Well the Oxford Popular English Dictionary says:

jettison v.t. 1 to throw (goods) overboard; to release or drop from an aircraft or spacecraft in flight. 2 to discard as unwanted.

Which is interestingly subtly different - no mention of distress and also a second meaning which I wouldn't have thought of...
