Where are the people of my age group? Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

You know, it is a bit of an enigma to me what people of my own age do. If you go out, you never see them around, you never come across them. I mean, what do they do? It's quite weird that I still 'have a life' at 24 when most people my age just seem to have disappeared, contracted terminal boredom or got married off.

Mike perhaps might know and understand what I am on about, or is it just the thing where everyone else my age has got out of Hull while they had the chance?

Well not everyone can live in other cities, there must be people around here. As I said, people like MikeH or Big Crunch would be the most useful to answer this question, being a similar age and British. Perhaps they can give me an insight I am not aware of.

It's not just me either, I have a friend who is baffled by this little conundrum.

I'm almost certain most of them moved out of your city, although I can't tell a lot about the situation there.

Not many of that age live in this place anymore, and not many of my age either. From 1990 on, less children were born so the youth is dying out in the East.

Yeah, well I think anyone with brains got out of this place, as I am trying to do (it was a rare set of coincidences that means I am still in this city, and hopefully for not too much longer). But it just seems to be the case nowadays. Perhaps I am going to the wrong places, or the fact that they just don't go out and have fun any more. Is this the best life has in store for people? Perpetual television watchers? Bah!

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

After university leaving age most people find things called 'Jobs' these involve going out to 'work' each day and getting 'paid'. If you get a 'job' you will find that there are a lot of 'workers' who are in their mid twenties.

what I mean is this (from my point of view):

when you were in highschool you had the aim of finishing highschool

when you did you had the aim of entering university

when you did you had the aim of finishing univeristy

when you did you had the aim of going to do a Master's

you did that and had tohe aim to finish the master's

when you finished the master's you knew that the next step is to do your miltiary service

you did you military service and then, suddendly you find yourself without concrete, clear cut, pre-defined goals....

society claims the next step is to find a job

you find a job and what next..?
society claims you should marry and have children and then die.

but somehow things are not so clear cut now - you have a freedom that sometimes seems like a chore than blessing.

suddendly you find yourself with limitless possibilities going at all directions and no "responsibilities" towards anyone but yourself. (mostly).

so you can easily become a bit lost... for a while...

you find yourself without concrete clear goals...
so you have to make up your own.

also the power of adraneia(?) inactivity?? where a ball keeps rolling and it will keep rolling unless you do something to change its direction - is also strong and many times makes you delay things.... you passively sometimes "let things be as they are" because of whatever reasons, because it is easier, but in the end this is bad for you

when we were younger maybe it was easier to choose and define our goals and to follow them.
typical stuff.

I have made a jump like that in finishing my PhD paiktis, unfortunately it is a bit like a jump from the frying pan straight into the fire. I suppose I get a bit curious what people in my position are going. I have always hyped up to be so much, and when you feel that you have fallen flat on your face, you have a bit of a morbid fascination with how other people are progressing in the same situation, even meeting them and seeing what they say.

See this is the problem, I don't feel like I have anything in common with people of my own age, my experiences and my life have been different to theirs. I suppose mine has brought it's experiences and advantages, but at the end of the day, I dunno where I stand...it's quite strange when people tell you what you are capable of and what you should do, but you don't really feel like you are as capable as that. People generally seem to have more confidence in my abilities than I do.

welcome to the club

it was "easy" to be "amongst the first and the best", the joy and pride of mommy etc etc when you were younger (academically wise etc)

now with whom to compare and by what!???

I had been in a phase where i had chosen money as my way of "measuring up" how I am doing in comparison with others of my age group. But that is just stupid and immature.

sometimes maybe it is better to stop being so demanding of ourselves (not to the point of inactivety though)

I too have a small feeling of having let my life "adrift" and be a bit unsure as to where to go next - as maybe you are feeling.

maybe we are people who are not happy to take thigs for granted?
maybe we are in the phase of "finding our own way"? (corny!) who knows.

feck it!

in any case, one thing that I have learned about my little self so far is to tone down a bit that "antagonistic" spirit I maybe had and this will to measure up and compare myself with others. It is just immaturity and feeling unsure of yourself... although it sometimes serves as a kind of compass.

oh well

PH: Why not try and find a job in another country (mainland Europe perhap) ? It would be a great experience, great fun and you would get to learn a new language. Then when you came back to the UK everyone would be clamouring to employ you because you have 'international experience'.

I wouldn't know where to start. Besides, from what I have seen they are after people who have PhDs. Although I have done a considerable proportion of a PhD, I do not actually possess one. I dunno, it's a difficult one...one I wouldn't know where to start.

you can start at the Comenius program of the EU.

Just visit your european commission offices (hmm maybe they are in the capital?) and ask for the paper forms.

It is a program for yound graduates that have just finished their studies.

One of my friends used it and he is now working in Ultrecht(sp?) in the Netherlands for 3 years, earning tons of money and he is travelling a lot (with all that spare money).

Go to the EC offices ask for info and for the forms, complete them and see what can happen.

The Comenius program finances the (foreign) enterprise to employ you as a trainee. Still you can have another solution.

For example the guy I'm talking about didn't even pass through training they offered him a full working contract for 2 years (renewable).

if you want to work somewhere abraod this program is the easiest way to do it.

You could try the university (if you don't completely hate it yet), or doesn't the uni have a special employment service or something?
Or just search the web for all sorts of companies, perhaps British companies who are also abroad etc. and e-mail them.

And I agree with SD about where all the other are. After their studies everyone gets a lame office job, gets married and gets sucked into the rat race called "real life".
I hope and intend to do this a little different.
