	Well What Should I Do With My Life? Increase the size of your Attachments

Another interview, another rejection. A job I was really after and I thought I had a good chance of getting gone. There seems to be very little around that seems suitable for my background. Those which may be appropriate seem to go to someone else who seems to be better than me.

So what should I do? I feel like my life is heading nowhere, apart from down the toilet. Any ideas?

Forgive my ignorance--what is your age, education background, etc.?

Is there anything beyond the scope of your studies you've been interested in doing?

I'm also trying to figure out what to do with my life...and I'm 25...

I am 24, degree in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry (2:2) University Of Oxford, 6 months research technician, 1 3/4 years, PhD student but didn't work out.

Yeah, I was applying for jobs in other areas so that isn't the problem; I want to get out of Hull anyway.

DD, well, things just didn't work out. The facilities were crap and I decided to leave, and the supervision wasn't much cop either, and I just felt that I was going nowhere. That is why I left. I want to move forwards, not backwards.

You've got plenty of time. Be young and enjoy yourself. Don't stress over the job thing. Ever traveled abroad?

You might want to explore opportunities in other regions/countries. The USA might be a better shot, as the economy is rebounding here strongly. Not that it would be easy to go to a whole new country.

Looks like the path i took. Decided that finishing the degree wasn't worth the hassle.

Believe me : it is worth it. Yu can take my word for it or do like i did and find out 10 years from now.

You think you know better and that it's just a waste of time.

I would tell you that finishing your degree will not only open up a lot of doors because you'll have the paper: not finishing sends a very bad signal when you're looking for a job.
Half a degree is worse than no degree at all sometimes.

A friend of mine was doing a biochem PhD and dropped out of it. He never mentioned that he was doing it when he went for interviews etc. 'cause it would look bad.

Well now that youve dropped out PH you should take a year off to go and travel. If you dont mind living on the cheap you can travel for a while on little money. Come to the US and mooch off all the american Apolytoners.

Have you asked the people who interviewed you why they didn't pick you? It might give you some pointers as to areas to work on for the next one.

Please pardon my ignorance in this field, but could it be you are asking for to much money? Quite possibly could it be that they feel you might be over qualified or underqualified?

I don't know to much about this field or the pay scale but I do have experience in trying to look for a job. Many times there will be two people vying for the same job and one will get it because they are willing to take the lower pay. Is there anything else you can do in the mean time?

To be quite honest, I found it quite premature (rash) of you to quit your PhD. Butif you think a Doctor wouldn't have gotten you anywhere, that's your decision. I'm just not convinced, somehow. The most boring thing is not always the least effective.
