There are too many types of RPG's. We'll have to go with the D & D system as in Baldur's Gate.
I'll make a feeble attempt to include future type games (the only one's I know of are fallout (I have never played anarchy online)).
I actually did this as a multi-option poll. But I ran out of options. It's too difficult to cover most RPG's.

Uggghhh! I'd hate to know what you would call worse systems. I couldn't stand RM (That was the ICE one right?) and the only thing I liked about MERPS was the setting.
I think my favourite was that developed by WEG for Torg and their ill-fated Shatterzone.
Favourite characters in Fantasy-type setting were mages - simply for the flexibility offered by magic.
Ditto for Psychics and Techno-Wizard types in Modern RPGs.

I like playing characters with strong motives, whether they be self serving or altruistic. My favourites over the years have included an arrogant amoral mage who would stop at nothing to destroy his rival (Palladium), a dwarven fighter/cleric sworn to destroy all corrupting magic ( AD&D 2ed), a druid dedicated to protecting the wildlands and getting revenge on any who seek to damage it (AD&D 1+2ed) and a barbarian warrior seeking to overcome the dishonor of his tribe (custom system "Basalon")
I like seeing how referees work with these sort of characteristics. One I knew could not understand why my Druid spent five consecutive playing sessions tending trees because he ran a Greyhawk adventure and I refused to set foot inside the city until one of the few party members who respected nature was in desperate need of rescue and then left immediately afterward without helping them solve the political dispute. Others have quickly used my foibles to steer me by the nose because they are leading precisely where my character want to go even if its sometimes against my own better judgement.

Regardless of whether it is Ultima, Diablo or any other RPG, I mainly use barbarians/fighters, paladins, rangers and druids.
As for modern/post-modern RPGs, I prefer sharpshooter, or heavy weapons.
