Slovenia played well, maybe some luck. China had an easier road to the World Cup than any European country.
A question, the stadiums available to the MLS teams are big if I am right. I can imagine advertising is also not that bad in the US, couldn't the MLS attract some more Europeans to America. For as far as I know they are pretty few there, although the money, which those players seem to like, is there.

Joe Max-Moore couldn’t get in the Everton first team when they were playing their right back up front.

Well no... the US is trying to entice them into staying at home and playing in the MLS, so they can build up the league. Most of the US players come from the MLS. Some, like the goalies (Brad Friedal and Kasey Keller) play in England. Cladio Reyna (the most important player on the team) plays in Germany, IIRC, and used to play for Rangers in Scotland. And of course, O'Brian and Stewart play in the Netherlands. I believe everyone else plays in the US... though DeMarcus Beasley and Landon Donovan might make the jump to Europe in a few years. |
Ummm, not quite. Earnie Stewart is a guaranteed starter for the US, in fact he is the Captain when Reyna isn't available. As for European based starters.
Your right about Keller (Tottenham Hotspur) and Friedal (Blackburn). Reyna (Sunderland) plays in England along with Greg Berhalter (Crystal Palace), Eddie Lewis (Fulham), and Joe-Max Moore (Everton).
Other European based players are Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96, Germany), Franke Hejduk (Bayer Leverkusen, Germany), Tony Sennah (FC Nurnberg, Germany), John O'Brien (Ajax, Holland), Earnie Stewart (NAC Breda, Holland), and David Regis (FC Metz, France).
Of the original 23 named to the team, 11 were European based. When Chris Armas was injured a 12th Euro. player was named, Steve Cherundolo.
Your also right that Beasley and Donovan will be next. In fact, Donovan played for Bayer Leverkusen but was not getting much playing time and was placed on loan to MLS. Leverkusen still holds his rights I believe.

I think that argument is pure BS. Going back to Slovenia or Ireland, each of which only have one star (Zahovic and Keane respectively) managed to eliminate the Netherlands, Romania, and Yugoslavia. Ecuador are going ahead of Colombia. It’s not just about how many superstars you have.

I always think that quality counts, why Van Gaal couldn't make it work, I don't know, but in theory, looking at the street value of those players on the pitch, the Netherlands should easily beat Ireland. So indeed, I am very eager to know how Van Gaal made this all possible, because I thought this to be almost impossible.

Have you watched no football over the past few years? How did Valencia and Deportivo finish above Real Madrid and Barcelona? How did Chievo do so well in Serie A? Lille in France? Leverkusen in Europe? Were those all unfair results, or was it that the teams refused to give in?

Leverkusen ruined it in the end. Part of their success might have been in the fact they played un-German. The Italian competition is so hard that I would say that every club there has chances to win or end high. The team Barcelona has isn't quite what it has been, I regard the team of Real Madrid far better, probably also in value. And didn't those guys win some European price...

Only because, by your own admission, Levekusen ruined it in the end. If Real Madrid are so great (they have the best players) how come they finished third in the league?

Because they had a very busy schedule? Maybe??? Winning some European Cup.

That makes no sense whatsoever. Several reasons:
1) Man United have won a treble before; the fixture 'congestion' can actually be beneficial to players, if they can handle the pressure.
2) A league is fought over a whole season. Valencia wrapped it up with a couple of weeks left.
3) If you have the best players, you should be able to overcome the loss of one or two of them due to injury/suspension/rotation. That is the whole point of having a strong squad.

Ok, who has the best squad in Europe than?

Oh, so that's why we aren't at the WorldCup, because we have the best club of Europe.

Deportivo, probably.

Because they have two good players in every position.
