It's fun sometimes to have a serious discussion. With Sten about bond trading or with KittyHorse about physics or with MTG about infantry tactics.

I didn't have the patience to read it all, I just want to say that Pope visit Romania too and everything was OK. The visit was at our patriarch invitation.

I can see why most of the Orthodox want nothing to do with the Pope. The simply do not agree that the See of Rome is superior to all others.

But with Greece, it also concerns the fall of Constantinople. Paiktiss, you may want to jump in here. But most Greeks I have met speak of Constantinople in loving terms. They look on Constantinople as the capitol of their nation. It fell in 1453 to the Turks because Rome and the Catholic west did not send (enough)aid when it was most needed. Emperor John has requested Rome's assistence in the last visit of a Roman emperor to Rome. The request was granted, but on condition that the Orthodox church once again recognize Roman See as the first among the Patriarchs. The Emperor agreed. But the Patriarch of Constinople did not agree.

As a result, Constantinople fell. Resentment against the Pope for this "betrayal" or "power grab" obviously remains strong.

They should just resent their own pathetic lack of martial expertise. If they want to be independent, fine. But don't come crawling back to Rome for protection like little babies, every time the Turks kick their asses...

And then you want to engage in "serious" talk GP...

See there is a fundamental problem with a lot of people. They deem "wise" and "intelligent" what comforms with their own system of beliefs or simply with their ideas. They discard as worthless whatever does not comform.

Great for an ego boost but not exactly the ideal platform for seriousness especially in an internet forum

are you just telling me this or do you think it is reasonable justification to dislike the pope?

lets take the Turkis example. find an atlas and look at borders of my country (croatia). they are not very natural are they? because of the turks too. so should we hate the turks because of it still? ofcourse not. (although there are many proverbs and jokes in the people about turks, and there are still celebrations of liberation from them in some areas)

but not even kids think that nowadays turkey is to blame.

that is just one example, I mean with europe's history of wars everyonef/i] should be pissed of at [i]everyone else.

lots of things are used to gain "leverage" of all sorts
religion is one of those I guess. also the Pope never really hid his inspirations for a unity of the churches under him and that does not help either I think.

BTW it was really funny to see the "exchange" betwen state and church about the pope.

state: come on... let him come... pretty please?
church: we'll see

it does not have an impact no.

but the new patriarch is starting to mess around with political issues, something that is frowned upon

(something that in the catholic/protestant world is very widespread practice :see christian democrats for example)

the church had to give permission for the pope to come though because he would not have come other way...
in free non - religious terms he can come whenever he wants though (as all citizens with clear records )

edit: about the skirt the sma eexact thought came to my mind

the state and the church "at knives" as we say now

they conflict for some matters as I.D.s (the inscription or not of religion - church lost)

the church's ideas about the euroarmy, the state says mind your own business etc.

BTW the socialists (=the government) were stupid, you don;t shun the church, you try to have good relations with it.
but OTOH the left wing is very powerful too so it evens out somewhat
