I am 'exploring all options'...just firing off those applications, find something even if just temporary. I have an interview a week on wednesday and a careers fair on the thursday and the friday I intend to go to...all in Manchester (also a good excuse to get away for a few days too), and have 3 application forms to finish off at the moment (need to write the statements)...so with any luck something should work out eventually...

Yeah, I know, I have done a few interviews in my time. It is all about bullsh*tting your way through...a bit stupid really when you look at it, but this is the way the world works...but I am good at projecting an image of confidence and competence in one...christ knows how

My last one was with Aventis Pasteur. I laughed when they told me the salary (I was kind of tired). Needless to say they didnt offer it to me .

Pretty crap was it? I've seen jobs like that with appalling pay and they want high calibre graduates, even with experience. It amazes me how they find the people. Needless to say, I just move on...I need to be able to afford to exist in the modern, expensive UK...

Well it was about half of what a similar position would pay here in the US (like an american post-docs salary). They had the gall to say something like "we know the salaries are low, but thats what they are" thats when I laughed. What an understatement!

I think they deserved to be laughed at. It sounds like they are taking the piss, and it would come down to a matter of principle in the end. Even if people accept that salary, I bet they have difficulty hanging onto employees...it is their loss in the long run.

Aventis Pasteur! Grrrr.... I tried getting a highschool co-operative education placement with them. They led the teacher in charge on for weeks with "oooh, impressive marks." and "definite possibility" before saying they only wanted university co-ops or relatives of the company president!

Well, it was a decent salary for Canadian scientists, but thats why there is a severe brain drain to the US. IMO theres no way they could attract anyone beyond fresh-post-docs with that salary and it showed in the people they had working there. Still it was a nice trip, and I got to have some real croissants.

I'd guess the job situation there is tough but keep on plugin away at it. Have you re-assesed moving?

Emigrating to the US tends to be very tricky though...although I dunno, I haven't really given it a lot of thought, I'd rather sort out a job here at the moment and look into stuff like that when I have a job as an idea to move into. And Spencer, my German is crap: 'Wo ist der sauerkraut?'

Hey, it's a cool idea, but it depends on what they are looking for. Give me names, by all means, I will check them out...my concern about it is just getting all the appropriate stuff sorted for emigration and stuff like that, it sounds like hell getting into the US...
