What type of character do you usually play in RPG's? Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

There are too many types of RPG's. We'll have to go with the D & D system as in Baldur's Gate.

I'll make a feeble attempt to include future type games (the only one's I know of are fallout (I have never played anarchy online)).

I actually did this as a multi-option poll. But I ran out of options. It's too difficult to cover most RPG's.

I play exclusively fighters in table-top 3rd edition D&D, and usually some sort of mage in console games.

Thought you were going to ask about character personalities or something.

I know of no other way of meausring except the alignment system of D&D games.

I may be neutral good or lawful good. I'm not sure which.

Mage/Sorcerer/Necromancer, or Sharpshooter/Heavy Weapons. However, for game settings that are more flexible than D&D, I'll go with an Assassin/Mage hybrid--Assassin for sneaking and killing, Mage for healing, buffing, and emergency annihilation.

Personality is generally True Neutral or Chaotic Good, I suppose.

As for personality, well - it varies a great deal.

For instance the character I am currently building for NWN is (without going into depth) a Half-Orc druid, rugged and wild individualist, who despises civilisation and has a deep resentment towards humans.

Another character concept that I am currently toying with is a gnome, who's always dreamt of being a hero and acomplishing legendary feats - but, being a gnome, he always seem to fall short... so to speak.

I haven't played D&D since my high school days. Some of us do graduate to better systems such as Champions or at least Role Master.

I prefer subterfuge over brute force, so my characters are usually a sort of ranger/rogue/martial artist mixture. He can sneak around in natural and urban surroundings equally well. He strikes with great speed, then retreat into the shadows before the enemy figures out what hit them.

For superhero type campaigns my preference is mentalists. Sneaking around in yet another dimension.

Uggghhh! I'd hate to know what you would call worse systems. I couldn't stand RM (That was the ICE one right?) and the only thing I liked about MERPS was the setting.
I think my favourite was that developed by WEG for Torg and their ill-fated Shatterzone.

Favourite characters in Fantasy-type setting were mages - simply for the flexibility offered by magic.
Ditto for Psychics and Techno-Wizard types in Modern RPGs.

I tend to play rather antagonistic and irritating characters, but still with a strong loyalty to the party...I guess that would make them "chaotic neutral" if one were to go by such a primitive system.

I'm definitely all about the techno-magic in Mage: the Ascension, which is the only modern-day RPG I play.

I like playing characters with strong motives, whether they be self serving or altruistic. My favourites over the years have included an arrogant amoral mage who would stop at nothing to destroy his rival (Palladium), a dwarven fighter/cleric sworn to destroy all corrupting magic ( AD&D 2ed), a druid dedicated to protecting the wildlands and getting revenge on any who seek to damage it (AD&D 1+2ed) and a barbarian warrior seeking to overcome the dishonor of his tribe (custom system "Basalon")

I like seeing how referees work with these sort of characteristics. One I knew could not understand why my Druid spent five consecutive playing sessions tending trees because he ran a Greyhawk adventure and I refused to set foot inside the city until one of the few party members who respected nature was in desperate need of rescue and then left immediately afterward without helping them solve the political dispute. Others have quickly used my foibles to steer me by the nose because they are leading precisely where my character want to go even if its sometimes against my own better judgement.

I like monks who fight with lettle more than bare hands and their wits and clerics or paladins with a strong devotion and loyalty.

BTW, has anyone else noticed how screwed up the poll results are? Right now it says that there are 18 total votes, but I see three categories that each have 8 votes, and each of those 8 vote categories account for 44% of the total.

It's a multiple choice poll, so there have been 18 voters - and category with 8 represents 44% of the voters.

I don't play RPG's that often. But when I'm at my brother-in-laws' house and play one of his many RPG type games I usually pick the Ranger/Paladin type character. I find that this type of character has a decent balance of magic and combat skills that suit my style of play best.

The choices are too combat-oriented for the "future" RPG games. It seems to be a bad D&D influence where hack-and-slash takes most of the time. I agree with Grumbold that a player should develop a character, not a set of stats

ravagon,

There's nothing wrong with RM as I see it. At least it is one step above AD&D. I actually prefer a purely skilled based system such as Champions, but it doesn't work well for low powered campaigns.

Have you tried Ars Magica? It's a very interesting RPG.

I did play a couple of Ars Magica sessions but the ref went AWOL before any of us really got to grips with the system. It seemed very interesting and something I'd definitely play again.

The White Wolf games are good if you have a strong referee. My time as a Red Talon werewolf was brilliant and as a vampire only slightly less so. All systems can be made into the best Roleplaying experience possible by a good storyteller who is enthusiastic, talented prepared to override rules when it is right to do so. All can be ruined if turned into lacklustre a 'by the numbers' game with no inspiration. RM can suffer more then most here simply because there are so many opportunities to fall back on only playing by numbers since they have charts and modifiers for absolutely everything.

I'd consider WhiteWolf's system the best for spinning a good story because the simplicity of the stats makes it easy to go diceless if necessary. In our Mage game, the Storyteller had copies of all our character sheets, so he'd know at a glance if we could do/know something and keep the story moving.

Not that it isn't fun to go by the rules at times, but you get my drift.

Conversely WhiteWolf is probably one of the most dice heavy game systems for those that don't storytell. There may not be thousands of tables but you can find yourself rolling truly silly numbers of d10's sometimes. I also dislike the fact that gaining a skill level can actually make things worse, not better, because with 1d10 you can only get a -1 fumble but with 10d10 you can get some truly impressive disasters!

As for modern/post-modern RPGs, I prefer sharpshooter, or heavy weapons.
