrain Sharon. Just as important, it pleases the politically influential U.S. Jewish community, whose support could deliver Florida to Bush in 2004 -- decisively this time. Indeed, because of the need to address many different constituencies, the president's speech went through 17 drafts, and much of the dickering was over just how tough to be on Arafat. Karl Rove, Bush's principal political advisor, helped craft the language he thought was necessary to reassure Israel supporters: namely, that "Arafat created this problem." Sources said that in order to achieve balance in the speech, Powell insisted on a qualifier: that the problem was "largely" of Arafat's making. One senior administration official says there was real tension between Bush and Powell over the issue. He says hawks pushed for a bold proposal -- abandon Arafat as a negotiating partner, while at the same time putting forward a U.S. outline of a final settlement and demanding that both sides respond to it. He says this was rejected. "They backed off. It was thought too hard. Now we are stuck with going there and temporizing."

The decision to send Powell to the region came only as protests in the Arab world began to threaten U.S. allies like Egypt and Jordan, Newsweek reports. "What really scared [the Bush administration] was that the anger was shifting from the obvious target, Israel, to the United States and to the Arab regimes and Arab rulers," says a longtime U.S. diplomat in the region. "The anger wasn't just from the usual complainers." It came from officials close to Jordan's King Abdullah and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. When asked how deeply committed the administration is in getting serious peace talks started, the U.S. diplomat said "I fear the U.S. is not very committed. When you have other fish to fry, like Iraq, and other priorities, like the war on terror, it's a problem."

Israel to withdraw from Tul Karem and Kalkilya in the next hours

The two cities were quiet after their occupation and Israel decided to withdraw because of the American pressure.

Now Israel can say they're being reasonable and Bush can say he's not being ignored; the tanks can roll on to hotter trouble spots.

I don't see a problem.

When Powel arrived in Morroco they asked him, "why aren't you going straight to Jerulalem?"

If he went straight to Jerusalem, there would be real pressure for Israel to stop.

Powel is not going straight to Jerusalem.

Eleven Israeli soldiers were killed this morning. 9 in Jenin, 2 in Nablus

In Jenin it was a planned ambush.

Remind me again why we cant just bomb the ****ing camp instead of sending troops there? What kind of Nazis are we, trying to spare enemy lives.

Only Tul Karem and Kalkilya. Forces were also withdrawn from the Yete(Yeta?) village.

Details about the event in Jenin :
And IDF team was led to an ambush in one of the tiny alleys and then numerous bombs were activated and fire was opened on the team from a number of sources.

It is unclear who the killed soldiers were. The fact that 10 were killed in Jenin is not yet reported in the media at all. According to some reports they were regular reservists, but according to others they were from "an elite unit"(read:the Sayeret).

Concerning the event in Jenin :
There might have been another event(possibly suicide bomber) with 5+ killed, and there is a suspicion that few soldiers were kidnapped.

The official media says nothing about what happened there except "fierce battles" and the rumors are spreading like wildfire.
According to the Falafel seller there are 17 Shayetet Thirteen(the Israeli paralel to the Navy SEAL) losses, the neighbor says that these are 10 reservniks, my father heard about friendly fire that killed a whole Sayeret Matkal team.

No one knows what really happened yet, but it is clear that something really bad is going on and that a lot of funerals will be made tommorow.

What is that quote from the Vietnam war again? 'In order to save the village we had to destroy it'?

Eli, you desperately need a reality check. the Israeli offensive has no intention of saving lives - only to stalemate the peace process and perpeuate the status quo so Sharon can occupy more palestinian land.

Yes, IDF is there to stop the peace process.

It's nice to see Gnu has proportions and rightfully labels daily terracts costing 30 Israeli lives a week - a "peace process".

By your standards the Nazis were the greatest "peace makers" of all times.

It's only natural that "peace" would mean "daily terracts against Israelis".

You do know that when Cheney visited, Israel anulled it's demands and completely agreed to the cease fire, while the Palestinians were putting up more and more demands, and Israel kept agreeing?

You do know, that since Cheney visited, until Israel attacked, Israel comitted no actions of agression?

You do know, that since Cheney visited, Arafat made no effort to ask to lower the violence or begin preparing for a cease fire?

You do know, that the length of that period, more than 30 Israelis died per week?

Suicide bomber blows up Israeli bus during rush hour traffic
Wed Apr 10, 1:58 AM ET

JERUSALEM - A suicide bomber with explosives strapped to his body blew up a crowded bus during morning rush hour Wednesday, killing at least eight people and wounding 14, police and medics said.

Mideast Conflict

Israeli TV and radio stations said at least 10 people were killed in the explosion near the northern port city of Haifa. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

One witness, identified only by his first name, Motti, told Israel Radio that he was driving 20 meters (yards) behind the bus when he heard the explosion and saw the bus fly about two or three meters (yards) into the air.

"It's a catastrophe. Shrapnel and bits are everywhere," Motti said. "You have no idea what it is to see such a thing ... people are thrown in all directions."

Rescue workers arriving moments later covered several bodies lying on the asphalt with white sheets and blankets. Personal belongings were strewn on the highway, including an olive jacket normally worn by soldiers, a skullcap and identity papers. The 7:15 a.m. (0415 GMT) blast punched a large hole through the roof of the front of the bus, which was resting on the side of the highway, with its wheels blown off.

Northern Police Chief Yaakov Borovsky said the suicide bomber wore an explosives belt and detonated it shortly after boarding the bus. Borovsky said more than eight people were killed. Israeli TV and radio reports put the number of dead at 10, but it was not immediately clear if that included the assailant.

The No. 960 bus was an express traveling from Haifa to Jerusalem. The explosion went off near Kibbutz Yagur, a communal farm just east of Haifa and about 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the West Bank.

It was the second major suicide bombing since Israel launched a military offensive in the West Bank on March 29. The campaign is aimed at crushing Palestinian militias that have carried out a series of shooting and bombing attacks on Israeli civilians in the past 18 months.

Arieh Mekel, an Israeli government spokesman, said the bombing was a sign that the Palestinians were intent on disrupting a new peace mission by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites), who is to arrive in the region Thursday.

David Baker, a spokesman for the prime minister's office, said that "apparently the Palestinian terrorists' appetite for terror has yet to be quenched."

There was no immediate comment from the Palestinian Authority (news - web sites).

The last major bombing, also in Haifa, went off March 31 when a suicide bomber blew himself up in a crowded restaurant, killing 15 people.
