Actually that's the whole world(or Midgard to any contempories out there) that will first be scorched by the Giant Surtur and his hordes and then cool to space-cold Ice as entropy and the forces of chaos defeat the old world powers of life and order.

Actually, there are a lot of Americans who would say that nuking Washington would be the best thing to happen to America in a long time. Putting aside the obvious horrors of such a thing, I really don't think that would destroy America, or even greatly diminsh it. Destroying New York would do much more harm. But anyway...

The most likely causes of decline will be economic. Put together a recession, some trade squabbles, bad fiscal management (oh, say, the last 50 years or so), the rise of other nations or groups of nations and any number of unforseen variables, and a lot can happen. Unlikely to happen soon, but history does show that the US will not remain the Superpower it is now forever.

I think America will collapse from being a world power if they go through what germany did in the 1930's, and turn fascist. Then the other countries would unite against it and take it down.

America will continue to head, as all great republics have, on a path towards dictatorship (I hate to be in agreement with George Lucas here...). Eventually, some crisis (like, hmm, terrorist attacks?) will prompt the president or a military commander to seize extraordinary powers and the despotism will begin. That will be the beginning of the end, although prosperity and supremacy may continue for sometime afterwards. Then there will be a general breakdown in morale and society, leading to evential erosion of power and disintegration. The dichotomy between the coasts and the central and southern USA is growing all the time, it seems, so the nation may split along such lines.

My prediction is that pop culture will eventually replace everything else on the face of the planet, America will eventually be filled with obese McDonald's-addicted couch potatoes unable and uninterested to keep the good ol' Stars n Strips on top, international corporations will eventually completely dominate the personal life of everyone in the world, and everybody will just screw until there's only one race and one religion and all of the world's borders will evaporate and everybody will just sit and watch television.

I doubt that the US will 'fall' like the Roman Empire did.

It will probably suffer the fate of such countries as Spain, Holland, France and Britian - i.e. it will be overtaken by others first economically and then militarily.

The first part (the overtaking economically) has already been underway for some time:

In 1950 the US was in a very dominant position economically - it's economy was 115% the size of the next 4 largest - by 2000 that had fallen to 48%.

Admittedly some of this has come about by the EU adding more countries (the current 15 member states's share of the US's output peaked in 1975 and is currently down to the level of the mid 1960's) but remember that that is how the US became such a large economy in the first place (the original '13 colonies' have a combined economy slightly smaller than Japan's - large but not globally dominant).

Both India and China are likely to end up with economies larger than the US's within 50 years (remember that they only need to have levels of income per person around a quarter of the US level to do this - equivalent to Brazilian or Mexican levels).

Military power usually follows after economic power - but with a considerable lag.
The US was a major economic power 50 years before it became a major military one, likewise the British Empire was an important military power long after it's economic dominance had ended.

People who think that US will never fall, I think are just plain wrong. I live in the US, and this country will fall, just like all other world powers that have existed before the US did. How this will happen, I dont know, and no one can say for sure. A crazy man like Hittler could be elected as president and start a anther world war which end in with down fall of the US. Fall form moral decay and corruption that takes it toll after many year and fall apart peice by peice, like rome. States decide that they want to be their own country, are upset at the actions of federal government, so like the Civil War, execpt this time rebels win. Nulcear war, a nuclear weapon is fired off by misstake, and causes a nuclear war, or the person who gets elected as president is crazy and wants to blow up the world. A group of nations that really hates the US, attacks the US and takes much of US mainland over. Many possiblities could happen.

USA exist since 226 years, and has been the first world power for just a bit more 100 years.
Rome was able to crush its opponent for SIX HUNDRED years before falling.
France has a 1300 years history and was the dominant power of Europe for 200 years in a row, and probably about 300 or 400 years cumulated.
England exist since 1000 years and was the first world power for 50-100 years.

Ancient Egypt was THE mediterranean power for three THOUSAND years before falling.
